John W. Dargavel MedalThe 2004 John W. Dargavel Medal has been presented to H. Joseph Schutte and posthumously to Neil L. Pruitt, Sr. These two visionary leaders have championed the interests of independent community pharmacy with commitment and dedication. Honoring John W. Dargavel, NCPAʼs Executive Secretary from 1933 to 1961, the Medal is presented annually

to recognize individuals who provide outstanding service to community pharmacy.

H. Joseph Schutte, a graduate of the University of Kentucky College of Pharmacy, began his career as a representative for Eli Lilly and Company. His purchase of Jeffersontown Pharmacy led to the establishment of Pharmacare Inc., a company that provided services for thousands of patients in long-

term care facilities in Kentucky, Indiana and Ohio. Mr. Schutte currently serves as the Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of GeriMed Inc., a for-profit corporation that he founded to provide group purchasing services and programs to long-term care pharmacies throughout the United States.

Mr. Schutte has actively served his profession including election as the President and Chairman of the Board of the Jefferson County Academy of Pharmacy, a four-year appointment to the Kentucky Board of Pharmacy including a term as its President, membership and committee work with the Kentucky Pharmacists Association, membership in the American Society of Consulting Pharmacists (ASCP) and the National Community Pharmacists Association (NCPA) as well as a term as President of the National Council for Prescription Drug Program. Since 1975, he has held a number of leadership positions in the NCPA which culminated in his election to its Presidency in 1985-1986. Mr. Schutte has been a member of the Board of Directors of the NCPA Foundation since 1999.

From a single independent pharmacy in northeastern Georgia, Neil Pruitt grew his company, United Health Services into a multifaceted health care organization with operations in several southeastern states. He graduated from the University of Georgia School of Pharmacy and served as president, director and chairman of the board of the Georgia Pharmaceutical Association, president of the

National Association of Retail Druggists and a member of the Board of Directors of the NCPA Foundation. Mr. Pruitt was active in a wide range of civic and charitable organizations and held public office as Mayor of Toccoa, Georgia.

Mr. Pruitt and Mr. Schutte continue to raise the bar for outstanding professional service to independent community pharmacy through the establishment of the NCPA Pruitt-Schutte Student Business Plan Competition. Launched in 2003, the Competition is designed to promote interest in independent community pharmacy ownership in the nationʼs colleges of pharmacy. “The business plan competition is symbolic of the entrepreneurial spirit that Neil exhibited throughout his career,” said Nancy Pruitt, Mr. Pruittʼs wife. “Neil was also a tremendous advocate for students. He would be very pleased to have his name associated with this competition.”

December 2004

To the members of the National Community Pharmacists Association:

Since its inception in 1953 as the John A. Dargavel Memorial Foundation, the NCPA Foundation has been committed to supporting independent pharmacists and pharmacy students. The NCPA Foundationʼs Golden Jubilee Scholarship Endowment, established in celebration of its 50th anniversary, will assure the opportunity to develop future leaders within the profession. Your continuing support of this Endowment will enable us to invest in academically motivated students by providing scholarships to support the educational goals of prospective independent practitioners.

To promote independent community pharmacy ownership in our colleges of pharmacy, the NCPA Pruitt-Schutte Student Business Plan Competition invited NCPA Student Chapters to participate in the Competition with the goal of developing a business plan to start a new pharmacy or assume ownership of an existing pharmacy. We are pleased to share the results of the inaugural competition and congratulate the winning team from Mercer Universityʼs Southern School of Pharmacy.

We encourage you to consider remembering the important work of the NCPA Foundation as you plan your estate. Including a bequest to support our efforts to advance the interests of the profession will help ensure that we are able to continue providing scholarship support to pharmacy students, funding research and helping our members in times of disaster. A gift to the Foundation is a simple and easy way to express your appreciation for all the benefits that the profession has provided for you and your family.

The NCPA Foundation has developed a multifaceted approach to the advancement of independent community pharmacy practice. We will continue to sponsor activities and programming designed to advance independent pharmacy and to help those individuals who aspire to the pharmacy profession.

Sincerely,

Charles M. West, P.D.PresidentNCPA Foundation

Pruitt-Schutte Student Business Plan CompetitionA new initiative honoring two great champions of independent pharmacy, H. Joseph Schutte who currently serves on the NCPA Foundation Board of Trustees and the late Neil L. Pruitt, Sr. who was serving as a Foundation Trustee at the time of his death in 2003, is enabling future community pharmacists to learnvaluable lessons about the business world. Sponsored by the H. Joseph Schutte family, the Neil L. Pruitt, Sr. family and Mallinckrodt, Inc., the Pruitt-Schutte Student Business Plan Competition, the first program of its kind in the pharmacy profession, encourages, facilitates and recognizes pharmacy student entrepreneurship.

NCPA Student Chapters were invited to participate in the Competition with the goal of developing a business plan to start a new pharmacy or assume ownership of an existing pharmacy. A sponsor or mentor, such as their NCPA faculty liaison, another faculty member or a local entrepreneur in their community, provided guidance and assistance to the participating students. Submitted business plans were evaluated by practicing pharmacy owners, a faculty member and an individual with financing expertise related to small business ownership. This yearʼs live competition judges were Robert Greenwood, R.Ph. from Greenwood Drug Inc., Waterloo, Iowa, Edward J. Hesterlee, Pharm.D. from Mallinckrodt Inc., St. Louis, Missouri, Steve Morton, C.P.A., M.B.A. from Morton Pharmacy, Neenah, Wisconsin, Jim Vincent, R.Ph. from the NCPA Foundation and Bryan Yourdon, M.B.A. from KeyCentrix, Wichita, Kansas.

