Toluene diisocyanate (TDI) is a preliminary product in the manufacture of polyurethane, a versatile plastic with a growing number of applications, e.g. in the automotive and furniture industries. A total of ten H51q HS controllers are used in the entire plant as emergency shut-down systems (ESD) and also as burner management systems (BMS) in the TAREX (thermal air purification for potentially explosive substances) plant area. Besides positive experience with HIMA safety technology from previous projects, the “Maintenance Override” feature was a crucial factor for the customer to decide in favour of the H51q HS systems.

The eight systems for the TDI plant and the two systems for the connected thermal air purification process approx. 6,500 or 300 safety inputs and outputs, respectively. The entire plant uses an Emerson DeltaV control system for process control. H51q HS system is a modular and extendable safety system with TÜV-approved, maxi-mum available CPUs for applications up to SIL 3. HIMA supplied the entire hardware and was also responsible for cabinet installation and for system programming and commissioning.

“Maintenance Override” is a bridging system which allows the plant operator to bridge a sensor or an actuator while the plant performs maintenance work or function tests. By means of a special enable switch in the measuring station, the system is bridged for a pre-defined time period. Maintenance override significantly reduces work and expenses caused by process interruptions.
