The Tooele County Chamber of Commerce and the Deseret Peak Complex is proud to present the

third annual Tooele County Corporate Games. This olympic-style experience en-compasses 19 different events and sports, with overall winners taking home the Corporate Games Cup. Individual event winners receive medals for 1st, 2nd, & 3rd place. This year’s presenting sponsors include Mountain West Medical Center, Cargill Salt and Clean Harbors Grassy Mountain Facility.

The games are designed to encourage employees from all areas of your company to get to know each other better by par-ticipating side-by-side in events for both the athletic and not-so-athletic, promote wellness and recreational activities, boost morale, teamwork and company pride among employees. Participating com-panies report increases in: Teamwork, Camaraderie, Company Pride and Mo-rale! Most importantly, we do it because it’s fun.

It’s no secret that workplaces that en-courage regular physical activity report:

Joining the Corporate Games is easy! First, determine how many events your company will compete in. Each event is $50 or fourteen for $500. There are nineteen events to choose from. Second, circulate the events list within your company and get your employees signed up. Based on interest of your em-ployees, select which events your company will participate in. Indicate which bonus events you would like to participate in.

ing preparations for their largest fundraising event of the year…..the 2012 Chamber “Quality Cup” Golf Tournament. The first class event will be held on Friday, June 15th at Tooele’s premier 18 hole golf course, Oquirrh Hills. Quality Automo-tive Group is the Platinum Sponsor for this years exciting event. For several years now the Tooele County government has actively pursued increasing safety and de-

creasing accidents in the workplace and thereby reducing injury claims. Those efforts have paid off in multiple ways.

Tooele County Commissioners re-cently learned the County is a recipient of the 2012 Charles A. Cain Award for Workplace Safety. The prestigious award comes from the Workers Compensation Fund.

WCF President and CEO Ray Pickup wrote in a letter to the county, “Your

company was nominated because of its outstanding safety practices and is one of only 14 companies to receive an award this year.”

The County identified the Risk Assess-ment Program and the Accident Review Board as two of its many “outstanding safety practices.”

The County Clerk, Marilyn Gillette, manages the County’s participation in the Utah Counties Indemnity Pool (UCIP), in other words the insurance program. In September 2010, UCIP asked Tooele County to be the first in the state to utilize its pilot safety program: the Risk Assessment Program (RAP).

RAP encourages each department in the County to hold weekly safety training meetings on various subjects with train-ing materials being provided by UCIP. The topics range from fire safety and toxic materials to all types of harassment and substance abuse prevention. It also incorporates a hazard reporting program for employees.

The RAP assists with disciplinary ac-tions for unsafe employees. The County can see that the offenders are complet-ing the required safety trainings. But the program also rewards good behavior up front. There are incentives such as pizza lunches and gift cards to local retailers for departments that have at least 70% attendance at 70% of the trainings.

Gillette said, “The training has often resulted in identification and reporting of things needing to be fixed. Employees are beginning to ask ‘Are we in compliance?’ Through RAP we are trying to impress on employees that we want them safe. They are our most important asset.”

The Accident Review Board consists of the Commissioners, County Clerk, Hu-man Resources Director, Attorney, Parks & Recreation Director, Roads Director, Solid Waste Director, and the Sheriff.

At each quarterly meeting, the Board reviews past liability claims and workers compensation claims. Each supervisor must explain what happened, any correc-tive actions involving the employee, and preventative actions taken. The Board also looks for trends in accidents or claims that can be remedied.

Human Resource Director Pam Ayala says, “The Board demonstrates to em-ployees the County is taking a top-down approach to safety. We’re taking it very seriously. Having supervisors explain the situations creates ownership. The result is we’re seeing a reduction in the severity of the claims.”

Commissioner Colleen Johnson explained some of the benefits of the County’s safety programs. “By making safety a priority and having trainings and reporting even the smallest accidents it is making people more aware. It’s saving the county a lot of money by reduc-ing lost work time and personal injury claims. Those really add up after a while. The biggest thing it has done is made people more aware of the potential of an accident and as a result they’re more careful. With the Accident Review Board,

What are some of the exciting

plans that you have for 2012....are you going on a cruise, planning an exciting vacation, get-ting married, having a baby...how about voting for the President of the United States, vot-ing for the Governor of the greatest state in the county? In fact, this year you will be able to vote for the people who repre-sent you from the President of the United States, to representation on the local school board. What power you have!

In preparation for this big decision, please make sure that you are registered to vote in Tooele County. Have you moved into Tooele County or moved to a new home in Tooele County? Did you register to vote where you went to college and have not re-registered in Tooele County? If any of these scenario’s pertain to you, please register to vote with your updated information.

There are a number of ways you can reg-ister: 1) Go to the Clerk’s website at www.co.tooele.ut.us/clerk.htm , click on the big red VOTE. This will take you to the state’s website where you may register. This link ties into the Utah State Drivers License Division. If the information on your driv-ers license matches the information you put in for voter registration, you will be able to register on line. The signature from your drivers license will be sent to the clerks office on your voter registration. If your information is different, it will allow you to print off the registration form, sign

it and mail it to the clerks office. 2) There are voter registration forms all around the county, i.e., Tooele City library, Grantsville City library, Stansbury Park library, book mobile, etc.; 3) Call the clerks office and we will be happy to mail one to you - 435-843-3140.

Easiest way to vote... Would you like to have your ballot sent right to you? This is one of the best services we have in the Tooele County Clerks Office. If you have someone who is elderly, disabled, busy, or just has a hard time making it to the polls......By-Mail voting may be for you/them. About two weeks before the election a ballot will be sent to you. Vote at your convenience, sign the affidavit on the back, put a stamp on it and mail it to the Clerks Office by the day before the election. You’re done!!! No worry about weather, polls opening and closing time, long lines, etc.