The inaugural competition garnered submissions from sixteen pharmacy schools. Three finalist teams presented their business plans during NCPAʼs Annual Convention in Boston, Massachusetts. Mercer Universityʼs Southern School of Pharmacy team won the Pruitt-Schutte Student Business Plan Competition. Placing as first and second runner-up respectively were the plans submitted and presented by Washington State University and the University of Kansas.

Mercer University participants included Teresa Hesher, Gabriel McLemore, Cory Patterson and Scott Tomerlin, with Richard Jackson, R.Ph., Ph.D. serving as their advisor. The team received $3,000 for their NCPA student chapter, and an additional $3,000 to promote independent pharmacy was contributed to the school in their Deanʼs name. The team and their advisor and their Dean will receive complimentary registration and travel expenses to NCPAʼs Multiple Locations Conference in St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands.

Washington State University was represented by Jennifer Aichele, Jeana Little, Jaclyn Lopez and Silvia Perez. Linda Garrelts-MacLean, R.Ph. provided guidance and assistance to the team. They received $2,000 for their NCPA student chapter, and a contribution of $2,000 was made to their school in the Deanʼs name to promote independent pharmacy.

Rob Wenzel from the University of Kansas presented his plan that he developed with the assistance of his advisor, David Rankin, R.Ph. He received $1,000 for his NCPA Student Chapter, and a contribution of $1,000 to promote independent pharmacy was made to his school in the Deanʼs name.

George E. BensonIn Memoriam 1919 - 2004George E. Benson said “pharmacy prepares you for anything.” And he should know. As he built a successful community pharmacy practice, raised his family and served his community and his profession, he put the knowledge and skills he gained as he prepared to be a pharmacist to work.

A graduate of the University of Washington School of Pharmacy, Mr. Bensonʼs 47-hour work week necessitated that he restrict his course schedule. A four-year stint in the United States Navy serving his country further postponed the completion of his pharmacy education. But he didnʼt lose sight of his goal and following his military service, he returned to school and earned his pharmacy degree.

Mr. Bensonʼs first job at Lincolnʼs Pharmacy in Seattle turned out to be much more than the first opportunity to use his long sought degree. It was there that he “fell madly in love” with Evelyn Leyman, the woman who would become his wife for 57 years and the mother of their three children. Together, they owned Bensonʼs Mission Pharmacy for 46 years so named because it was located opposite a Catholic church. A wave of robberies, led him to seek a position on the Seattle City Council. During his twenty-year Council tenure, the crime rate dropped significantly and his wife earned the nickname, “Annie Oakley of Capital Hill”, for her fearless efforts in reducing robberies.

A former Seattle city councilman known for his accessibility and his willingness to walk the streets and talk to people, Mr. Benson was honored with the renaming of an entire streetcar line. “The George Benson Waterfront Streetcar Line” recognized his efforts in bringing the line into existence. Mr. Bensonʼs boyhood dream of becoming a streetcar conductor led him and his wife to Melbourne, Australia to choose the historic 1920s tan-and-green, wood-paneled trolley cars that shuttle 400,000 riders per year. In commenting on the surprise honor Mr. Benson said, “When I look back at all the work, it was worth it. Itʼs gratifying to see the line successful.”

Mr. Benson served as the President of NCPA (then NARD) for a term. He was a Director of the NCPA Foundation Board for over twenty years and was continuing to serve the profession as a Director Emeritus. When asked to describe the best part of serving on the NCPA Foundation Board, he responded, “reviewing the applications for scholarships.” Generations of pharmacy students are grateful for his efforts to help them achieve their educational and professional goals and become “prepared for anything.”

Help Ensure the Future of the ProfessionLatest statistics reveal that only 42 percent of Americans have current wills. This research reflects a significant drop from 2000 when 47 percent of adults reported have completed a will. Three reasons are listed consistently as why individuals delay or do not complete this important document. Many say they are reluctant to address their mortality. Some believe that their estates are not large enough to merit distribution through a will, and still others say they donʼt want to take the time or spend the money to create a will.

If you are one of these individuals, try thinking about this responsibility in a different way. A will can improve and stabilize the financial security of yourself and your family. It is not just a transfer of money and possessions; it is your last opportunity to express your values and show your love to your family and others who are important to you as well as your appreciation for organizations that have played a significant role in your life such as the NCPA.

“Including a bequest to the NCPA Foundation in your will is an easy way to give back to the profession that has been good to all of us,” shared Dr. Charles West. “The Foundation supports the profession in many ways including student scholarships, research to advance the profession and assistance for pharmacists in times of disaster,” he continued. “Making a gift to the NCPA Foundation in your will helps to ensure that we can continue this important support of our profession.”

NCPA Foundation Student Loan ProgramThe NCPA Foundation Student Loan Program is a significant source of educational financial assistance for pharmacy students. The program has provided over 10,000 low interest loans totaling almost $5 million to help future pharmacists to achieve their educational goals. During the 2003-04 academic year, the Foundation provided loans totaling $72,500 to 28 pharmacy students.

To address the rising cost of pharmacy education, the Foundation has increased the amount of funding available to applicants. Full-time pharmacy students enrolled in their last 5 semesters of school who meet the loan criteria may request up to $2,500 each semester.
