>HALCON: Halo

HALO is a collection of tables, benches and storage components for formal meeting spaces. At the heart of the collection is the Halo table with the “Halo edge.”

“Tables are encircled by the Halo edge, providing vital connectivity and protection with impact-resistance; any chair striking the table edge is defended from damage by HALO’s perimeter profile, and table surfaces are equally protected, remaining pure in material and form with power and data cleanly integrated into the HALO edge.”

Modern sideboard storage and bench seating options complement the HALO tables and can be configured to meet any need.

In the storage components, thoughtful modules accom-modate everything from refrigeration and waste bins to cutlery, glassware and dishware, including magnetized pieces to accommodate different sized dishes, and even a record player with speaker system (during our visit to the showroom, HALCON was spinning Kind of Blue by Miles Davis – swoon).

-SILVER: Lake by Andreu World: Lake’s apparent sim-plicity is the result of an exhaustive work on the value and timelessness of wood. It is a contemporary reinterpretation of the classic chairs developed from the work of cabinet-making; a piece that combines lightness, constructive quality and durability. Its backrest is specially designed to provide ergonomics from a minimal gesture: with only three bands of wood offering comfortable support. >Healthcare Fabrics & Textiles-GOLD: Biophilia Collection by Designtex: The Biophilia

Collection features nine coated and woven upholstery textile designs that employ colors, shapes, patterns, textures and algorithms that utilize biophilic principles and engage the user though connections to nature. Specific biophilic prin-ciples utilized include biomorphic forms and patterns, visual connection to nature, and complexity and order. -SILVER: Renewal Collection by Mayer Fabrics: Designed by Kimberle Frost, the Renewal Collection features a new twist on recycled solution-dyed nylon performance fabrics. All woven with 100% recycled solution-dyed nylon and milled in America, its six patterns reflect Ms. Frost’s talent for creating textural effects through the use of color and weave: Lotus, an organic pattern layered with subtle weave effects; Rejuvenate, a modern leaf-and-vine embedded ottoman; Suna, referencing ornamental exploration with its vector like illustration; Sutra, a geometric grid of classic weaves that emerge as elements of faille, twill and crepe in a large-scale check; Vipassana, featuring a grand ornamen-tal floral design with an ombre effect; and Zazen, an ex-quisite interpretation of a double ikat in a large yet useable scale. www.mayerfabrics.com

-SILVER: Snowsound Diesis by Snowsound USA: Diesis is a free-standing or hanging drape structure that acoustically corrects the nearby environment. Snowsound-Fiber acoustic structures derive their name and patented technology from the sound absorbing properties of freshly fallen snow. The fabric is designed to primarily absorb mid-range and low-range frequencies while reflecting some high-range waves for proper acoustic balance. www.snowsoundusa.com

>Architectural & Decorative Glass-GOLD: Transcend™ by Suzanne Tick by Skyline Design:

Transcend responds to changes in how we use and experi-ence space today, as we seamlessly transition from one spatial function to the next – between interior and exterior, from public to private, from open to quiet areas. Transcend allows six etched and printed patterns on glass to intersect, overlap or fade using different techniques, thus facilitating a fluid experience of interior environments. It consists of three fading geometrics and three technical textures that relate the collection to the materiality and construction of build-ings, evoking the subtle fading and textural variations found in brick, stone and metal. Transcend also won the Gold and Editors’ Choice awards in the Wall Treatments category. www.skydesign.com

>Architectural Products-GOLD: Altos Landscape by Teknion: Altos Landscape is

-EDITORS’ CHOICE: Night Vision by Bentley Mills: Night Vision brings to light an innovation in yarn technology, illuminating the floor in soft striations of monochromatic color. Variegated yarns alternate between low and high luster, mixing color within the angled design in unexpected ways. Bold patterning and subtle ombré effect – available in a range of gradient color combinations – combine to give the broadloom a dimension that morphs the design as you move across it. www.bentleymills.com

>Carpet: Modular-GOLD: Lichen by Mohawk Group: The Lichen Collection,

inspired by natural assemblages of multi-hued, multi-textured lichens, is the first floorcovering to achieve Living Product status. It was designed in collaboration with the founder of the Living Product Challenge, Jason McLennan. www.mohawkgroup.com