So how do you apply for a By-Mail ballot? Go to the website listed above and after clicking on the big red VOTE, rather than clicking on the link to register to vote, click on the “Request an Absentee Ballot”. If your information is the same as on your drivers license, again, you may submit your application on line. If not, you may print off the filled out form and mail it to the Clerk’s Office.

The Primary Election this year will be on Tuesday, June 26th and the General Election will be on Tuesday, November 6th.

The Chamber of Commerce invites service minded groups and individuals to

participate in a Chamber Clean-up Day. The event will be held on Saturday, May 26, 2012 beginning at 8 am at the Chamber Building located at 154 S Main, Tooele.

The members of Modern Wood-men of America in Tooele will put their hands where their hearts are and join community members to beautify the grounds of the newly remodeled Chamber of Com-merce building. Modern Wood-men will also sponsor a lunch for volunteers that day which will be prepared by the staff at Denny’s in Tooele.

This project is part of Modern Woodmen’s Good Neighbors Program a nationwide program that gives their chapters across the county money for hands-on repair and community beautifi-cation projects. Nearly 550 such projects benefit communities in the United States annually.

As a tax-exempt fraternal benefit society, Modern Woodmen sells life insurance, annuity, investment and banking products not to ben-efit stockholders but to improve the quality of life of its members, their families and their communi-ties. This is accomplished through social, charitable and volunteer activities. Annually, Modern Woodmen and its members pro-vide more than $23 million and nearly 1 million volunteer hours for community projects nation-wide.

The staff and members of the Chamber as well as Modern Woodmen invite everyone to be “Good Neighbors” and help beautify the community. Please bring gloves, shovels, rakes, hoes, wheelbarrows, trimmers and any other items used for clean-up.

Saturday June 2nd Maceys will once again host its annual Kids Safety Fair.

Many community safety of-ficials will be there including Tooele City Police, Tooele Fire Department, Tooele County Search and Rescue, Tooele County Sheriff, Utah Highway Patrol, Poison Control, U of U Teddy Bear Clinic, Bike Safety, County Health Department

and the Life Flight helicopter, just to name a few! Meeting all these groups up close can help a child feel more confident in calling for help and can also aid in relieving some anxiety in a crisis. Each group has great and simple safety tips that could make a big difference in your family’s safety. Don’t miss this annual event! Mark your calen-dars for June 2nd.

Commissioner Jerry Hurst said, “They’re both good programs. As I go around and visit my departments they’re all implementing them. We even partici-pate in the Commission office. It stimu-lates the thought process that we take things for granted and it brings things to our attention. We can be better in safety in the workplace. It’s a good reminder. On the accident review board we look at where we’ve been and where we’re going with the accident rates and what we can do to reduce accidents. We go through the list of claims and results and com-pare them to previous years to look for ups and downs to see where we need to concentrate.”

Tooele County also has a Safety Com-mittee, chaired by the Human Resources Director, Pam Ayala. The committee consists of one member from each department. At regular meetings, the Committee discusses any safety concerns that anyone might have.

The County also maintains and issues to each employee a Safety Guidebook and an Emergency Handbook. Tooele County Emergency Management recently updated the Emergency Handbook. The County participated in the Utah Shake-Out drill to practice and test the proce-dures in the Handbook.

The County will receive the award at a recipients’ luncheon in Salt Lake City on Tuesday, June 5, 2012.

There is often a misconception about consignment stores. Many believe they are just like a thrift

store. While there are some similarities, there is one big difference: the merchan-dise at a thrift store is donated whereas merchandise at a consignment shop is placed there by the owner and they split the profits with the shop. Shopping at a consignment store is a WIN-WIN situa-tion. Here are five good reasons why:

1) Great bargains! Since most of the merchandise is second-hand, you’ll get more bang for your buck! Most con-signment store owners are very selective in what they will take in. For instance, at My Best Friend’s Closet you will find that many of the consignment items still have the tags on! Oftentimes the item was a gift or was purchased and then the owner’s size or preference changed so the item was hardly ever worn. These items are typically priced around 1/3 to ½ of the item’s original cost. Now that’s a bargain!

2) Quick changes to inventory. Items in consignment stores are brought in by many owners from all over the place. That means that the inventory can change very quickly. The rule of thumb at a consignment store is that if you find something you really like then you’d better buy it. Chances are there is only one of them and it may not be there tomorrow!

3) The store is close to you. Drop by a nearby consignment store first, then, if necessary, you can still make the drive to the “big city”. Many consign-ment stores carry well-known brand name items and will often have what you are looking for. Save gas, time and money by shopping at a consignment store first!

4) More fun! Shopping in a consignment store is fun! It can be more like a treasure hunt than a regular shopping experience. Usually there is only one of a particular item and when you find it in your size and for the right price then you truly have found a treasure! Consignment stores also foster creativity in that it is a more of a challenge to find jewelry, pants and a top that weren’t necessarily made for one another. Shoppers find new ways of putting things together they may have never thought of before.

5) Environmentally friendly. Re-cycling and reusing is huge in the world of consignment. The old saying, “One man’s junk is another man’s treasure” surely has some truth to it! People often get bored with their clothes or grow out of them long before they’re worn out or out of style – especially high quality, brand name items. With consignment the owner can recoup some of the cost of the item and the shopper buys the item at a significantly reduced price. Consignment stores are one of the few
