MARVINAfter playing two straight games de-

cided by one goal, Marvin Ridge didn’t want to play a third close one if at all possible.

The Mavericks got their wish, pound-ing Hickory High 5-1 in the 3A state semifinals on Wednesday.

For the first time in their three-year history, the Mavs are playing for the state title in girls soccer.

Marvin Ridge got on the board in the 11th minute. Toni Lashley made a long throw that found the head of Ashley Hartert, and the flick was driven into the back of the net by Ashley Aragona.

Helen Butler sent in a free kick in the 28th minute that Kaitlyn Sulser was able to pop in to put the Mavs up 2-0. Consid-ering MR hasn’t allowed more than one goal in a game all year, the contest was essentially over at that point.

The Mavericks, 23-0 and ranked No. 1 in the 3A state poll, have outscored their op-ponents 102-4 on the year.

“I’ve been extremely hap-py with the way we have played as a team,” said senior defender Chelsey Horan. “We definitely click, and we always sup-port each other when bad things happen. We don’t let anything come by.”

Senior Alyssa Clark, a defensive midfielder, agrees that chem-istry has contributed to their run to the state championship game — which will be played Saturday in Raleigh.

“We work really well together on and off the field,” said Clark. “We make sure we keep our marks and are talking.”

The Red Tornadoes (19-2-1) could only muster one shot on frame in the first 20 minutes. They came into the game ranked No. 2 in the state in 3A behind Marvin Ridge.

The Mavericks’ defense took a blow in the 46th minute as Butler — a Virginia Tech commitment — went down with an apparent head injury; her status for Sat-urday is unknown.

INDIAN TRAILJust a sophomore, Sun Valley High’s Jody

Fuller is quickly becoming one of the most highly-recruited wide receivers in the state.

Fuller, a 6-foot, 194-pounder, recently picked up three more major college offers in addition to the one he already had from the University of South Carolina.

According to Sun Valley coach Scott Stein, Fuller now has offers from East Carolina, Maryland and Duke.

“Jody’s going to have his share of offers before it’s all said and done,” said Stein. “He’s been blessed with size and speed, so now he has to put it together and figure out where he wants to go and what he wants to do. A lot of schools want to bring him in for visits this fall.”

Fuller caught six touchdown passes during 11 regular games in 2009, helping the Spartans to an 8-3 record and a share of the conference championship for the first time in school his-tory. Sun Valley also won a 4A playoff game.

With the graduation of two seniors who made second-team all-county — Andre Mc-Manus and Dustin Cook — Fuller’s role will certainly expand in 2010.

It’s not over just yet, but this has already been one of the best years for high school sports Union County has ever seen.

The county is finally catch-ing up with the scattering effect suffered by the six existing schools that have endured five state-sanctioned schools opening up within the UC borders in the last five years.

Rivalries have been born, and opportunity is more abundant.

Already this school year, Mar-vin Ridge High has produced a state champion in boys soccer, followed by Monroe’s state title in boys basketball. The Mar-vin Ridge girls will play for a potential third state crown this weekend after winning their

3A semifinal match against Hickory, 5-1, on Wednesday.

Piedmont was state runner-up in wrestling, and Wedding-ton finished second among

3A schools at the girls track and field championships.

Union County has produced seven individual state champi-ons in track this spring, while Central Academy won two titles in wrestling and Weddington had a girls swimmer win it all. And don’t forget Marvin Ridge’s doubles team in boys tennis.

More than 40 seniors have signed athletic scholar-ships from Union County, which is unprecedented.

The junior class is also packed with talent, with roughly a dozen already con-sidering or accepting major college offers in their sports.

Marvin Ridge has proven to be a hotbed for athletic tal-

ent since opening its doors for the first time in 2007.

The newest high school in town, Cuthbertson, had a shockingly successful first year. Early indications suggest the Cavaliers will be a powerhouse on the county, conference and even state level in numerous sports — much like Marvin Ridge, the school from which Cuthbertson drew a good portion of its student body.

Long-time coaches will tell you talent comes through in cycles.

Often times, a class loaded with talented athletes will be followed by a less-than group the following year.

WHO’S NEWS

Celtics’ Davissuffers concussion

ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) — Boston center Glen Davis was diagnosed with a concussion after being

shaken up late in the third quarter of Game 5 of the Eastern Conference finals, need-ing to be held up by referee Joey Crawford to keep from falling.

Davis was struck in face by Orlando center Dwight Howard’s elbow, tumbling to the court as play went the other way. Davis tried to get up, only to fall again, and then was clearly dazed when he got to his feet.

