The beauty and the complexity of the subject drive me into discovering more of its secrets. The longer I immerse myself into the subject, the more enthusiastic I become. I was happy and honored to receive the news that I came top in the world for Additional Mathematics in IGCSE. I would like to thank my mathematics teacher, Mr Ozkan, who gave his full support in teaching the subject as well as spending time with the class for further studies into mathematics. I believe the reason for my success in the subject is that I can connect every concept of a topic together and have a thorough understanding of everything in the subject. This is why I am able to tackle any questions with ease. In order to achieve this, I always study much deeper into each topic, and never leave anything I do not understand behind. Building up interest in mathematics is another key for my success. I find mathematics enjoyable and therefore I spend lots of time investigating deeper into the subject in my personal time, which allows me to learn interesting aspects of mathematics and special ways of solving problems. Furthermore, studying mathematics is a long process, which means that it takes time to absorb each concept. For people who aim for high scores, revision should not start within the last few months before the exams. A lot of exercises must be completed to build up problem solving skills. This includes doing loads of past paper questions so that the style of the questions would look familiar during the exam. A person’s psychological state during the exam is another important element to be considered. I have confidence in myself to do well in the exam and have the determination to give my answers as perfect as they could be. Also, keeping calm in tackling unfamiliar problems would be helpful. We should always remind ourselves that every solution comes from what we have learnt, and therefore there will always be a way for us to figure out the answers ourselves. Overall, I believe that this achievement is a form of recognition of my hard work in the subject. From it, I have learnt that in order to be successful, we should always be determined and never give up on any chances to get a better result. Connie Chan Hong Lui – Top in the world (Food and Nutrition) I still can’t forget the night that I received a call from my friend who told me I had been awarded ‘Top in the world’ by Cambridge for the subject ‘Food and Nutrition’. For me, it was a moment that I will never forget. Out of the many subjects that I took in IGCSE, Food and Nutrition had always been one of my favourite subjects. One of the reasons for that was we got to make and taste food in lessons. During the two- year course, I always looked forward to having practical lessons. I enjoyed cooking with my classmates and tasting our delicious food. On top of the practical lessons, we had theory lessons to help us to learn the facts of food safely, cooking methods and nutritional information. Although the theory lessons may not have been as interesting as the practical ones, once I understood the relevance of the theories in our daily lives. I developed an interest. In preparation for the final exams, I made revision booklets for the theory paper. While revising at home, I loved reading the notes aloud in order to strengthen my retention of unfamiliar ideas. I enjoyed preparing for my practical exam using many methods, such as flipping through the pages of recipe books and writing down the possible dishes that I could modify to meet the nutritional requirements for the practical examination. It was important to practice cooking for building our confidence and minimizing the possibility of mistakes that we might make under stress, as we only had two and a half hours to make five dishes, I would like to thank my teacher, Miss Sillince, for her wonderful lessons and tremendous support throughout the course. I would also like to thank the school for providing abundant resources and opportunities that have facilitated my learning.