-SILVER: Emergence by Shaw Contract: Mood-setting or playful, Emergence aims to surprise as color and pattern appear from an elusive background. It is a rich, botanical design that takes its abstract direction from the art world to subvert realism in an aesthetically engaging form that con-trasts tranquility with buoyancy – a lush landscape of tonality and pattern, light and shadows. www.shawcontract.com

-INNOVATION: Collaborative Collection by Bolyu: TREE-BARK and BARKLEY are the first members of the Collab-orative Collection, which combines images from nature and imagination to create complex designs. It features Thrive™ yarn which has 75% recycled content and a product to CO2 ratio of 1:4, said to be the lowest in the industry. TREE-BARK is inspired by trees that convert CO2 into building

blocks; its pattern, color and texture are intertwined to evoke the image of a dense, thick forest with rays of light from the sun creating shadowing on foliage and tree bark. BARKLEY mimics Treebark as a far-reaching view of what is real and what may be imagined, a random pairing of color and texture creating overall yet smaller organic elongated elements. www.bolyu.com

>Carpet Fiber-GOLD: ECONYL® Pure by Aquafil USA: ECONYL® Pure

fiber is the world’s only fiber available for piece dye that is made of 100% regenerated nylon. Discarded fishing nets and other ghost gear rescued from the ocean floor along with carpet fluff from spent carpets and other nylon waste is transformed into nylon 6 bulk continuous filament yarn that is so pure that it is white and ready to be piece dyed into any color. While traditional industry recycling processes can result in material degradation, Aquafil’s process is said to return the nylon waste back to its virgin state without any degradation or loss of quality, and it can be regenerated an infinite number of times. www.aquafil.com

Color™ is a pioneering accomplishment in patented fiber cabling and heat-set process that allows products to achieve a space-dyed appearance with 100% solution dyed fibers. It entangles two or more strands of solution-dyed nylon fiber in varying color combinations together in accordance with a pre-selected and changeable pattern. Cabling the strands in a tight or loose entanglement achieves a short or long space-dye effect. Designers can have pin-dot placement of color or large pools of color specifically or randomly placed in a 100% solution-dyed textile floor with both sustainable benefits and cost savings. www.bolyu.com

>Flooring: Hard-Surface-GOLD: Lineate by Mohawk Group: Lineate enhanced

resilient tile collection combines ombré gradations of color with textile-like striations for a richly dimensional visual. Cool and warm neutrals are combined with on-trend color pops and a linear texture. The color ebbs and flows across the plank to give the illusion of depth on a flat surface. www.mohawkgroup.com

-SILVER: Subtractive Layers by Patcraft: Subtractive Lay-ers uses foundational methods of art to explore new ground. Inspired by a subtractive process that adds dimension by removing material, the collection includes two 12x24’’ tiles, Remove and Withdraw, available in 20 colors between the two patterns. With every subtraction, texture is multiplied, color magnified and composition unified. www.patcraft.com

r-d connectionRESEARCH-DESIGN CONNECTIONActivity-based Work Environments: An Assessmentby Sally Augustin, Ph.D.

Hoendervanger and his colleagues studied activity-based work (ABW) environments because “Despite their growing popularity among organisa-tions, satisfaction with activity-based work (ABW) environments is found to be below expectations. Research also suggests that workers typically do not switch frequently, or not at all, be-tween different activity settings.”

Via questionnaires filled out by thousands of people working in ABW environments the team learned that

“Satisfaction ratings of the 4 percent of the respondents who switched several times a day appeared to be significantly above average. Switching frequency was found to be positively related to heterogeneity of the activity profile [diversity of activities], share of communication work and external mobility [so, for example, more diver-sity of activities was linked to more switching]…Our findings suggest that satisfaction with ABW environments might be enhanced by stimulating workers to switch more frequently. However, as strong objections against switching were observed and switch-ing frequently does not seem to be compatible with all work patterns, this will presumably not work for everyone. Many workers are likely to be more satisfied if provided with an assigned (multifunctional) workstation.” n

officenewswireENVIRONMENT>ASID’s Washington, DC headquarters is the first space in the world to achieve both Platinum Level Certification for the WELL Building Standard™ under WELL v1 and LEED Certified Platinum under the LEED ID+C rating system. These are the highest recognitions awarded by the International WELL Building Institute™ and the U.S. Green Build-ing Council. The 8,500 sq.ft. office space, designed by Perkins+Will, incorporates the most innovative health and wellness design features, and has sustainability as a central philosophy. It features human-centric design elements including biophilic design strategies, which introduce natural ele-ments into a space to help reduce stress and increase