He took a few more steps, then staggered toward Crawford, who wrapped his arms around Davis to keep him upright as play stopped with 9.7 seconds left in the period.

Davis was tended to on the court for a few minutes, then walked to the Celtics’ bench and eventually toward the locker room for evalu-ation.

The Celtics said he would not return. There was no immediate word on his availability if the series extends to Game 6 on Friday.

Sosa off the hook with Congress

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Justice Department will not be asked to pursue a case against

former slugger Sammy Sosa for possibly lying to Congress.

A spokes-woman for the House Commit-tee on Oversight and Government Reform said Wednesday the panel has de-

cided not to have Sosa investigated for his remarks at a March 2005 hearing, when he denied using performance-enhancing drugs.

Sosa is reported to be on a list of baseball players who allegedly failed drug tests in 2003.

The committee asked for a simi-lar investigation of Roger Clemens after he denied using steroids or human growth hormone at a 2008 hearing. A grand jury is hearing evidence in that case.

The committee’s decision on Sosa could have been influenced by a five-year statue of limitations.

Mickelson glad to be back at Colonial

FORT WORTH, Texas (AP) — Phil Mickelson is back at the Colonial to defend his 2008 title,

and express appreciation to the community that embraced his family during his absence last year.

The Colonial last year was soon after Mick-elson found out his wife, Amy,

had breast cancer.During the third round last year,

Colonial staged a “Pink Out” to honor Amy Mickelson and raise awareness of the disease.

Mickelson says the gesture gave he and his wife a “huge emotional boost at a very difficult time.”

Another “Pink Out” is planned for Saturday, when most players, including Mickelson, and tourna-ment staffers are expected to wear pink.

A win at Hogan’s Alley this week would elevate the Masters champion to No. 1 in the world ranking for the first time in his storied career.

EAST BENDCuthbertson High’s bid

to shock the world in girls soccer this season fell just short.

A first-year school with-out a senior class, the Cav-aliers led at halftime but couldn’t hold off unbeat-en Forbush in the 2A state semifinals on Wednesday.

The defending 2A state champions, Forbush scored twice after intermission to claim a 2-1 home win and reach the state title game for the third straight year.

The Falcons, now 26-0, have 11 seniors. The Cavs have four juniors, and the rest freshmen and sopho-mores. Freshman Megan Feranda’s goal put Cuthb-ertson ahead 1-0 on an assist by Leah Drawdy, and the lead stuck until halftime.

State titlesContinued from Page 1B

As a county, it appears the 2011 class won’t drop off much, if at all, compared to the 2010 graduates.

So all this could mean Union County is trending upward in terms of its general athletic prowess.

Chances are, middle-school athletes on down will draw inspiration from the success they are seeing in the county right now. It’s also possible that the younger generation will take

on a sense of entitlement and under-estimate the work required to be a state champion and a college athlete.

Maybe Union County high school sports are at a peak right now, and we should appreciate it accordingly.

Or maybe this is just the tip of a the iceberg.

ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) — Not ready to go home just yet, the only place the Orlan-do Magic are headed is back to Boston.

Halfway to history.Taking another step to-

ward overcoming an improb-able 3-0 series deficit, Dwight Howard had 21 points and 10 rebounds to lead the Magic to a 113-92 victory over the Celtics on Wednesday night in Game 5 of the Eastern Conference finals.

A series that looked like a sweep a few days ago now has the Celtics taking a slim 3-2 lead into a pressure-packed Game 6 in Boston on Friday night. The Celtics are facing the possibility of playing it without Kendrick Perkins after their starting center picked up his seventh tech-nical foul of the playoffs, a mandatory suspension un-less it is overturned.

A potential Game 7 would be in Orlando.

No NBA team has won a series after losing the first three games.

The Magic, seemingly life-less after a blowout defeat in Game 3, suddenly have hope to be the first. They broke out of their series-long

shooting slump, making 13-of-25 3-pointers.

“We just all believe,” guard Jameer Nelson said. “We all believe. We know we can do it, one game at a time.”

Nelson scored 24 points, and J.J. Redick had 14 to help the Magic to a frenetic pace that the Celtics couldn’t sustain. Howard added five blocks as Orlando built an early 14-point lead that was nev-er seriously chal-lenged.

Rasheed Wal-lace had 21 points, and Ray Allen scored 19 for a Boston team that once seemed on its way to another NBA fi-nals.

Now? The Celtics are stunned and dazed.

