Executive Summary: -

Today’s business environment is becoming more and more

complex day by day. In this highly competitive environment

every organization has to rely on the data related to overall

market size as well as market demand for specific product which

is also known as market potential. Marketer’s first step in

evaluating marketing opportunities is to estimate total market

demand. Market demand for specific product is the total volume

that would be bought by a defined customer group in a defined

geographical area in a defined time period in a defined

marketing environment under the defined marketing program.

During the year of growing complexities, the management

along with the 7 M’s of management needs more and more

rigorous marketing information to reduce the risks involved in

the introducing new products and penetrating a new market.

Market potential has today become an important component of

the market forecasting and estimation to manage all areas of

management in general.

The present concept of marketing is thus oriented towards

the market rather that the products. It is a customer orientations

backed by integrated marketing aimed at generating customer’s

satisfaction and long run consumer welfare as the key to

satisfying organizational goals.

4 Market potential for ERP system

Page 5: 0601050 market potential for erp system

The market potential or demand analysis is a study to

measure evaluates and interprets the size of various target

markets. The market forecast shows expected market demand,

not maximum market demand. For the latter, we have to

visualize the level of market demand resulting from a “very

high” level of industry marketing expenditure, where further

increase in marketing effort would have little effect in

stimulating further demand. Market potential is the limit

approached by market demand as industry marketing

expenditures approach infinity for a given marketing

environment. The customers then use the information collected

through the market potential on the different machines to bring

out the products, which are the need by the customers.

Research Methodology:-

Research methodology is a way to systematically solve the

research problems. It may understand as a science of studying how

research is done scientifically. In it we study the various steps that are

generally adopted by researcher in studying his research problem

along with logic behind him.

TYPE OF RESEARCH: -

Descriptive Research: - This is descriptive type of research.

This type of research includes surveys and fact finding enquiries of

different kinds. The major purpose of descriptive research is

description of the state of affairs as it exists as present. The main

characteristic of this method is that the researcher has no control over

the variables; he can only report what has happened or what is

happening. The methods of research utilised in descriptive research

are survey methods of all kinds, including comparative or co

relational methods.

RESEARCH DESIGN: -

Descriptive research studies are those studies which are

concerned with describing the characteristics of a particular

individual, or group. The studies concerned with specific predictions,

with narration of facts and characteristics concerning individual,

22 Market potential for ERP system

Page 23: 0601050 market potential for erp system

group or situation are all examples of descriptive research studies.

The design in such studies is rigid and not flexible and focuses

attention on the following:

1) Formulating the objectives of the study (what the study is

about and why it is being made?

2) Designing the methods of data collection (what techniques

of gathering data will be adopted?)

3) Selecting the sample (how much material will be needed?)

4) Collecting the data (where can the required data be found

with what time period should data be related?)

5) Processing and analysing the data.

6) Reporting the findings.

DATA SOURCES: -

There are several ways of collecting the data, which differ

considerably in context of money, time and other resources at the

disposal of researcher.

There are mainly two types of data: -

a) Primary Data.

b) Secondary Data.

23 Market potential for ERP system

Page 24: 0601050 market potential for erp system

Primary Data: -

The primary data is that data that is collected as fresh and for

the first time and thus happens to be original in nature. In order to

achieve the above set of objectives the researcher for collecting the

data uses “Survey Method”.

A market survey was conducted in the PUNE Industrial Estate

(Bhosari, Nagar road and Warje industrial estates) for collecting the

data by administrating a structured questionnaire, personal interviews

and in some cases telephonic interviews were also conducted.

For the purpose of conducting interviews an interview Guide

was prepared, which made it quite easier for the interviewer to collect

all relevant information needed for the researcher.

The structure and the contents of this interview Guide are as follows:

Interview Guide: -

The first four fields in the SIF viz.

Name of the company

Address

Tel. No. And

Email and website are imperative and should be enquired about,

preferably, at the Reception/ Security and not from the

concerned person.

24 Market potential for ERP system

Page 25: 0601050 market potential for erp system

The field Name of the contact person and his designation are

leads that convert our cold call to warm one. It should be emphasized

here, that availability of the Name of the concerned person, saves lot

of time and effort while perusing the cold call, in the sense that we get

a clear picture of the status of organization as regards to ERP in one

shot.

