Preface

Warning, Cautions, and NotesWarnings, Cautions, and Notes are found throughout this manual where applicable. The associated icons in warnings and cautions are used to quickly identify a potential condition that could result in the consequences described below if precautions are not taken. Notes clarify and provide additional information to assist the user.

WARNING: The warning symbol means danger. You are in a situation that could cause bodily injury or death. Before you work on any equipment, be aware of the hazards involved with elec-trical and RF circuitry and be familiar with standard practices for preventing accidents.

CAUTION: The caution symbol means the potential exists for equipment damage or loss of data. NOTE: Notes contain helpful suggestions or references to material not covered in the document.

SafetyAny personnel involved in installation, operation, or service of units included in a Powerwave repeater systemmust understand and follow the points below:

❑ Powerwave repeaters are designed to receive and amplify signals from one or more base stations and retransmit the signals to one or more mobile stations. And, also to act the other way round, that is to receive signals from one or more mobile stations, amplify and retransmit the signals to the base stations. Powerwave repeater systems must be used exclusively for this purpose and nothing else.

❑ Units supplied from the mains must be connected to grounded outlets and in conformity with the local prescriptions.

❑ For outdoor use, the power cord should meet at least IP65 encapsulation requirements. Do not turn the main power on until you are ready to commission the equipment.

❑ Power supply units supplied from the mains contain dangerous voltage that can cause electric shock. Disconnect the mains prior to any work in such a unit. Local regulations are to be followed when servicing such units. Only authorized service personnel are allowed to service units while the mains are connected.

❑ When opened, the cover must be secured. Otherwise, the cover can be closed by the wind and cause your fingers getting pinched or your head being hit.

❑ When working on an a repeater on high ground, for instance on a mast or pole, be careful not to drop parts or the entire repeater. Falling parts can cause serious personal injury.

❑ All RF transmitting units, including the ALR Compact Repeater will generate radio signals and thereby give rise to electromagnetic fields that may be hazardous to the health of any person who is extensively exposed close to an antenna.

❑ Beryllium oxide (BeO) may be contained in power devices, for instance in dummy loads in directional couplers (DCC), in combiner units (CMB), and in attenuators on the FON board. Beryllium oxide is poisonous if present as dust or smoke that can be inhaled. Do not file, grind, machine, or treat these parts with acid

❑ Coaxial cables used in many Powerwave systems have the insulation made of PTFE, polytetrafluoro ethylene, that gives off small amounts of hydrogen fluoride when heated. Hydrogen fluoride is poisonous. Do not use heating tools when stripping off coaxial cable insulation. No particular measures are to be taken in case of fire because the emitted concentration of hydrogen fluoride is very low.

❑ A NiCd battery is mounted in the repeater on the FON PCBA. These batteries contain environmental poisonous substances. If replaced, the old batteries should be disposed of as stated in the local prescriptions.

❑ A lithium battery is permanently mounted in repeater CU units, and in FON and OCM units. Due to the risk of explosion, this battery must only be removed from the board by an Powerwave authorized service technician.

❑ The FON unit contains a Class 1M laser transmitter that emits 2–4 mW invisible laser radiation at 1550 nm during operation and is intended for a restricted location. Avoid direct exposure from a disconnected laser transmitter or fiber cord. For example, do not view directly with optical instruments (magnifiers) and do not view directly with non-attenuating optical instruments.

❑ The FON Unit has this label attached:

❑ Do not power up the FON unit if a fiber cable is not connected to the fiber output UL port, or if a fiber cable is connected to the port but disconnected at the other end.

❑ Never look at the end of a fiber cable. The 1310nm and 1550nm laser light is not visible. Always use an instrument, such as a power meter, to detect signaling.

Warning SignsThe following warning signs must be observed and be kept clean and readable.

Beryllium oxideThis warning sign to the left is applied to boards and units which contain beryllium oxide parts.

This warning sign below is applied at the bottom, inside the cabinet, below the power supply unit.