Howard’s elbow inadver-tently came down on Glen Davis’ face near the basket in the third quarter, giving the Celtics forward a con-cussion. Davis tried to get up as play continued on the other end, wobbling his way to midcourt, almost falling flat as referee Joey Crawford kept him from tumbling to the hardwood.

Davis did not return, and his status for Game 6 was not immediately announced. The rest of the Celtics con-tinued to crumble, again un-able to deliver the knockout blow.

Give the Magic a punch-er’s chance.

Redick provided a big boost off the bench, making a pair of 3-pointers to high-

light a 20-8 run that put Orlando ahead 51-37 in the second quar-ter. His swishes and crisp passing kept the Celtics scrambling, and it filled a major hole with starter

Vince Carter continuing to struggle.

Amid an amped-up Amway Arena, Wallace picked up his third foul during the spurt and taunted Orlando fans all the way to bench. Wallace shouted and screamed to the stands, pointing at his ring finger for the championship he already won with Detroit — a title that has long eluded Orlando.

Things got even worse for the Celtics when Perkins was ejected after he picked

up his second technical of the game and seventh of the postseason for arguing with officials. Perkins and Mar-cin Gortat were whistled for double technicals a few minutes prior after they got tangled up.

That means Perkins, one of the best defenders in the league on Howard, will be suspended for Game 6 unless the NBA rescinds the techni-cal. The league reviews ev-ery technical.

The Celtics are two games from infamy, and the pres-sure is mounting, too.

Only four times in the his-tory of North American ma-jor pro sports leagues has a team won a playoff series after losing the first three games. Such comebacks are something Boston fans know all too well.

It has happened three times in the NHL — most recently by the Philadelphia Flyers over the Boston Bru-ins earlier this month — and once in baseball, when the Boston Red Sox came back to beat the New York Yan-kees in the 2004 AL champi-onship series.

In 93 tries, it has just never been done in the NBA.

MavsContinued from Page 1B

The Mavs piled on in the second half, going up 4-0 be-fore allowing a score.

Amanda Clark, Alyssa’s twin sister, found Ashley Hartert for a 3-0 lead in the 51st minute.

Around the 60-minute mark, Marvin Ridge started rotating in backups. The drop off wasn’t significant, though.

In the 62nd minute, sopho-more Marissa Hartert found Amanda Clark for MR’s fourth goal, and the celebra-tion was on in the home

stands.The Red

T o r n a d o e s finally got on the board in the 63rd minute, with Jackie Lom-boy getting an easy one, taking advan-

tage of a lapse by the Mavs’ second-unit defense.

In the 70th minute, the Mavs were able to get that goal back as Taylor Dove lobbed a ball toward the Tor-nadoes’ goal, and her sister, Ali, touched it to Marissa Hartert, who pounded it past the diving keeper.

“From the beginning of the season we worked to be at this point,” said Mavs coach Ray Fumo. “We wanted to get back to this point, and we wanted to win.”

The Mavericks lost one year ago in the state semifi-nals by a single goal.

“We felt, last year, a little disappointed that we were

not able to play our best game in that state semifinal match.

This year our goal was to get here, win, and move on to that final game.

“We won at every level of

the field.”The Mavericks will now

play Cardinal Gibbons Sat-urday for the state champi-onship.

Cardin Gibbons, 16-4-3 and the No. 2 seed out of the Car-

olina Conference, won the 3A East Region against Jackson-ville 1-0.

The 3A state championship game is scheduled for 4 p.m. at Dail Soccer Stadium on the campus of N.C. State.

PARIS (AP) — Roger Federer sat under a courtside umbrella and looked up at the gray sky as rain fell.

Tennis, anyone? With drizzle continuing after a one-hour de-lay, Federer rose from his chair, removed his warmup jacket and went back to work.

A change in the weather Wednesday at the French Open barely slowed Federer, who eliminated Alejandro Falla 7-6 (4), 6-2, 6-4. The No. 1-ranked Federer calmly endured two weather delays to reach the third round.

“This is how this game has been played for decades,” he said. “We’re used to walking on and off the court and being flex-ible about these kind of things.”

After three days of warm sun-shine, conditions were damp and cool for the start of round two. There was a third delay of 90 minutes after Federer finished.

Before the rain, No. 2-seeded Venus Williams used her big

serve to beat Arantxa Parra San-tonja 6-2, 6-4. Williams whiffed on a forehand and was often bested in long rallies, but serves at up to 128 mph kept her in control, and she was never broken.