Building Company profile: -

Is there EDP department in the firm?

Who is the person responsible for software/ computer related

issues?

Who looks after the Accounts or Purchase department?

To get to the concerned person

What is the end product?

What are the operations involved?

The business segment can be decided based on the end product and operations involved.

What is the type of manufacturing?

Work center based, processes, assembly, job work etc. will help

gauging the requirements of the firm for manufacturing and its

sub modules.

25 Market potential for ERP system

Page 26: 0601050 market potential for erp system

What are the other departments in the firm?

Which software are used in Purchase/ Inventory/ Manufacturing

etc. departments?

How invoicing is carried out?

What are the other operations, which are still carried manually?

To identify the decision taker, if the firm holds the need and

capacity to buy an ERP:

What is the overall attitude of the company towards automation/

IT/ computers?

Will explain the present level of automation, and help in tracing

the attitude of the organization towards automation and IT

related requirements in future

How the performance of the software is used?

Do the existing systems satisfy your needs?

Will it make a change if systems are integrated?

If you are to make an IT related investment, who is the decision

maker?

Who needs to be contacted to know whether you would go for

an ERP system or not?

Will help in estimating the magnitude of the organization.

Whom do you supply to?

What is the mode of distribution of product?

26 Market potential for ERP system

Page 27: 0601050 market potential for erp system

Through distribution network, suppliers to a single firm etc.

What is the number of employees?

Parameters that will partly decide their capacity to buy/ invest in

IT related products/ services:-

What are the locations of other units, if any?

Use of Net sync.

Who is in charge of other units? What is the group turn over?

What is the annual turn over/ range of turnover of the firm?

Competitor’s information:-

What is the profile of the vendor who supplies the present

software?

What are the software/ automation requirements of the firm in

future?

Secondary Data: -

The secondary data is that which already exists and has been

collected and analyzed by someone else for some other purpose but it

is also useful for our present study.

Here the secondary data is collected through the literature available

from the company records, websites ands by referring magazines,

reference books, journals etc

27 Market potential for ERP system

Page 28: 0601050 market potential for erp system

SAMPLE SIZE: -

The sample size of user research is 166. The samples are taken

from industrial areas around Pune like nagar road, bhosari and warje

industrial estate.

.

SCOPE OF THE STUDY: -

The scope of the study focuses on the “Market Research

conducted in some parts of Pune industrial estates”, for identifying

the business opportunities for the iota technologies ltd, Pune.

In this study in depth analysis of the business segment, annual

turnover, employee strength and the probability to adapt the ERP

package in future is made.

The study also includes identification of probable customers

in this area for the ERP package on the basis of standard criteria laid

down by the company.

28 Market potential for ERP system

Page 29: 0601050 market potential for erp system

LIMITATIONS: -

The inadequate knowledge regarding the technical details of ERP

to few of the respondents was one main limitation in the research.

The busy schedule of the company people who were to be

contacted for detail discussion was another major limitation of the

research work.

The main constraint in the project work was the limited time

period specified for this research that would permit to cover the

entire area allotted.

29 Market potential for ERP system

Page 30: 0601050 market potential for erp system

Data analysis and interpretation: -

Market Segmentation: -

Market segmentation is the process by which the total

heterogeneous market for a product is divided into several sub-

markets or segments. Each segment is homogeneous in all major

aspects and is different from other.

Here Market segmentation was done on the basis of following

factors.

1) Geographic factor – Industrial area surrounding Pune city

area.

2) Demographic factor – Turnover of businesses (economic

status). That is From Rs. 2 crores to Rs. 200 crores

3) Product oriented segmentation – According to the nature of

product of a customer the segmentation is done. It is as

follows.

A – Auto components

B – Electrical and electronics.

C – Equipment and Projects.

D – Process industries.

E – Others.

Out of these 155 companies mentioned above 18 companies

are within turnover range of Rs. 0-2 crores and ‘IOTA’ does not

provide ERP to the businesses below Rs. 2 crores rather these

businesses not in a position to incur cost of ERP package so those

companies can’t be prospects. But in future these companies can

become prospects, for this purpose their data is considered.

In case of ‘B’ segment out of 8 companies 1 company is

In ‘C’ category 52 companies are not having ERP system

while 3 companies are with ERP system.

