Officer of the month: Lucinda LaPierre Lucinda is always looking for ways to get the Jaycees name in the community, she chaired the homeless shelter drive and she does a great job in making sure deadlines are met and important correspondence gets turned into the state on time. Thanks so much for all of your hard work Lucinda, keep making an impact! Jaycee of the month: Christina Norvell Christina has been helping out on the by-laws committee and she came up with a great idea to run the Kankakee Area Jaycees blog to keep everyone updated on what's going on! Good job Christina thanks for all of your hard work, keep it up and keep making an impact!

Thank you to all of the Kankakee Area Jaycees and friends of the Jaycees who

donated to the Homeless Shelter Drive! The drive was incredibly successful. So far

we were able to bring over a truckload of personal care items, kitchen supplies,

clothing and paper products. Thank you to Jackie Teske and my boyfriend Jason

Hurt for helping me make the first delivery. The supplies were more than they

expected. Pastor Ed and his guys greeted us with open arms and great humor. We

were able to take a tour of the shelter and meet the new resident dog. We still have

some items to be donated and at least one more load to bring over there. Great job

Kankakee! Pastor Ed and some of the guys will be at the next meeting, Sunday May

20th at Beef O'Brady’s to tell us their story and a little bit about the shelter. If you

have any more items please feel free to bring them to the meeting. Keep up the great

work! I look forward to you all meeting Pastor Ed and hearing about his passion and

how he makes an impact every day.

KEYS TO FUNDRAISING SUCCESS …

This past weekend at the Illinois Jaycees General Assembly an award was given to a Jaycee chapter for a Bachelor

Auction fundraiser that raised $13,000! This is the type of fun event that inspires you to want to conduct your own

fundraiser for your chapter. Every non-profit organization has expenses, and in order to run our projects we also

need starter funds. Our haunted event for this year does have a starting fund, but we will definitely need more. We

need to be creative and think outside the box to design fundraisers for the Kankakee Area Jaycees.

There are a couple of key ingredients to help with a successful fundraiser. First, implement an idea that is creative,

unique, and fun! In this tight economy, people are less willing to give money unless it is an event that appeals to

them personally. Branching off this idea, understand your community and the target audience you wish to reach.

Third, while a general fundraiser for the Jaycees may work, it is more likely to attract donors if the purpose of the

fundraiser is clear. People want to know what their money is going towards. Fourth, if possible link your fundraiser

to the end goal project by creating a theme.

When creating a fundraising event, keep in mind that you will want a low start-up cost, so as not to defeat the

purpose of the fundraiser. You will also need to attract a large number of people to your event, so use of social

media, radio, and newspaper is essential. To help with cost effectiveness, try to find a venue that is suitable to your

event in which the owners are willing to participate in the event or sponsor it. Think of incentives the business can

offer to those attending the event and which the Jaycees can offer the business for its services.

In an effort to raise funds to support our haunted event this fall, let’s think of ideas for fundraisers. Since it is a

community event, specifically geared toward children and teens, a fundraiser that also involves the youth would be

fitting. Here are some samples of activities or events that could be used for a fundraiser:

Have an Art sale

Eating contest

Costume themed Mini-golf tournament

Scavenger Hunt

Obstacle course competition

24 Hour Dance-a-thon

If you have a fundraising idea or would like to participate in the planning of one, contact Lucinda, our Business VP

@ [email protected]. I would also love to participate in the planning, so please contact me as well @

Name: Ann Procopio

Occupation/affiliations:

Secretary at Riverside Medical

Center/ X-Ray Technologist at

Iroquois Memorial Hospital

Hobbies: Taking pictures,

going to movies, being

outdoors.

What would be (or is) your dream project?

Raising money for the Kankakee County Humane

Society

What is something you gained from joining the

Jaycees?

The Jaycees has helped me get much more involved in

my community, something I’ve wanted to do for a long

time. I’ve also met an amazing group of people.

What do you consider to be your best accomplishment

(within or outside the Jaycees)?

Within the Jaycees it was chairing my first project,

which was raising money for Nothing But Nets. It was

the first time I had ever done anything like that, and it

ended up being a success. Outside of the Jaycees it

would be graduating from the X-Ray program at KCC

which helped me find my career path.

What does being a Jaycee mean to you?

Being a Jaycee means being a part of an inspiring group

of people. It’s helped me learn a lot about myself. It’s

also helped me build new friendships that I know will

last a lifetime.

DID YOU KNOW? Ann has stepped up to fill the position as Membership Vice President!

WAY TO MAKE AN IMPACT!!

Nothing But Nets

Congrats to Ann Procopio and her committee on a successful Nothing But Nets fundraiser! Ann did an excellent job

on her very first project as a Jaycee. Not only did the chapter raise enough money to send 53 nets, but we also raised

the most money in the state for this wonderful organization! It’s amazing what we can do for others when you put

your minds together! Congrats again to everyone who helped out with this project!

We Believe:

That faith in God gives meaning and purpose to human life;

That the brotherhood of man transcends the sovereignty of nations;

That economic justice can best be won by free men through free enterprise;

That government should be of laws rather than of men;

That earth’s great treasure lies in human personality;

And that service to humanity is the best work of life.