air quality; sound masking systems; rigorous water qual-ity standards; and a circadian lighting system developed to expand efficiency by help-ing to regulate the body’s physiological processes. These design foundations are coupled with policies and procedures that empha-size employee health and productivity. Fresh fruit and vegetables are provided, sit/stand desks are present at workstations, and a wellness room is available to provide mental breaks, among count-less other features. Through funding by the ASID Foundation, the office is serv-ing as a living laboratory for the design community. The positive impact of the office is demonstrated through some of the pre-/post-occupancy research conducted to-date. The indoor environmental

attributes (i.e., lighting, acoustics, and CO2 levels) show that the ASID office is a healthier environment. An as-sessment of key performance indicators of an innovative workplace, using the CAP-TIW© worksheet, also shows an increase in all parameters, placing the ASID HQ office above the benchmark data. Additionally, research by Cornell University found that employee satisfaction on the environmental quality of the office increased significantly, as did overall job satisfaction, perceived support by the organization, and perceived organizational productivity. PROJECTS>IIDA on Jun. 12 unveiled its new international head-quarters. Sited in an iconic Mies van der Rohe tower at 111 E. Wacker Dr. in the heart of downtown Chicago, the 17,000sf space offers sweeping views of the city and the Chicago River and puts human potential at the forefront. It was designed by Contract magazine’s 2016 Designer of the Year, Todd Heiser, IIDA, Design Principal and Studio Design Leader in Gensler’s D.C. office. The project’s essential design intent is that place, people,

culture, and brand matter in the workplace. Herman Miller’s innovative Living Office concept serves as the backbone of the project. Other manufactur-ers contributing product to the landmark space include Adotta, Agati, Daltile, Delta Lighting, Formica Corporation, IdeaPaint, Johnsonite a Tarkett Company, Knoll Textiles, Lind-sey Adelman, Maya Romanoff, Maharam, McGrory Glass, MechoShade, Mohawk In-dustries, MOSS, OFS Brands, Shaw Contract Group, Sherwin Williams, Sicis, Tandus Cen-tiva a Tarkett Company, 3M, Thomas Interiors, Tuohy, and USG. The space is a next-generation model of living design, serving as a home base for the asso-ciation’s 25 employees and for design industry professionals at large. It features light-filled offices and conference rooms and an array of inviting public areas for people to meet and collaborate. An elegant mosaic-tiled entryway opens to a clean white canvas that allows the office’s expansive city views to captivate and motivate. Pops of color come

Re-porting slower than anticipated sales in its supplies-driven office furniture business, HNI now expects second quarter non-GAAP earnings per diluted share to be in the range of $0.41 to $0.46 compared to its prior guidance of $0.65 to $0.72. Second quarter consolidated organic sales growth is expected to be in the range of 0-1% compared to the previous guidance of 4-7%.

“We are navigating an increasingly dynamic environment in our supplies-driven business,” said HNI Chairman, President, and CEO Stan Askren. “In the short term, our results are being negatively impacted by accelerating channel shifts and timing of orders. We continue to respond to the changing environment by investing in new products and selling capabilities and accelerat-ing our initiatives around quick ship, direct fulfillment.

“Many of our large dealer-distributors are transitioning to more direct fulfillment from us. We’re seeing destocking of wholesalers’ inventory, which is contributing to a faster than expected sales decline in the wholesale channel. In addition to this channel disruption, we’re also experiencing unfavorable order timing.

Orders in the supplies-driven business started the quarter slowly. Although they are recovering, more of our second quarter orders will ship in the third quarter than previously expected. Despite this volatility, we remain optimistic about our market momentum. Our backlog in the supplies-driven business is up substantially compared to the beginning of the quarter. In addition, our con-tract office furniture businesses have strong momentum, and our hearth business is performing well.

“We are in a unique position to take advantage of these channel shifts. We had previously started several initiatives to reposition our supplies-driven model and are now accelerating our moves, which will be implemented over the next year. We remain confi-dent our supplies-driven business will continue to excel and drive long-term value. We are the best total cost producer with the strongest brands and broadest product offering in this segment.”

