MATTHEWSIn her first game back af-

ter suffering a concussion, Weddington High forward Lee Page scored an unas-sisted goal to lift her team to a 1-0 home win over Porter Ridge in a highly-anticipated Southern Carolina Confer-ence match on Thursday.

Weddington, ranked sixth in the 3A state poll by euro-sportscoreboard.com, im-proved to 7-1 in the SCC and 14-2-1 overall.

Page, who will be playing collegiate soccer for Wake

Forrest in the fall, netted her 11th goal of the season with seven minutes remaining in regulation.

“I kind of just got lucky and dribbled through them and just got off a shot,” said Page.

Just minutes after Page put the Warriors on the board, she gave her team quite the scare due to a cramp in her calf.

“This is by far the best game they’ve played this sea-son,” Weddington coach Pow-ell Williams said. “I think they are all finally coming around and playing better

with Lee coming back.”Williams praised the ef-

fort of senior Nicole Costa - a UNC Wilmington signee who has also has battled injuries this season.

“She got into the rhythm as well as a number of other play-ers,” Williams said. of Costa. “Karly Highet and Bekah Mas-si also both played great.”

Weddington has three regular-season games left, including a matchup with undefeated Marvin Ridge in their final game of the sea-son on May 7. The Mavs won the first meeting 4-0.

MArvinWith an outright conference champion-

ship on the line, Porter Ridge High scored four runs in the first inning and cruised to an 8-1 road win over Marvin Ridge’s softball team on Thursday.

The Pirates completed a perfect 10-0 run through the Southern Carolina Con-ference with the win over the Mavericks, who finish 8-2 in the league.

Both teams were making contact — there were only five strikeouts com-bined.

The Mavericks hurt themselves with four errors in the first, which was half as many as PR had for the game.

Haley Secrest got the Pirates off to a good start with an infield single in the first. She scored from first on a bunt single by Courtney Price, aided by a two-base throwing error.

Davis walked and Kayla Dresser brought Price home on a RBI error. With two outs, Anna Wilson brought home Davis with an infield single and Dresser scored on an error.

The Mavericks plated their only run in the bottom of the first inning, with Alexis Marko scoring on Erin Kayton’s double to center field. It was the only extra base hit for the Mavericks in the game.

The Pirates added two runs in the sec-ond inning with Secrest and Price scor-ing on a base hit up the middle by Davis.

The third inning went scoreless but the Pirates added a seventh run in the fourth when Davis scored on a RBI single by Jes-sica Stewart.

WHO’S NEWSJunior will drive replica of dad’s car

MOORESVILLE (AP) — Dale Earnhardt Jr. will drive a replica of his father’s No. 3 Wrangler Chevrolet in the

Nationwide Series race at Daytona in July.

The car unveil-ing was done Thursday at JR Motorsports on what would have been the seven-time NASCAR champion’s 59th birthday. He was

killed in a 2001 accident at Daytona, and his number has not been used in the Sprint Cup Series since.

Earnhardt Jr. drove the No. 3 twice in 2002 in NASCAR’s second-tier series, and Richard Childress, who controls the number, is allowing his grandson, Austin, to use it in the Truck Series this season.

“This was an idea that came up as a way to pay tribute to my dad,” Earnhardt Jr. said. “The Wrangler car is definitely in the top-10 of coolest cars that have ever been on the race track. A lot of people identify with it, and I can’t think of a better way to honor my dad and celebrate his induction into the NASCAR Hall of Fame than to bring the Wrangler colors back with the No. 3 on the side.”

Earnhardt will be inducted as part of the inaugural Hall of Fame class on May 23.

CHARLOTTE (AP) — Ti-ger Woods delivered a few memorable shots of his own Thursday at Quail Hollow on a pleasant day that produced birdies and eagles and plenty of excitement.

It’s just not what he had in mind.

“I was struggling so bad out there, just trying to piece to-gether a round to keep myself in the tournament,” Woods said.

He hit a tee shot into the wa-ter on the par-3 17th that pro-duced little reaction except to hold out his hand for another ball. He hit his next tee shot into the water and had to scramble for bogey. And he wound up with a 2-over 74 that left him nine shots behind Bo Van Pelt and ended his streak of 21 straight rounds at par or better.