“On the bigger points, espe-cially on my serve, I thought I played those really well,” Williams said. “I think that was key.”

Williams improved to 14-2 on clay in 2010. She’s seeded second behind her younger sister Ser-ena, who scouted while sitting next to their fa-ther. The sisters could meet in the final.

Federer lost serve just once against Falla, at 5-all in the open-ing set, then broke back and hit four winners in the tiebreaker.

“I thought the first set was good, actually, from both sides,” Federer said. “He really pushed me to come up with something special, which I couldn’t do in

the first set, really. I definitely got a little bit lucky to get out of that one.”

From there only rain could slow Federer. The match was stopped for 15 minutes in the sec-ond set, and again for an hour in

the third before play re-sumed in a drizzle.

He tweaked his game as an adjustment to the weather.

“The texture of the clay changes drastically when there’s no sun,” he said. “Conditions slow down a lot. ... There are advantages and disad-vantages, and you’ve got

to use them if you can.”Federer, who completed a ca-

reer Grand Slam when he won at Roland Garros last year, is seek-ing his 17th major title.

No. 5-seeded Robin Soderling won 20 of the first 22 points and went on to beat unseeded American Taylor Dent 6-0, 6-1, 6-1. Soderling, who upset Rafael

Nadal last year and then lost to Federer in the final, has dropped only seven games through two matches.

Other men’s winners included No. 8 Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, No. 10 Marin Cilic and No. 11 Mikhail Youzhny.

In other women’s play, No. 26 Dominika Cibulkova rallied past American Varvara Lepchenko 4-6, 6-2, 6-0. Cibulkova, a semifi-nalist last year, faces Williams next.

“I’ll continue to try to execute my game and not worry really a ton about what my opponent is doing,” Williams said.

Two-time semifinalist Nadia Petrova, seeded 19th, beat Ag-nes Szavay 6-1, 6-2. No. 14 Fla-via Pennetta defeated Roberta Vinci 6-1, 6-1.

For the day’s opening match on center court, Williams again wore her lacy corset despite the change in the weather, with temperatures in the 60s. At her postmatch news conference,

there were seven questions about her outfit.

“Lace has never been done before in tennis, and I’ve been wanting to do it for a long time,” she said. “The illusion of just having bare skin is definitely for me a lot more beautiful.”

Williams sent her flounce fly-ing when she served. She went to deuce six times in her first ser-vice game before holding, then pulled away to take the set.

In the second set, both players held until the seventh game. Wil-liams drew Parra Santonja into a moonball rally, then sprinted forward to slam a winner. That gave Williams a 4-3 lead, and she served out the victory, her 28th in 32 matches this year.

In 13 previous French Open appearances, Williams reached the semifinals only once — in 2002, when she lost to Serena in the final. But at 29 she’s en-joying a career resurgence, and her record this year is the best on the women’s tour.

CLEVELAND (AP) — Mark Buehrle’s ejection in the third inning for arguing a balk didn’t rattle the Chicago White Sox, who regrouped after losing their starting pitcher and survived a scary ninth to beat the Cleveland Indians 5-4 on Wednesday.

Buehrle and manager Ozzie Guillen were both tossed by first-base umpire Joe West, who called two balks on the left-hander in the first three innings.

Mark Kotsay hit a two-run homer off Jake Westbrook (2-3) and Mark Teahen drove in two runs as Chicago won two of three over Cleveland to capture their first road series this season.

Bobby Jenks nearly blew a 5-1 lead in

the ninth, allowing the Indians to score three runs before striking out Austin Kearns with the bases loaded and get-ting Russell Branyan to fly out.

White Sox reliever Tony Pena (1-1), summoned in the fourth after Randy Williams left with an apparent foot in-jury, worked four scoreless innings and was credited with the win.

Yankees 3, Twins 2MINNEAPOLIS — Nick Swisher hom-

ered in the top of the ninth inning, al-lowing Mariano Rivera to record his second save in less than four hours for New York.

Swisher hit his solo shot off Twins closer Jon Rauch (1-1), the third two-out run scored by the Yankees in the second game.

Derek Jeter homered and made a highlight-reel play at shortstop in the sixth inning of the first game, which was completed after being halted by rain the night before.

Rivera pitched the ninth inning for the save in the first game, making up for his only blown chance of the season 10 days ago at Yankee Stadium against the Twins.

Andy Pettitte (6-1) went eight innings in the second game.