Human Exposure to RF RadiationSafe distances must be kept when working around antennas. The following paragraphs describe the cautions to be aware of during the installation and maintenance of antenna systems and how to calculate safety distances needed for RF radiation at different antenna power and frequencies.

Repeater AntennasTo be able to receive and transmit signals, a repeater is connected to a donor antenna directed towards the base station and a service antenna directed towards the coverage area. A fiber optic cable from the base station might, however, be substituted for the donor antenna.

Installation and Maintenance of Antenna SystemsInstallation and maintenance of all antenna systems must be performed with respect to the radiation exposure limits for public areas. The antenna radiation level is affected by the output power, antenna gain,

and transmission devices such as cables, connectors, splitters and feeders. Also have in mind the system minimum coupling loss, typically between 25dB and 35dB, is determined by a standard with the purpose to protect base stations from noise and other performance dropping effects.

Radiation ExposureThe World Health Organization (WHO) and International Commission on Non-Ionising Radiation Protection (ICNIRP) have determined recommendations for radiation exposure. ICNIRP recommends not to exceed the following radiation power for public exposure:

Electrostatic Discharge (ESD) ESD can severly damage essential parts of the equipment if not handled carefully. Parts on Printed Circuit Board Assemblies (PCBA) as well as other parts in the equipment are sensitive to ESD. Never touch the PCBA or uninsulated conductor surfaces unless absolutely necessary.

If you must handle the PCBAs or uninsulated conductor surfaces, use ESD protective equipment or first touch the chassis with your hand. Never let your clothes touch PCBAs or uninsulated conductor surfaces and always store PCBAs in ESD-safe bags.

Chapter 1 Product Description

IntroductionThis manual contains installation and maintenance information and procedures for the ISG Interface Board.

Scope of ManualThis manual is intended for use by service technicians familiar with similar types of equipment. It contains service information required for the equipment described and is current as of the printing date. Changes which occur after the printing date may be incorporated by a complete manual revision or alternatively as additions. For details on configuring the software of the ISG Interface, refer to 044-05312 ISG Interface Board Configuration Manual. The manual is organized into chapters as follows:

Product DescriptionThe ISG Interface Board provides a packet data interface between network management systems and repeaters and wideband radio heads. Both IP and SNMP connections are available as well as a GPS interface for automated tuning based on location.

System TopologyFigure 1-1 illustrates packet data on wireless and Ethernet networks connections.

Chapter 3 Installation

IntroductionThis chapter contains unpacking, inspection, and instructions for installing and powering up the ISG Interface Board.

Site SurveyPowerwave recommends that a site survey be performed prior to equipment ordering or installation. Performing a detailed site survey reduces or eliminates installation and turn-up delays. Pay particular attention to power plant capacity, cooling needs, floor space, and RF/DC cabling/breaker requirements.

Unpacking and InspectionThis ISG Interface Board has been operated, tested, and calibrated at the factory. Carefully open the container to remove the card. Retain all packing material that can be reassembled in the event the card must be returned to the factory. Perform the following steps:

❑ Visually inspect for damage that may have occurred during shipment in the presence of the delivery person if possible.

❑ Check for evidence of water damage, cracked or broken PC board, loose or missing components, or extraneous packing material in connectors.

❑ Use the packing list to verify all ordered parts are included.

If the ISG Interface Board is damaged, determine the extent of damage and file a claim with the carrier.

If the ISG Interface Board must be returned to factory, please contact the factory for a Return Material Authorization (RMA). See page 3-7 for more information.

Installation procedureThe ISG Interface Board is typically mounted in the lower right section of the ALR repeater compartment. Due to different configurations for the ALR Repeater interior compionents, the mounting may vary from application to application. Follow the steps in Tables 3-1 through 3-3. See Figure 3-1 for the location of connectors.

Step Action

1 Mount the ISG Interface Board in the chassis and secure it with the screws provided in the adapter kit. Be sure to insert all screws before tightening.

