Power and control is the key to successful lighting.Nobody knows more about this than Pulsar, one of thepioneers of special effects lighting technology.Pulsar has achieved an enviable international reputationfor quality and reliability. Based in the heart of Cambridge, the centre of technological excellence in the UK, Pulsardevelops and manufactures award-winning productsthat have provided the core of many hi-tech installations.Pulsar’s philosophy is to provide a universal productrange that is available to everyone, with a commitmentto quality and customer service that is second to none.
Pulsar’s roots began way back in 1966, when PaulMardon built his first Sound-to-Light machine usingvalves and relays before studying Engineering andManagement at Cambridge University!Graduating with fellow student Ken Sewell in 1970,Ken joined Paul by buying a half share in the businessand by 1980 Pulsar had grown into a market leaderemploying one hundred personnel. In 1999 Pulsar entered a new stage of developmentwhen Paul purchased Ken’s half share, becoming thesole owner of the company. Today the team is still onehundred strong but with seven times the turnover. Pulsar is proud that many of their dedicated staff havebeen with the company since the early days, workingtogether to build Pulsar into the world famousmanufacturer of special effects lighting equipment thatit is today.
Over the years Pulsar has developed a strongrelationship with Clay Paky of Italy. Pulsar’s strength inelectronics and software allied with Clay Paky’sexperience of optics and mechanics has led to arange of world-beating intelligent projectors, includingthe famous Mini Scan, Golden Scan, Stage Scan,Super Scan and Stage Line. The very close technical relationship has encouragedclose commercial co-operation between the twocompanies, with joint exhibition stands across theworld and the development of a joint globaldistribution structure, based on the Clay Paky andPulsar philosophy of customer support.
The successful use of high technology productsrequires a highly-trained dealer network. Pulsar has acomprehensive training program to equip ourdistributors and dealers with the knowledge totranslate clients’ needs into successfully installedand maintained lighting systems.

The Masterpiece™ range of universal lighting controllers will control
theatre lanterns, scans, par cans, strobes, pinspots, tubelights, display
spots, downlighters, floods, multi-mirror lamps, neon, etc., and
produce every look you could ask for. The Masterpiece range breaks
the boundaries of stage, effects and environment lighting control by
having a powerful multitasking structure for simple and quick
programming and editing.
CHANNELS are the level at which Masterpiece communicates with
lighting fixtures. Channel level information is transmitted in both
Pulsar MultipleX (PMX) and DMX serial digital formats. A number of
channels are also available as 0-10V analogue.
SCENES – each containing any of the output channels recorded at
any level. Scenes allow you to save a particular look or position.
SCENE CHASES – a sequence of Scene memories. All may run
concurrently, with individual speeds, slopes, directions and triggers.
ENVIRONMENTS contain any combination of channel levels,
Scenes and Scene Chases. Each Environment memory contains all
of the items you require to produce a particular dynamic mood in
your performance. Environments also facilitate powerful structured
moving-light programming.
ENVIRONMENT CHASES – complete shows on one button. They
can even be recorded and played in real-time!
Masterpiece units feature internal non-volatile memory to protect your
programmes. In addition you can store your shows on credit card sized
RAM cards for backup, changing shows or transfer between
Masterpieces. Masterpiece units also provide an advanced security
facility making it ideal for pre-programmed applications. All
Masterpiece controllers are supplied complete with memory card,
gooseneck lamp, comprehensive manual and training video.
216 PMX dimmable output channels (Pulsar MultipleX)
512 DMX output slot patching system
0-10V analogue outputs provided for channels 1-36
216 Scenes each with individual fade in and out times
54 Scene Chases with fade in
and out times, slopes, etc.
 A Chase-Generator provides quick
generation of complex chases
 48 Environments
 6 Environment Chases
3 Zone 4 band fully patchable Sound to Light
 Configurable joystick control
 8 shows stored in memory
The Masterpiece 216 is a memory desk designed for the control of
theatre, band, discotheque, environmental and audio-visual applications.
From a theatrical point of view, the Masterpiece 216 features:
 Fully automatic timed crossfades
1
MASTERPIECE 216
MASTERPIECE MULTI-TASKING STRUCTURE
Manual crossfades using the ‘A’ and ‘B’ masters
Individual scene fade in and fade out times
Instant access to the channels, scenes and chases is always provided
Grand master and black-out provided for the whole desk.
The Masterpiece 216 accepts an audio input which is used for sound-to-
light. Pulsar Modulator’s sound-to-light circuits are built in to give 3 zones
of 4 audio bands, each patchable at any level to the 216 channels. Scene
chases can also be selected to bass and treble burst or step modes.
A fully programmable joystick is provided, that can be “patched” to any
of the 216 channels to control motors, moving mirrors, etc.
The Masterpiece 216 features a DMX patching system that allows the
standard 216 PMX channels to control upto a maximum of 512 DMX
output slots. This is particularly useful when controlling large numbers
of intelligent lighting fixtures.
The Masterpiece 216 provides a powerful Chase-Generator that allows
for quick generation of complex chase effects and aids the efficient use
of Scenes. The memory of Masterpiece 216 is able to hold 8 shows at
any one time, each show can be easily recalled.
The design and concept behind the Masterpiece 108 is similar to the
Masterpiece 216, the differences being as follows:
108 PMX dimmable output channels (Pulsar MultipleX)
256 DMX output slot patching system
 Single show stored in memory
Single show stored in memory card
48 Pulsar MultipleX (PMX) and DMX serial digital output channels
0-10V analogue outputs provided for channels 1-24
96 Scenes each containing any of the 48 channel levels
24 Scene Chases with individual speeds, slopes, directions, etc.
 22 Environments 2 Environment Chases
 3 zone, 4 band fully patchable sound-to-light
The Masterpiece 48 has been designed for smaller applications where
fewer channels of control are required, and is ideally suited to band,
discotheque and moving light applications. The multi-tasking structure
provides just the right amount of programming power required for smaller
venues that have a combination of scans, generic and strobe fixtures.
On Screen Text Labelling of all your programs
Works with Masterpiece 216, 108, 48 and Replay Unit
 Stores 2 shows in memory
 Memory card backup
An optional screen interface is available for the Masterpiece range.
This interface is designed to help the lighting operator by replacing the
program record sheets with an on screen display of the Channels, Patch,
Scenes, Chases and Environments programmed. Additionally on-line Help
Screens and Tutorial pages in many languages and a Bar Graph display
also shows the channel levels in a graphical format.
The Screen Driver additionally stores important DMX patching information
when used with the Masterpiece 216 and 108 units.
Text for up to 2 shows can be stored. A Memory card is supplied to store
the text.