In ‘D’ segment out of 21 only 1 company is having ERP

In case of ‘E’ category only 1 company is having ERP system

while 13 companies are without it.

34 Market potential for ERP system

Page 35: 0601050 market potential for erp system

Demand analysis / Market Potential: -

Data shows that out of 157 companies only 14 companies are

having integrated ERP systems.

No. of companies which

implemented ERP

% of ERP implementation = _______________________________* 100

Total no. of companies

14

= _____*100

157

% of ERP implementation = 8.91 ~ 9 %

Above calculation shows that up till now 9 % companies

implemented ERP systems and 91 % companies are without

integrated ERP systems ( companies are having customized products

are not included ). That means there is still 91 % market potential in

those mentioned areas.

Again out of these 157 companies 18 companies are below

range i.e. below 2 crores of turnover so these companies should

excluded in order to obtain existing or current market potential. The

market potential which is obtained above is considering future

market. So we have to obtain current marketing potential excluding

those 18 companies.

35 Market potential for ERP system

Page 36: 0601050 market potential for erp system

Total no. of companies = 157 – 18

= 139

14

% of ERP implementation = ______* 100

139

= 10.07 ~ 10 %

Existing / current market potential = (100 % - 10 %)

(Including process industries) = 90 %

Out of these 139 companies 21 companies are process

industries and currently ‘IOTA’ doesn’t have ERP system for those

industries so in present situation there are only 139 – 21 = 118

companies ‘IOTA’ can focus on and out of these 21 companies only 1

company is having ERP system. We have to exclude that company

from total no. of companies having ERP system i.e. 14 -1 =13

So we can calculate the market potential without taking in to

consideration process industries in following way.

13

% of ERP implementation = _____* 100 = 11 %

118

Market potential = (100 % - 11 %)

(Excluding process industries) = 89 %

36 Market potential for ERP system

Page 37: 0601050 market potential for erp system

Findings: -

Majority of the companies under survey belong to the

Manufacturing units followed by the other category and the

foundries. This clearly gives an indication that there are good

business opportunities in this area for the ERP packages.

Out of 157 companies 18 are below range i.e. 2 crores and none

is above range i.e. 200 crores. So 139 companies are available

to sell the ERP product. Out of which 14 companies already

have integrated ERP system. That means still there are 125

companies which can be prospects for ‘IOTA’.

97 companies are using ‘TALLY’ as the software package for

administrating their business.

‘IOTA’ does not provide ERP for process industries and there

are 21 process industries whose data is considered. This data

will be helpful if in future for ‘IOTA’ if it will come up with

ERP system for process industries.

‘IOTA’ doesn’t have any customized and low cost product for

small scale industries having turnover less than Rs. 2 crores and

also many companies feel that cost of ERP package of ‘IOTA’

is high.

37 Market potential for ERP system

Page 38: 0601050 market potential for erp system

Recommendations: -

As there is tremendous market potential in Pune industrial area

(90 % as shown above), company has to do aggressive

marketing in those areas. For this purpose company should

negotiate up to certain extent in order to fulfill the orders, so

that penetration of ‘Sixth Sense’ in those areas will increase and

companies in those areas can come to know about the product

and about the company.

Company should do marketing through public relations as

company has limited financial resources. Also ‘IOTA’ has

implemented ‘Sixth Sense’ in many companies, by taking

references from those companies public relations can be

developed and use to capture the untapped potential.

There are 21 process industries out of which 1 company has

implemented ERP system. Currently ‘IOTA’ has no product for

process industries so company should provide proper attention

in order to develop ERP product for that industry.

As 18 companies are below range of turnover ‘IOTA’ should

provide them and to such other small units customized ERP of

lesser cost.

Company should create the awareness between the industrialist

and the entrepreneurs about the implementation benefits and

cost of their ERP package.

‘IOTA’ should tap other geographical areas where industrial

belts are present e. g. Nashik, Nagpur, Raigad, Mumbai, Gujrat

etc. ‘IOTA’ has to sell at least one ERP system in those areas so

that ‘IOTA’ can give reference of our product and company to

other prospects in that area.

‘IOTA’ can do brand promotions by giving advertisements in

different industrial journals as well as in different industrial

exhibitions so that companies can came to know about product

and ‘IOTA’ company.
