"To im- prove is to change; to be perfect is to change often." In this ever growing world of technologies, inventions, discoveries and a fast paced life, we often hear the term 'intelligence'. This word has become so common that it has ended up losing its true meaning. In all honesty, how many of us have actually taken the time to ponder upon what the term re- ally means? We often refer it as a person's intellect. But I can assure you that there's a lot more to the term than just that. Scientists that attempt- ed to define the term have emphasised on the aspect of adaptability. Stephen Hawk- ing once said, "Intelligence is ability to adapt to change." Robert Sternberg had similar thoughts while defin- ing intelligence, "The abili- ty to adapt to the new envi- ronment; or modify the en- vironment or seek out and create new environ- ment." One saying goes, "The only thing constant in life is change." Changes are an inte- gral and in- evitable part of life because a life without changes is a life not lived. Changes are im- portant because it prevents us from get- ting into a vicious cycle of leading a monotonous life. An 'intelligent' individ- ual would know how best to adapt to such a change. To adapt to change would be to take whatever situation you are in and turn it around to your advantage. Our ability to be able to adapt is what make us hu- mans the most intelligent. But defining intelligence is hard. Though it seems to be one single thing, it has many aspects to it. From verbal ability, pattern recognition, logic, memory to social judgement, intuition and musical ability, the list is endless. If we intend to have an umbrella that covers all of intelligence, then it's our ability to adapt to change. Assessing the situation and making it favourable for us is the only way we can quan- tify 'intelligence' . And thus," The measure of intelligence is the ability to change."