The Pulsar range of control desks are designed with the aid of
computers and employ the latest technology to offer you improved
facilities and reliable operation. In our modern Cambridge factory we
believe that quality can only be assured by direct supervision of all
phases of manufacture, which is why as well as electronics assembly,
we fabricate all our own metalwork, we paint and print our own panels
and we make our own printed circuit boards in-house.
This integrated approach to manufacturing also has the advantage of lower
costs, which are passed through to customers in the final product, making
all Pulsar products keenly competitive with those of other manufacturers.
When you purchase a Pulsar product you know you can count on our many
years of experience supplying lighting controllers all over the world to give
you reliable trouble-free service and technical excellence.
All desks are fitted with high quality slider controls which have a very
smooth positive action and steel shafts for greater strength and reliability.
All models are attractively finished with anodised aluminium panels.
Using a combination of models a flexible control system may be built
up with subsequent advantages of savings in energy, installation and
cost. This provides the user with greater ease in controlling the
atmosphere for differing types of function or times of the day.
To ensure absolute safety in non-professional applications such as
schools and colleges all models are low voltage units operating on less
than 25V DC without a connection to the mains supply. They are therefore
inherently safe as they operate on less than 75V DC as specified in the
Low Voltage Directive 73/23/EEC, a further guarantee of our attention to
every detail to provide you with the best in available equipment.