HNI now estimates full year non-GAAP earnings per diluted share to be in the range of $2.40 to $2.70 and consolidated organic sales to grow 2-5% versus the prior year. This compares to prior guidance of non-GAAP earnings per diluted share of $2.80 to $3.10 on organic sales growth of 3-6%. Slower demand in the supplies-driven office furniture business, and to a lesser extent, greater investment in direct fulfillment capability, higher inflation, and competitive pricing pressure are driving the reduced outlook. http://investors.hnicorp.com

>USG Corp. and the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, in their inaugural ‘Commercial Construction Index’ released on Jun. 15, reported high revenue and employment expectations for 2017. Developed with Dodge Data & Analytics, this index is a new quarterly economic indicator designed to gauge what drives the commercial construction industry and its leaders, including specific issues such as backlog of work, new business pipeline, revenue projections, workforce issues, and access to financing. In the current report, Q2 2017, nearly all contractors surveyed – 96% – expect revenues to grow or remain stable this year compared to 2016, with 40% expecting an increase and only 3% expecting a decrease in revenue. Two-thirds (66%) of contractors said they expect to employ more workers in the next six months, indicating growth in a sector that employs approximately 3 million Americans. But 61% of respondents reported difficultly finding skilled workers. The contractors reported the biggest shortages in the concrete, interior finishes/millwork, masonry, electrical, and plumbing trades.

The Index findings are compiled using survey results from contractors within a DD&A panel of more than 2,700 decision makers from across key facets of the commercial construction in-dustry. This first public report was developed using research from previous quarters, which puts into context the state of contractor sentiment in the U.S. building industry. The report looks at the results of three leading indicators – backlog levels, new business opportunities and revenue forecasts – to generate a composite index on a scale of 0-100 that serves as an indicator of health for the contractor segment on a quarterly basis. The Q2 2017 composite index score was 76, representing continued health in the sector. This composite score is up two points from a 74 in the Q1 survey, driven primarily by a bump in the ratio between actual and ideal backlog. New business and revenue results also saw slight increases quarter-over-quarter.

The composite scores from the three drivers of confidence were:

-Backlog: 81, up four points in Q2 over Q1. Contractors’ current average backlog levels represent 81% of their ideal backlog lev-els, up from 77% in Q1. On average, contractors currently hold 9.9 months of backlog, while the ideal amount is 12 months.

-New Business: 77, up two points in Q2. Nearly all contractors continue to report high or moderate confidence in the market. Well over half of contractors (59%) reported high confidence in new business over the next 12 months (up from 51% in Q1), indicating a shift to higher levels of confidence among some respondents.

-Revenues: 71, up two points in Q2. An overwhelming 96% of contractors expect revenues to grow or remain stable in 2017 over 2016. Of those expecting revenue increases, the actual per-centage of expected increases varies widely. Forty percent expect revenue increases of 7% or more in the next 12 months.

“This first-of-its-kind Index was born out of a need to understand the issues that affect commercial construction,” said Jennifer Scanlon, President and CEO of USG. “The Index will deliver criti-cal insights into the future health of the industry. USG is commit-ted to providing solutions for our customers in order to help the entire industry make strong contributions to the U.S. economy. Through the Index we are able to identify areas of strength and pinpoint areas of improvement where industry leaders must focus.”

“The commercial construction industry is a vital engine for the American economy,” said Tom Donohue, President and CEO of the U.S. Chamber. “The projected growth uncovered in this research is good news for employers and workers, but there is reason for concern in the lack of qualified talent available in vital specialties. To get our economy growing to its full potential, we must ensure that we have a workforce that is ready to fill the available jobs. Each quarter, this first-of-its-kind research will make us smarter about future challenges and inform solutions for our country’s leaders.”

The report looks at the results of three leading indicators – back-log levels, new business opportunities and revenue forecasts – to generate a composite index on a scale of 0-100 that serves as an indicator of health for the contractor segment on a quarterly basis. The Q2 2017 composite index score was 76, representing continued health in the sector. This composite score is up two points from a 74 in the Q1 survey, driven primarily by a bump in the ratio between actual and ideal backlog. New business and revenue results also saw slight increases quarter-over-quarter.

The inaugural Index is, and each quarterly Index published going forward will be, available on the USG website at www.usg.com/news as well as on the website www.CommercialConstructionIn-dex.com.