2 Disconnect the cable on the connector labelled ANT on DPX2, loosen the nut on the N Connector, and re-move the cable

3 Attach the Ethernet cable 700-24888-150 to the inboard connector on the ISG Interface Board, and extend the RJ-45 end of the cable through the repeater chassis.

4 Attach the ribbon connector to the ISG Interface Board and to the BSC PCBA already mounted in the repeat-er.

1 Mount the ISG Interface Board in the chassis and secure it with the screws provided in the adapter kit. Be sure to insert all screws before tightening.

2 Disconnect the cable on the connector labelled ANT on DPX2, loosen the nut on the N Connector, and re-move the cable

3 Attach cable VE007 82/1 to the ANT connector on the ISG Interface Board Mezzanine Board DCC, and to the N connector on the repeater chassis.

4 .Attach cable VE001 11/1 to the RF Connector and the DCC on the ISG Mezzanine Board.

5 Attach cable VE007 02/12 to the DPX connector on the ISG Mezzanine Board and to the ANT connector on DPX2.

6 Attach the ribbon connector to the ISG Interface Board and to the BSC PCBA already mounted in the re-peater.

Due to many different configurations for the AR Repeater interior components, the mounting may vary from application to application. Follow the steps in Tables 3-4 through 3-6. See Figure 3-2 for the location of connectors.

1 Attach the ISG Board battery back-up connector to P101 on the ISG Board.

2 Attach cable 700-2488-150 to the Site LAN connector on the ISG Board and the Site LAN connector on the RJ-45 Connector Adapter.

3 Attach cable 700-2488-150 to the Local LAN connector on the ISG Board and the Local LAN connector on the RJ-45 Connector Adapter.

4 Mount the ISG Interface Board in the chassis plate and secure it with the six screws provided in the adapter kit. Be sure to insert all screws before tightening. Tighten screws to 0.8 - 1.0 Nm (7.0 - 8.8 in-lbs)

5Attach ribbon cable 700-14514-401 to the P130 connector on the ISG Board and the RCI board on the re-peater chassis. Position the cable as shown in Figure 3-3so that the R2R and WLI LEDs are not covered. See Figure 3-5.

6 Attach an Ethernet cable to the inboard connector (Site LAN) on the ISG Interface Board, and to the outboard connector (Site LAN) on the RJ-45 Connector Adapter.

1 Follow steps 1—5 in Table 3-4 above.

2 Install the Cable Inlet as shown in Figure 3-4.

3 Install the Directional Coupler (DC) Unit on the right side of the power supply, and secure it to the repeater chassis with with two M4X14 screws.

4 Attach cable VE007 83/3 to the cable inlet and to the ANT terminal on the DC Unit.

5 Attach cable VE007 10/1 to the P05 connector on the ISG Interface Board Mezzanine Board, and to the MS-20 connector on the DC Unit. Tighten to 7 Nm (61.9 in-lbs)

6 Attach a cable from the DPX terminal on the DC Unit to the ANT terminal on the repeater’s duplexer com-ponent.

7 Attach an antenna cable to the connector on the bottom of the repeater and to a suitable antenna at the site.

OCM Installation

Installation KitUse the parts from the appropriate adapter kit to install the ISG Interface Board into the OCM.

Installation procedureThe ISG Interface Board is typically installed beside the Fiber Optic Unit (FOU). Due to many differentconfigurations for the OCM interior components, the mounting may vary from application to application. Followthe steps in Tables 3-7 and 3-8. See Figure 3-8 and 3-9 for the location of connectors.

Step Action

1 Loosen, remove, and retain the two screws on each side of the top cover, as well as the screw at the back of the cover.

2 Lift the cover straight up from the OCM chassis.

3 On the bottom of the OCM, remove the two screws that secure the connector mounting plate to the OCM chassis. See Figure 3-7

4Pull the bottom of the connector mounting plate away from the OCM front panel and slide the plate away from the slot.NOTE: Before disconnecting cables, remove and discard the wire ties from the cable bundle.