The Rock Desk range brings sophisticated effects controls within the
means of all performers, without compromising the high standards of
quality that have made Pulsar Control Desks such a success across the
world. The heart of the Rock Desks is a Matrix facility which allows you
to group together any combination of the 18 Output Channels under the
control of each Matrix Input Channel making the range extremely easy
to use and flexible. Two models are available.
 8 Output Channels Programmable chase
 Speed Control Slope Control
8 Flash buttons Flash button master
The 8 channel Rock Desk incorporates all the features which have made
the Pulsar Rock Desk one of the world’s most successful Boards for
smaller live performances but with 8 output channels allocated to 8 matrix
faders. Matrix patching, flash buttons, programmable chase, speed and
crossfade slope controls are all provided. The matrix facility allows you to
group together any combination of the 8 Output Channels under the control
of each Matrix Slider making the range extremely easy to use and flexible.
12 Matrix masters 18 Output Channels
Two chases DIN and BICC outputs
Speed and Slope Control 12 Flash buttons
 Flash button master Expandable
The 18 Channel Rock Desk is equipped with 12 faders patched via a
matrix of miniature switches into 18 output channels. Each fader can
group together any of the output channels, allowing you to program reds
onto one fader, blues onto the second, greens onto the third for example,
or any other combination. Each fader has its own flash button and can
also be included in a chase. Master faders are fitted to control individually
the overall level of matrix, chase and flash button sections. Two chase
sequences can be programmed with full control over speed and
crossfade slope. The crossfade control alters the slope on the chase,
making possible slow crossfades or sharp chase effects. Chase may also
be superimposed on other settings on the matrix. Select switches are
provided for blackout/go, chase pattern 1 or 2, forward/reverse chase
and run/single step. In the single step mode the chase is activated by the
step flash buttons. either forward or reverse, by one step each time the
button is pressed. An optional foot-switch allows remote control. Output
connectors are six DIN and/or one BICC multiway socket. Designing your
lighting rig around a Pulsar Rock Desk gives you the flexibility and wide
range of effects demanded by today’s top performers.
 Blackout/Go Run/single step
 Step forward Step reverse
The Foot Switch further extends the versatility of the
Pulsar Rock Desks. It allows the performer
to control his own lighting on
stage, choosing from
blackout/go, chase run
or single step, step
forward and step reverse.
During a set, a performer can easily
switch between pre-programmed lighting scenes or activate the chaser.
Suitable for touring, the Lighting Board is made from inter-connectable
modules packaged together in attractive 19” padded wooden consoles
angled for ease of use. Pulsar Lighting 18 channel board allows the use
of preset, chase, timed crossfade and matrix outputs in any combination.
Analogue output with locking DIN sockets and DMX (1.5m 5-pin XLR
female) outputs are supplied. The lighting board configuration allows
the outputs of both, Rock

Pulsar manufacture a wide range of signal processing devices to suit
many of today’s lighting applications. The entire range encompasses units
capable of processing both analogue and digital lighting control signals.
All units are housed in robust enclosures designed to give long term
reliability when used on the road.
The Universal Interface decodes channels of serial digital information
from a Pulsar Masterpiece for example, in DMX, PMX/RS232 or MIDI
format, into channels of analogue 0-10V. It needs no mains connection
as it receives its low voltage supply from the Pulsar dimming or
switching packs which it would normally be used to control. These
power packs then control lighting effects such as ordinary tungsten,
neon, pinspots, motorised effects, etc.
The units are compact and inexpensive making the Universal Interface
attractive for lighting specialists who need flexible equipment able to
cope with the requirements of different lighting designers.
Digital input conversion to 0-10V analogue outputs for linking to
standard dimmers, switch packs, strobes, etc
Low voltage supply, needs no mains connection, receives its low
voltage supply from Pulsar power packs or power supply
Link to any lighting control desk which gives DMX digital output
Link to any Pulsar controller which supplies PMX (Pulsar MultipleX)
Link to any computer controller which supplies RS232 9600 baud
Link to any standard MIDI output device, using note and velocity or
continuous controller data
Standard 19” 1U rack mounting format
XLR 5 pin-in and thru connectors for Pulsar MultipleX (RS232) and
DMX protocols
DIN 5 pin-in and thru for MIDI protocols
DIN 8 pin female 0-10V output to devices or power packs
0-10V output channels short-circuit protected and diode isolated
Two sets of dual-in-line selector switches are fitted. One sets the
receiving start address for DMX, PMX/RS232 or MIDI while the second
selects the MIDI channel and other MIDI options. A test routine can also
be selected using one of the DIL switches.
MIDI capability offers the possibility for musicians to interface the lighting
equipment used in sequenced performances. The unit can be set to
respond to velocity information to set channel levels, as well as ‘note-off’
information, so the unit can effectively work in ‘latch’ or ‘flash’ mode.
Universal Interfaces can be set to respond to different start addresses,
allowing a large lighting rig to be controlled with a number of Interfaces.
6 LEDs are fitted with the following functions:
POWER ON shows that power is being received from the dimmer or
switching packs or power supply
INPUT SIGNAL 3 LEDs show which data format has been detected
RECEIVING DATA shows that data is reaching the Interface
DATA ERROR shows that the Interface did not recognise the last
received information.
The Interface decodes 8 bit binary data and so provides 256 levels
between 0-10V. The outputs are via isolating diodes, so they may feed
the same dimmer or switching packs as other controllers – the highest
taking priority.