“I hit a bunch of balls left, I hit a bunch of balls right, hit a few down the middle,” Woods said. “And that was about it.”

For everyone else — Mas-ters champion Phil Mickelson included with his 70 — there was so much more.

Mickelson had a severe stomach ailment that forced him to withdraw from the pro-am Wednesday, and he started

feeling it when he climbed the steep hill to the 15th green. He two-putted for birdie to reach 4 under for his round, only to three-putt from the fringe on the 17th and made another bogey from the trees on the 18th.

“I may have run out of en-ergy there toward the end, but I hit some good shots and was able to shoot a decent round,” Mickelson said.

Van Pelt is using an old putter that he had refurbished, and he already got strong results in Hilton Head two weeks ago with a tie for third, his best finish of the year. The opening round of the Quail Hollow Champion-ship was even better, as Van Pelt made birdie on all the par 5s and made it through the tough closing stretch with all pars.

Kenny Perry shot a 66 and didn’t let the finish ruin his day. After a flawless shot into 8 feet for eagle on the par-5 sev-enth, he hit his drive 35 yards short of the green on the par-4 eighth and had an open angle at the pin. But he didn’t com-mit to the delicate wedge, and

the ball rolled back to his feet. That turned potential birdie — and the outright lead — into a bogey.

“One little blunder,” Perry said. “But it was a fun round of golf. It’s been a long time since I’ve played like that.”

Camilo Villegas played bogey-free for a 67, while the

group at 68 featured a collection of players that included former U.S. Open champion Geoff Ogilvy, Monday qualifier Billy Mayfair and Brad Faxon, who has made only two cuts this year while spend-ing time working for NBC Sports.

“When you start trending like I did with a 74th-place finish last week, you could see this coming,” Faxon said, laughing.

Woods hasn’t played enough to detect any trends, although this would count as a step backward with his golf. He was coming off a tie for fourth in the Masters, his first competition in five months, in which he broke par all four rounds for the first time at Augusta National.

In his second tournament since his hiatus from being

caught in a web of infidelity — the first one with tickets available to the general pub-lic — the applause was loud and genuine, with nothing re-motely close to heckling.

Trouble was, Woods didn’t give thousands of fans who braved chilly morning weath-er much to applaud.

There was that opening birdie on the par-5 10th. There also were the two shots into the water, four shots into or close to the trees, and the wrong club on his last hole that sent the ball well over the ninth green for one last bogey.

It was his highest opening round at a regular PGA Tour event since he shot 75 at The Players Championship three years ago. Woods kept his cool on the golf course, but he was in no mood to find a fix when he was done with his round.

“I’m not going to the range today,” he said. “Hell with it.”

It was a wasted opportunity, and Woods knew it. Quail Hol-low is among the top courses on the PGA Tour — most players believe it’s as close as any to a major championship — yet there was little defense under warm sunshine and very little wind.

SAN ANTONIO (AP) — The Spurs moved on, and Dallas is done early again.

Manu Ginobili scored 26 points and San Antonio survived blowing a 22-point lead to beat the Mavericks 97-87 in Game 6 on Thursday night, handing Dirk Nowitzki and second-seeded Dal-las another first-round exit.

The Spurs got payback after the Mavs eliminated them a year ago, and will play either Phoenix or Portland in the

Western Conference semifinals.“For us there was no tomorrow,” Gi-

nobili said after the Spurs finished off the Mavs in front of a raucous home crowd and avoided going back to Dallas for a Game 7.

Nowitzki nearly carried the Mavs to an unbelievable comeback, getting 25 of his 33 points in a remarkable sec-ond half. But the Mavs still stumbled to their third first-round exit in the last four years.

George Hill had 21 points for the Spurs, who are coming off their worst regular season in the Tim Duncan era — making this series all the more im-pressive.

This one is especially tough for team owner Mark Cuban, who plunked down an extra $30 million for a deal at the trade deadline that brought Caron But-ler from Washington.

Butler scored 25 points and rookie Ro-drigue Beaubois had 16 points.

Johnson smooths out hard feelings with GordonPHILADELPHIA (AP) —

Four-time defending NASCAR champion Jimmie Johnson says team owner Rick Hendrick told him and teammate Jeff Gordon not to let their bubbling feud start “breaking apart the orga-nization.”