Red Sox 11, Rays 3ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — Adrian Bel-

tre homered twice and matched a career high with six RBIs, leading Boston to its eighth win in nine games and a three-game sweep

Beltre had four hits, finishing a double shy of the cycle after his ninth-inning triple helped put the game out of reach. David Ortiz homered for the sixth time in 11 games.

John Lackey (5-3) allowed two runs over 6 1-3 innings, pitching his best with runners in scoring position.

Matt Garza (5-3) allowed a season-high six runs and five hits in five innings.

“Jody fits every profile you want in a perimeter player,” said Stein. “He’s a thick kid, he benches 300 pounds, he’s got close to a 40-inch verti-cal and he runs right in the 4.6 40 range. He fits the bill of what college coaches are looking for.”

Fuller is one of four receiv-ers in Union County with at least one Division I offer.

Marvin Ridge junior KJ Brent, who has committed to South Carolina, has 10 offers on the table. Park-wood junior Marcus Leak has committed to Maryland, while Monroe junior Jami-son Crowder has offers from North Carolina, Duke, Wake Forest, East Carolina and Il-linois, according to rivals.com.

Crowder, who had seven returns to touchdowns last season, ran the 40-yard dash in 4.40 seconds at the Shrine Bowl combine earlier this month, according to rivals.com.

Braves use six-run seventh inning to top Marlins, 7-3

MIAMI, Fla. (AP) — Troy Glaus drove in two of Atlanta’s six runs in the seventh inning to lift the Braves past the Florida Marlins 7-3 on Wednesday night.

Yunel Escobar had two hits in the seventh as the Braves sent 11 men to the plate, recorded five hits — all singles — and drew three walks.

With the Marlins leading 2-1 heading into the pivotal inning, Burke Badenhop (0-5) relieved starter Nate Robertson, who struck out five in six innings, and gave up singles to the first two batters be-fore Nate McLouth sacrificed.

Dan Meyer relieved and walked Eric Hinske to load the bases. Bri-an Sanches came on and gave up a sacrifice fly to Martin Prado that tied the game. Sanches walked the next two batters and allowed three straight run-scoring singles, in-cluding a two-run hit by Glaus. Es-cobar’s second single of the inning gave the Braves a 7-2 lead.

Tommy Hanson (4-3) picked up the win, allowing two runs over six innings. He struck out four and

walked five. The Marlins pulled within 7-3

on an RBI single by Ronny Pau-lino, but left two runners on in the eighth and Billy Wagner pitched a perfect ninth.

Hanley Ramirez lined a fastball over the right-field fence for his eighth home run to give the Mar-lins a 1-0 lead in the first. Hanson walked the next three batters be-fore striking out Paulino to end the inning.

Hanson settled down after the first and helped his own cause by delivering a sacrifice fly in the fifth that scored Melky Cabrera, who singled, advanced on a passed ball, then moved to third on a deep fly ball.

The Marlins made it 2-1 on a hit by Jorge Cantu after Hanson inten-tionally walked Ramirez to load the bases. Cantu’s single to left scored Robertson, but Cabrera threw out Gaby Sanchez at the plate to limit the damage. Ramirez homered, singled, walked and stole a base for the Marlins.

ForbushContinued from Page 1B

“We were thrilled to be up, absolutely,” said Cavs coach Nelson Garner about halftime. “We limited their chances in the first half and we didn’t get a lot of chances, but we stuck one.

“But we were under no illu-sions that the game was over. We knew they would come out firing and they did.”

Leticia Patino tied it up for the Falcons early in the second half, and with 20 minutes to play, N.C. State signee Jessica Bailey scored the game-win-ning goal.

“It was a heartbreaker,” Gar-ner said. “When you look at their roster compared to ours, it was amazing the age differ-ence.”

Garner’s team finished 19-5-1, and has to be considered among the early favorites to win the 2011 state championship since everybody is eligible to return.

“It’s hard not to think that, and hard not to be excited about next year, but nothing is going to be handed to us because we have everybody back,” Garner said. “There’s always good com-petition every year. Hopefully this experience makes them more hungry to work in the off-season. Now we know what it takes to get here. We’d be crazy not to set our goals higher for next year, but we’re not going to sneak up on anybody.”

Garner never anticipated such an impressive year out of his young team.

“They completely exceeded my expectations,” Garner said. “I’m extremely proud of them. It was a tremendous experience for all of us.”

E-J staff photo by Ed Cottingham

Senior Ashley Aragona, right, scored her 13th goal of the season to help Marvin Ridge improve to 23-0 and reach Saturday’s 3A state championship game, which will be played Saturday at 4 p.m.