The PMX/DMX – Strobe Interface is designed
to convert digital channel information into
analogue trigger signals suitable for strobe
lighting, thus enabling dimming and strobe type
lighting systems to run through a single digital data cable. The Interface
decodes a block of 18 output channels from a single data cable carrying
either Pulsar MultipleX or the DMX industry standard protocols. The unit
is housed in compact metal, fitted with mounting flanges making it ideal
for wall, ceiling or rig mounting close to the strobe units it will drive. The
Interface works by giving a +15 Volt (approximately) level out when the
PMX or DMX channel level is greater than 50%. When the channel level
is below 50% the output will be 0V. The output impedance of each
channel is 270 ohms. All the Pulsar range of strobes flash on the positive
edge of this signal. Therefore the strobe will trigger each time the
channel goes above the 50% threshold.
The Pulsar Voltage Translator provides an effective means of
interfacing modern +10V control desks with existing dimmer systems
that receive -10V signals. The unit converts 6 channels. The input
connector for the +10V desk is an 8-pin DIN whilst the output (dimmer)
connector is a trailing male Blecon compatible of 1.5m in length.
All Pulsar power packs provide a safe low
voltage (+18-22 Volt) output which is often
used to power the controller. The Power
Supply Unit can be used to provide this
required supply for applications that do
not require the use of Pulsar power packs.

The ZERO 4001 has been designed for club, band, mobile and display
applications and has been based upon the industry standard Zero 3000
and 4000 units. To these world famous units many additional features
such as full dimming and remote control have been included by our
research and development team to make the Zero 4001 the most
comprehensive 3/4 channel effects controller available today.
The Zero 4001 features a fully automatic self-adjusting mains circuitry
that allows it to operate on any supply voltage within the 100-240V 50-
60Hz range. Utilising either 3 or 4 channels the Zero 4001 can control
up to 5 Amps per channel but not exceeding the 15 Amps maximum
total load for the unit. Each channel is capable of controlling any
resistive load such as ordinary tungsten lighting and any inductive load
such as neon, pinspots, properly ballasted fluorescent lamps and
motorised effects in any combination.
5 amp, F-Fast, 5 x 20mm, ceramic, high rupture current (HRC) output
fuses are provided for protection of each channel. The fuse holders are
mounted on the back panel adjacent to the output sockets which are
available in different output types, Bulgin or IEC.
On the front panel LED indicators monitor the status for Standby / Go,
Power and additionally one monitor LED per channel shows the current
channel levels.
The Standby mode can be selected from the front panel switch and can
be overridden by an external control voltage of above 5 volts applied to
the Remote Control Socket. The channel monitors provide continuous
indication and operate even in Standby mode allowing you to
“preview” your selected effect.
A Master Dimmer knob provides control of the overall level of all the
channels allowing continuously variable intensity control from 0-100%.
4 Manual buttons are provided with the facility to flash a channel to the
Master Dimmer level at any time, providing the unit is NOT in Standby.
4 Channel Selection switches select each channel to one of 6 modes.
The Off, Half and Full modes control the static brightness of the desired
channel. The Chase mode selects that the channel is to be included in
the selected chase pattern. The Bass / Tenor / Alto / Treble mode

