I’m not feeling up to par today. How do I know if I should participate at Mass in person or

via livestream? Check your symptoms below. When in doubt, please stay home and partici-

pate via livestream Mass. The obligation to attend Mass on Sundays continues to be waived

during this pandemic. Thank You for being proactive and caring about yourself and others in

the community.

Dear Friends in Christ,

Synodal Process

Our Holy Father, Pope Francis, has called us as a Church to a “synodal journey”. The

word “synod” means “gathering” and often refers to a significant gathering of God’s peo-

ple on the diocesan, national, or international level. In anticipation of the international

synod in 2023, Pope Francis invites the church to discern together how to move forward

on the path towards being a more synodal Church in the longterm. In our local church, it

means that this will be a time of listening and dialogue between now and April, as we re-

flect on how we “journey together” as a Church and discern how the Spirit is calling us.

Next Sunday, October 17th

, Archbishop Etienne will celebrate the opening Mass for the

Synodal Process at St. James Cathedral at 5:30 p.m. As a parish, in union with the

Church throughout the world, we will offer a prayer to the Holy Spirit at all the Masses

next weekend. This is the same prayer to the Holy Spirit that was prayed before every

session of the Second Vatican Council. You will be hearing more about how to participate

in the synodal process in the weeks to come. May the good Lord bless our church as we

enter this process of listening and dialogue about how we journey together as People of

God.

Prayer to the Holy Spirit

We stand before You, Holy Spirit, as we gather together in Your Name.

With You alone to guide us, make Yourself at home in our hearts;

Teach us the way we must go and how we are to pursue it.

We are weak and sinful; do not let us promote disorder.

Do not let ignorance lead us down the wrong path nor partiality influence our actions.

Let us find in You our unity so that we may journey together to eternal life

and not stray from the way of truth and what is right.

All this we ask of You, who are at work in every place and time,

in the communion of the Father and the Son, forever and ever. Amen

Q&A: Who’s Who

Who are the catechumens we hear so much about in church?

Trying to figuring out who’s who is a common human activity. At weddings, funerals,

family and class reunions, we like to know who we are sharing our time with and what rela-

tionship they haveor don’t haveto us. So it is with the church that gathers on Sunday

for Mass. Many of the faces are as familiar as our own, but as with any healthy group, new

faces are to be expected and welcomed. Some may be visitors, some may be fellow Catho-

lics who have recently moved into the neighborhood, and some may be responding to a

faint or fiery call to find out more about Christ and his church. The church opens its arms to

these seekers with the wisdom and rituals of the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults

(commonly called the RCIA).

People who are seeking to learn more about the Catholic faith and its mission fall into

two main groups: catechumens and candidates. (Catechumen is a strange word. It comes

from a Greek word meaning “to resound.” The words catechist and catechism are related to

it.) A catechumen is someone who has never been baptized; he or she may be an adult, a

teenager, or a young child. The journey to the waters of baptism normally takes place over

the course of a year.

After an initial period of inquiry into the Catholic faith, those ready to do so publicly

declare their intent to join the church and are accepted into the “order of catechumens.”

Then, with the help of catechists, sponsors, and the entire community of believers, the cate-

chumens begin to share in the life of the community and do what Christians do: read the

scriptures, gather on Sundays with other believers, and bear wit-

ness to the message of Jesus in word and deed. Often the catechu-

mens are dismissed on Sundays after the homily to continue re-

flecting on the day’s scriptures.

The liturgical year plays an intimate part in their introduction

to the Christian way of life. Lent is a period of intensified prepa-

ration, beginning with a ritual when the catechumens are chosen

(“elected”) for initiation. Now they are called “the elect.” At the

Easter Vigil, the elect are baptized, confirmed, and welcomed to

the Lord’s table for the first time. The Easter Vigil marks a high

point in their journeyin much the same way that a wedding day

is a high point in a couple’s relationshipbut, of course, the ad-

venture has just begun.

Hope and Healing After Abortion

“I am like the sick sheep that strays from the rest of the flock. Unless the Good Shepherd takes

me on His shoulders and carries me back to His fold, my steps will falter, and in the very effort

of rising, my feet will give way.” St . Jerome

Have you felt isolated from life itself as you have struggled since the day of your abortion de-

cision? Allow The Good Shepherd to scoop you up into His merciful embrace and carry you

The Gift of Adoption

Adoption takes much courage on the part of both birthmother and for the couple adopting.

But it is an action to be encouraged and supported as we seek alternatives to abortion.

Many birthmothers have told their story of feeling desolate on discovering they were preg-

nant. Life Choice centers provide an ultrasound and other free assistance. Pregnancy Aid

offers support from the moment they express a desire to preserve the life of the child.

Adoption gives a couple the joy of having a child. That can be part of the decision making.