5Disconnect the WLI 1 RJ-45 connector from the connector mounting plate by pushing up on the black clip on the front of the connector and pulling the connector away from the plate. Then remove the other end of the cable from the RCC board by pulling it straight up. Set the cable aside.

6Disconnect the Remote RJ-11 connector from the connector mounting plate by pushing up on the black clip on the front of the connector and pulling the connector away from the plate. Then remove the other end of the cable from the RCC board by pulling it straight up. Set the cable aside.

7 Disconnect the ribbon cable from the RCC board.

8 Loosen, remove, and discard the 6 screws that secure the RCC board to the OCM chassis, remove the RCC board from the OCM, and set it aside.

9 Position the ISG Interface Board in place of the RCC Board, then secure it to the OCM chassis with the six screws provided in the adapter kit.

10Attach one of the cables (700-24888-550) to the Site LAN port (labeled SK-2 on the ISG Board) and attach the RJ-45 end of the cable to the connector mounting plate in the middle position. Note that this connector replaces the WLI 1 connector.

11Attach the other 700-24888-550 cable to the Local LAN port (labeled SK-3 on the ISG Board) and attach the RJ-45 end of the cable to the remaining position on the connector mounting plate (in place of the Remote connector).

12 Tilt the front of the connector mounting plate forward, and place it underneath the LED wires, then slip the plate back into the slot on the OCM front panel.

13 On the bottom of the OCM, insert and tighten the two screws that secure the connector mounting plate to the OCM chassis.

14 On the front panel of the OCM, use the “Site LAN” label from the adapter kit to cover the WLI 1 connector label.

15 On the front panel of the OCM, use the “Local LAN” label from the adapter kit to cover the Remote connector label.

16 Attach the ribbon cable from the FON board adjacent to the ISG Board .NOTE: Do not connect the backup battery plug to the receptacle on the ISG Board.

NOTE: The Site LAN Connector replaces the WLI1 port on the front of the OCM.

17 Set the power switch on the front of the OCM to the on position.

18 Configure the software for the ISG Interface Board. See the ISG Interface Board Software Configuration manual (044-05321) for details.

19 After configuring the software, connect the backup battery plug to the receptacle on the ISG Board.

20 Reinstall the OCM cover, and tighten the three screws to secure the cover.

Step Action

1 Follow steps 1 through 16 in Table 3-7.

2 Connect the antenna wire to the RF Terminal on the ISG Board and to the ANT terminal hole on the OCM front panel.

3 Secure the connector to the panel front with the hardware supplied.

4 Set the power switch on the front of the OCM to the on position.

5 Configure the software for the ISG Interface Board. See the ISG Interface Board Software Configuration manual (044-05321) for details.

6 After configuring the software, connect the backup battery plug to the receptacle on the ISG Board.

7 Reinstall the OCM cover, and tighten the three screws to secure the cover.

Chapter 4 Maintenance

IntroductionThis chapter contains periodic maintenance and performance test procedures for the ISG Interface Board.

Periodic MaintenancePeriodic maintenance requirements are minimal for the ISG Interface Board. Make sure cables are secure and no dust has built up inside the repeater and on the board.

TroubleshootingThe following paragraphs contain a list of problems that could occur and a few suggested actions that can correct the problem. If the suggested corrective action does not eliminate the problem, please contact your Powerwave field representative or the factory for further instructions.

Replacement Procedure ISG Interface Board

Replacement ProcedureThe ISG Interface Board can be replaced in the field on site by a qualified technician with experience maintaining RF power amplifiers or similar equipment:

To replace the ISG Interface Board, follow the steps in Table 4-2.

1 Turn off power to the repeater or OCM that houses the ISG Interface Board..

2 Starting with the ribbon connector, carefully disconnect all cables and connectors.

3 Remove the screws that attach the ISG Interface Board to the mounting plate and remove the Board from the repeater or OCM. Label all cables and connectiors for easy replace-ment.

4 Replace the ISG Interface Board in reverse order of removal.