ROLselects the channel to Soundlite mode. Finally the Remote mode
provides for external control from other Pulsar products via the rear
panel Remote Control Socket.
Any of the channels selected to Chase will be affected by the Pattern
select switch which allows choice of one of 11 patterns or allows the
unit to Auto Change through the patterns (Flip-Flop and Flash are not
included in Auto Change). Additionally a Direction select switch selects
between Forward, Reverse, Bass direction change, Bounce/2,
Bounce/4 modes or allows the unit to Auto change the direction.
The Slope control knob varies the chase from a crossfade (gentle
fading) to a fast switching effect. A Constant / Bass Burst switch gives
either a burst of chase steps for the duration of the bass beat or a fixed
speed set by the Speed control of 10 minutes per step at Minimum to
approximately 50 steps per second at the Maximum setting.
A 3/4 Channel Chase switch on the rear panel allows 3 or 4 channel
chase patterns to be generated by the unit.
Whilst in Soundlite mode the advanced sound-to-light function
separates the incoming audio signal into 4 audio bands and uses the
volume in those bands to control the 4 channels. Automatic Volume
Control (AVC) circuits adjust for overall changes in the music volume
and tone. The Contrast control knob varies the sound-to-light effect
from a crossfade (gentle fading) to a fast switching effect.
A full range Audio Input is provided via standard 1/4” stereo IN and
THRU jack sockets mounted on the rear panel. They accept signals
from a sound system in the range of 0.5-100V RMS with a input
impedance of 33K ohms. The signal is not earthed directly within the
unit but through a resistor. This serves to eliminate any possible earth
loops and hence hum and interference on your sound equipment.
Additionally there is an electronic circuit to enhance the separation
between the sound-to-light channels to increase effectiveness.
When any channel is in Remote mode it can be controlled via the
Remote Control 8-pin DIN socket on the back panel of the unit. It
provides advanced control facilities over the Zero 4001 unit. The socket
accepts six 0-10V channels where channel 6 can be used to override
the Standby function on the front panel (channel 6>5v to GO). Channel
5 on the socket enables channels 1-4 to function in 2 modes as
follows:
Mode 1 is selected when channel 5 is below 5 volts. It allows channels
1-4, when switched to Remote, to become dimmer control channels
(0-10v = 0-Master Dimmer level).
Mode 2 is selected when channel 5 is above 5 volts. In this mode
channel inputs 1-4 have special functions, including Standby/Go,
Chase/Soundlite, Run/Step chase and chase Step. These features are
present on the Pulsar LiteFoot.
Floor-standing foot control unit perfect for bands, duos etc.
Robust construction using heavy duty switches for on the road use
Blackout/Go switch perfect for the end of each number
LiteFoot/Remote switch allows control to be passed on to another

The SW12MV is capable of controlling resistive or inductive loads,
allowing an easy and convenient way to turn on your ancillary
equipment by the flick of a switch. It is 2U high and fits comfortably in
any Pulsar 19” Rack Cabinet. 12 Neon Rocker Switches control the
power to the outputs. Each switch is capable of taking a maximum of
10 Amps resistive, 3A inductive, with a total maximum of 20 Amps.
Input and output connections for hardwiring the mains input/output
connections are provided on the rear of the units.
The SW12LV is intended for use as a remote switching controller.
Switching (or Dimming) Packs (or any Pulsar product with input DIN
sockets) may be controlled via the two DIN sockets located on the back
panel, this will allow your SW12LV to switch on your Pack(s) from a
different location. It is 1U high and fits any Pulsar 19” Rack Cabinet.
A master power switch controls the power from the controller to the 12
relevant channel switches with a red LED that indicates when power is
applied to the unit. Each channel has its own On/Off Mini Rocker
Switch, with a green monitor LED to show the state each channel is in.
Two output DIN sockets are provided on the back panel. The 12 way
switch unit is ideally used together with the SW6000 (see page 22).

The SLC4000 features are as SLC4000-19 except:
 Compact free-standing enclosure
Internally mounted 5 Amp channel protection fuses provided
Bulgin (P552) multiway channel output connector
The SLC4000 and SLC4000-19 are capable of controlling any resistive
load such as ordinary tungsten lighting and any inductive load such as
neon, pinspots and motorised effects in any combination.
A chaser function provides sequenced patterns of the 4 output
channels, additionally a sound-to-light function that separates the
audio signal into 4 audio bands.
LED channel indicators are provided on the front panel, one LED for
Standby/Go indication, one LED for mains On indication plus one
monitor LED per channel.
The sound-to-light function needs no controls. The SLC4000 has fully
automatic sound-to-light circuits with a master Automatic Volume
Control (AVC) circuit to adjust for overall changes in the music volume,
and, in addition to this, one AVC circuit for each audio band adjusts for
changes in the level between, for example, the bass and treble.
A standby/go switch provides a standby mode. During this mode the
monitor LEDs stay working so a particular pattern may be selected
before the lights are enabled. In addition a remote control standard
1/4” mono jack accepts low voltage signals from another controller to
switch the unit between standby and go; the standby/go switch on the
front panel overrides this input.
Pattern select switches allow the selection of a particular pattern or
allows the unit to auto-change the pattern after a number of chase
steps. A direction select switch is used to select forward or reverse or
allow the unit to auto-change direction.
A constant speed or bass burst switch allows an audio input to give
‘bass burst’ chases, where the chase steps for the duration of the bass
beat. The number of chase steps per beat depends upon the setting of
the Speed control. In constant speed mode the unit allows control
between approximately 1 step per second at MIN, to approximately 50
steps per second at MAX.
The SLC units require a mains supply of 100-240V, 50-60Hz (self
adjusting). The maximum load is 15 Amps maximum which will depend
on load connected.
An audio input is connected to the unit via a standard 1/4” stereo jack
socket, this accepts signals from your sound system. On the SCL4000
(floor-standing) unit, connection to the output loads is made by a Bulgin
P552 socket using Pulsar standard multiway leads or the P551 plug
provided; whilst the SLC4000-19 (19” Rack) model uses 4 standard
IEC sockets for connections to the output loads.

The Pulsar Touch Panel provides low voltage output signals to control
12 channels of lighting, motors and effects, strobes and other
controllers. The unit is supplied with 12 on/off, latching pads.
Additionally there are 24 programmable touch pads (on 2 keyboards) –
each one can control any combination of the 12 output channels.
All 3 keyboards may have Flash, Latching (toggle), Swop, or Solo
action. Swop and Solo may work globally across the keyboards. The
Chase Keyboard has 4 programmable chases with a total of 170 chase
steps available. The speed ranges from 30 steps per second to one
step every 10 minutes making the unit suitable for a number of
different uses, varying from the control of strobes at the fast speed to
environmental switching of other controllers using the very slow speed.
The chase can be manually stepped or synchronised using the remote
control step facility which can operate in slave mode accepting inputs
from other Touch Panels, or master mode to control other Touch Panels
The audio circuits for Bass Step and Bass Burst of the chases are built
into the Touch Panel itself.
To avoid inexperienced operators accidentally disrupting established
programs the new Touch Panel can deny “Operator” access to any pad.
As a low voltage controller the Touch Panel is normally connected to
one or more power packs. These are capable of controlling any lighting
effect such as neon, pinspots, helicopters and motorised effects up to
the rated power. In addition, most Pulsar controllers can be remotely
controlled directly from the Touch Panel.
This state-of-the-art controller is intended as the heart of an integrated
control system. A combination of individual effects and lighting
controllers can be centrally operated from one Touch Panel by the
lighting operator. Alternatively the Touch Panel can be programmed to
automatically control the whole lighting system without an operator.
3 channels (shown above) or 4 channels (shown opposite)
Individually selectable 3 zones of output to lights
Dimming (0-10V output) for use with remote Pulsar Power packs
Modulator 4 also features two auxiliary sliders
Master and Individual channel control sliders
 Chaser: Constant speed/Music rev-up/Music rev-down/Bass step.
 Reversing: Forward/Reverse/Auto reverse/Bass reverse
Patterns: 8 patterns + auto change
Speed, Effect mix, Sound-to-light decay and contrast sliders
Remote enable socket for Touch Panel input
The Pulsar Modulators both provide features that allows the operator
complete control over the lighting. Each unit possesses the same basic
controls. Individual channel sliders are used either as straight-forward
level controls or to set the average brightness. Each channel is also
fitted with a flash button.
The chaser section offers a very comprehensive range of eight pre-
programmed chase sequences which can be individually selected or
automatically selected in turn through the auto-change facility. Chase
can be at constant speed (set by a speed control) or controlled by
music using music rev-up, music rev-down and bass step modes. The
reversing section of the Modulator provides forward, reverse, auto-
change and bass reversing functions. The operator can mix between
combinations of chase and sound-to-light for some fantastic effects.
The sound-Light decay slider enables the operator to vary the decay
time of the lights.
The Master Contrast is one of the most important controls because
with it the operator sets the mood of the lighting. As the contrast level
is increased the effect produced changes from soft to more dramatic.
A Master Dimmer controls the overall lighting level and three Zone
switches are fitted allowing the unit to control up to three different
displays of lighting.
The units produce a low voltage output and are designed to be used
with Pulsar range of dimmer packs.
A zone switch remote control socket. This means that each zone can
be switched remotely by a Touch Panel. The Modulator 4 also has a
three/four channel select switch which means that the unit can be
used as part of a three channel system initially but upgraded at a later
date to a four channel system as required.
Over the years the sophistication of controllers has increased with the
improvements in electronics technology generally. The Modulators use
microprocessors to offer a greater range of effects than was previously
possible, but the use of high technology in itself is of no value without
the close co-operation of our customers and dealers world-wide. Their
advice and suggestions have helped us to produce two units which, we
hope, meet your requirements – and a little more besides.

Pulsar’s Datapak range has been specially designed with cost effective
permanent installations in mind. In particular, the digital input and
ability to be either wall mounted or fitted into 19” rack cabinets makes
the range ideally suited to high quality professional applications. The
Datapak range of power packs provides the same electronic reliability
as our full range of rack mounted dimming and switching packs. The
special design features allow the Datapak units to be either wall or
rack mounted. All models within the range are capable of receiving the
3 major control standards – Analogue 0-10V, PMX and DMX using an
internal demultiplexing system with full diagnostic indication that
makes them ideal for large scale installation.
All units in the Datapak range will accept mains voltage in the range of
100 – 230 VAC +/-10%, 1 or 3 phase, star or delta, frequency 48-62Hz.
There is no voltage selector as the electronics automatically adjusts to
the incoming voltage and frequency. Three phase supply neons are also
provided to show when there is mains voltage at the Datapak. An
electronics on/off switch with built in indicator neon, controls
the power to the electronics.
DATAPAK™ RANGE
19
Pulsar Datapaks use the very latest techniques (pioneered by Pulsar) to
completely eliminate the need for routine adjustments. The
sophisticated circuits we have developed, are self stabilising against
changes in mains voltage, mains frequency, top and bottom control
voltage levels, preheat drift, drifting of component values, etc.
On the front panel two sets of indicators are provided; fuse blown
neons (Red) which show when their channel fuse has blown, and
output monitor neons (Green) that show the status of the output.
All dimming versions feature a lamp preheat switch which prevents the
lamp filaments from cooling right down. This can be used to prevent
heavy surge currents that occur when cold filaments are switched on,
thus extending lamp life.
Additionally, input smoothing is used to control attack and decay times
to extend lamp life and ensure flicker free operation.
Dimming versions allow for channels to be selected to “Switch” mode
allowing the pack to be used for both dimming or switching.
The Datapak range features many internal controls and indicators
designed to assist the installation and service engineers. Some of the
internal features include:
Normal/Full-on channel test switches – one per channel. The switches
should be in the “norm” position for control from a desk. Use the “full on”
position for testing and diagnostics without having to connect a desk.
Output monitor LEDs (Green) – one per channel, indicating its status
before the output circuitry (triac, choke etc.). Thus it may be used in
conjunction with the output “monitor neon” to indicate the location of
a possible fault.
Digital circuitry LEDs (Red) – there are four LEDs provided. The DMX
and PMX (Pulsar MultipleX using RS232/423) LEDs show the type of
data being received by the Datapak, the ERR LED indicates an ERRor in
the received data, and the RX LED shows when data is being received.
The software automatically recognises both DMX and PMX.
Digital start address select and test switches are provided to allow the
installer to select the required digital start address for the Datapak. A
test switch also provides an automatic internal test sequence where a
block of 3 channels moves through the Datapak channels.
Analogue 0-10V control signals are connected to an internal terminal
block if hardwiring or external 8-pin DIN sockets.
* A current supply is available to supply a Pulsar desk from pin 1 of all
DIN connectors, the supply voltage is 18-25 Volts at 120mA.
As with all Pulsar power packs, control cables do not need to be
screened as the inputs of the Datapak are filtered against hum and
interference. The input impedance of each channel is 100k ohms
enabling cable runs to be as long as necessary and the minimum size of
their conductors is limited only by considerations of mechanical strength.
Digital PMX or DMX control input signals are connected by internal
terminal block or 2 external 5-pin XLR sockets.

These new units complement our range of packs. They may be walll
mounted for use with our Datapaks or rack mounted (4U high) for use with
our Rackpaks. They provide 2 pole overcurrent protection and isolation -
particularly useful for 3 phase delta supplies. Our tests show that breakers
are not fast enough to protect triacs against short circuits - the fuses in
our packs continue to perform that function. The breakers are mounted on
a PCB and each is provided with input and output, lever operated, terminal
blocks for speed of wiring and for reliability of connection.

Our range of fully CE marked luminaires is suitable for many
applications and is conceived, designed and manufactured to the
highest standards in our Cambridge manufacturing facility.
The luminaire range covers usage from effects spots suitable for
mobile, discotheque and effects applications through to stage lanterns
suitable for educational, stage performances and architectural use.
In terms of specification and appearance, our luminaire range gives
outstanding value for money and performance.
Our luminaires are available in finishes which include Black, Silver,
White and Gold.
 100 – 300W ES lamp
 Includes colour gels
 Optional barndoor
The Superspot is a tough,
inexpensive spotlight, suitable for
any ES reflector lamp up to 300
watts. The well-ventilated pressed
steel body is made to exacting
standards in our own workshops. It has a tough stove enamel black
finish and is fitted with a locking cup. The Superspot comes complete
with three secondary colour gels. An integral gel holder saves the
expense of gel frames (Gel size: 141 mm x 141 mm). Two useful
accessories are available for use with the Superspot.
Firstly the Pulsar Colour Wheel is designed to slip into the gel holder
and provide continually changing colours. Secondly, a barndoor
attachment helps to shape the spread of the beam from the lamp. This
helps to prevent spillage into areas outside the design scheme.
 300W PAR 56 lamp
 Spot, flood or wide flood
 Accepts colour gels
The PAR 56 lantern uses a PAR 56
300 watt sealed beam lamp to
deliver light very efficiently to the
target. This lamp is available in
several different beam angles, so
that some flexibility exists in controlling the
beam width by substituting different lamps for different jobs.
 300-l000w PAR 64/56
 Spot, flood or wide flood
 Accepts colour gels
An attractively designed,
rugged, lightweight
lantern that will accept
either a 300W PAR 56 or
a 500W-1000W PAR 64
lamp. These lamps are
available in a variety of beam
angles ranging from narrow spot to wide flood. The filter change
system is extremely simple to use especially as its built-in filter frame
will accept untrimmed gels. The safety features of the unit meets all
the appropriate standards and are CE marked.

PAR 64/56 LANTERN
 650W(T26), 500W(T18) or 300W(M38)
 8.5 – 68 degree beam
 Includes gel frame
This model is the first in the
650W stage lantern range. The
focus is adjustable from 68
degrees down to 8.5 degrees
giving a very wide range and
making it possible to use the unit as a spot or flood. Other features
include integral safety bracket, locking cup, sculptured matching lock-
off and focus control knobs for smooth, accurate positioning and
focussing. The unit has a positioning handle on rear of unit, sprung gel
frame retaining clip, hinged bottom tray for safety and ease when
changing lamps, is insulation flash-tested, has cable heat protection
and is supplied with one gel holder. The unit features an interchangeable
lens and system to convert the unit to a pebble convex lantern.
 650W(T26), 500W(T18) or 300W(M38)
 6 – 71 degree beam
 Harder edged beam
ThIs unit comprises the same
650W housing as the 650W
Fresnel but fitted with a pebble
convex lens. The advantage this
gives is that a tighter focus can be
obtained down to 6 degrees, making the unit a very effective spot.
 Dual lens zoom/focus
 14 – 36 degree beam
 4 Shutter blades
 Optional iris & gobo holder
Completing the 650W range is the 650W Profile Spot. Designed to full
professional standards this unit enables the lighting designer to achieve
a fully-focussable hard or soft-edged beam, together with all the usual
facilities expected on a profile spot of this type. The gate is fitted with four
stainless-steel beam-shaping shutters together with runners to accept
an optional gobo holder or iris, giving full control of the light beam.
Complementing the Pulsar stage spotlights is the range of Pulsar
cyclorama floods. Using up to 500W linear lamps these units provide even
floodlighting over a wide area. The units are available
singly or in battens of three or four.
 Fitted with automatic self-
resetting fuse
 5.1 volt, 2500 hour tapping
 6.0V, high brightness tapping
 230V transformer
Pulsar pinspots are fitted with
solid-state fusing, which gives
complete protection, although tolerating
short-term abuse without tripping
unnecessarily. No longer is it necessary to dismantle an
installed pinspot after fuse failure because the fuse will be
automatically re-set after about one minute, provided the fault
condition is no longer present. Protection covers all eventualities. The
pinspot offers two possible voltages – 6.0v for high brightness giving
nominal lamplife of 250 hours – excellent for intermittent use on
controllers, and 5.1v giving a nominal lamplife of 2500 hours –
excellent for continuous use. Taking the various features together, high
quality transformer, solid state fusing and extra long life for the lamps,
we can truly say we manufacture a `fit and forget pinspot’.

To provide an all round solution to lighting control, Pulsar have
introduced a range of 19” Mains Distribution Units. Comprising some
14 units, this range has been designed to provide customers with the
means to distribute mains supplies to dimmer and switching packs and
takes all the guess-work out of specifying consumer units.
Pulsar’s distribution panels have been specifically matched and
designed to be completely compatible with all Pulsar products. All the
units are tailored for 19” rack mounting, either in fixed installation or in
touring racks.
Common features to each panel include RCCB protection, phase
indication and earth/neutral fault indication. In addition each one is
fitted with a front panel courtesy socket. The distribution units are
available in 2 sizes, 180 Amp and 360 Amp, to suit most requirements.