Johnson, Gordon and Hen-drick spoke together on the phone this week to smooth over a rough patch in the relation-ship between the drivers. The pair of four-time Cup champi-ons and Hendrick Motorsports teammates tangled on the track in successive weeks, leading Gordon to lash out at Johnson after Sunday’s race at Tallade-ga Superspeedway.

Johnson said Hendrick un-derstood they are competitive drivers who just want to win. But Hendrick didn’t want the rivalry to split apart the race teams that work so closely together.

Johnson said Hendrick told him, “You guys need to voice your opinions, handle things on the track as you see fit, but let’s not let this carry on too far and affect the race shop.”

Johnson made a mistake

that ultimately led to Gordon’s wreck at Talla-dega. That came a week after the two had a run-in at Texas Mo-tor Speedway.

Johnson says he was sur-prised that Gor-don, also a four-

time Cup champion, lashed out at him on national TV after Sun-day’s race. He says his relation-ship with Gordon has changed over the years. They were close friends who “were running hard, having a blast” as single guys, but are now more likely

as married family men to dis-cuss diapers and strollers.

In Philadelphia on Thursday to promote the May 16 Sprint Cup race at Dover Internation-al Speedway, Johnson said he didn’t mind having Gordon as his rival.

“The tension at times, it makes you dig in deeper and fighter harder and work hard-er,” he said. “The more com-petitive we are, as a team, the better we’re going to make our organization. We’ve got four awesome drivers.”

Johnson already took the blame for a mistake that caused Gordon to crash at Talladega. Gordon, who drove his dam-

aged car to a 22nd-place finish, was furious with his teammate after the race.

“The 48 is testing my pa-tience, I can tell you that,” Gor-don said Sunday at Talladega. “It takes a lot to make me mad. ... I don’t know what it is with me and him right now.”

Johnson said that after their conversation, he realized Gordon was speaking out of frustration.

“He’s had such a good year go-ing. A few victories have slipped through his fingers, wrecked cars late in the race,” Johnson said. “I was like the straw that broke the camel’s back. When the microphone was there, it was easy just to go.”

Freese has six RBI as Cards deal Braves ninth straight lossST. LOUIS (AP) — David

Freese waited so long for his first home run, St. Louis Cardi-nals pitchers were teasing him.

That business is out of the way after the rookie’s six-RBI day fueled a 10-4 victory Thurs-day that sent the Atlanta Braves skidding to their ninth straight loss.

“I put my two cents in,” Freese said. “Obviously, getting that first homer is always the toughest. I was just trying not to worry about it.”

The Braves wrapped up an 0-7 trip, their first winless swing of seven or more games since Sep-tember 1949 when the franchise was located in Boston and went 0-8 in Philadelphia and Brook-

lyn.“I don’t think I’ve ever been

on one like this,” manager Bob-by Cox said. “Probably have, but it’s not going to be in our memo-ry, that’s for sure.

“It was a lousy trip. It’s been a horrible experience to endure.”

Adam Wainwright (4-1) worked six solid innings, keep-ing the ball down for the most part to mitigate high swirling winds, as the Cardinals com-pleted a four-game sweep. With Albert Pujols getting his first day off, St. Louis still won its fifth in a row and swept Atlanta for the first time since 1993.

“It’s like winning a double-header, right?” manager Tony La Russa said. “Albert gets his

rest and it’s a nice lineup we put out there.”

Jair Jurrjens (0-3) strained his left hamstring and lasted only one inning for Atlanta, although he was hopeful he wouldn’t miss a turn in the rotation. Jurrjens said the hamstring bothered him during warmups.

“I was cautious about it, I tried not to put so much pressure on it,” Jurrjens said. “I tried to all-arm it and it wasn’t working so well.”

The Braves lost 10 straight in 2006— they can match skid Fri-day night at home against Hous-ton.

“It’s probably the worst road trip ever,” Eric Hinske said. “You can’t blame it on anything.

Maybe it’s good we’re doing this in April and not in September.”

The Braves have totaled 17 runs during their slump. Rookie Jason Heyward returned af-ter one game on the bench and had two hits, including the first homer allowed by Cardinals pitching in 10 games at home this season.

Wainwright, a first-round pick of the Braves in 2000, is 5-0 with a 2.00 ERA against Atlanta in eight games. Yadier Molina helped out with two hits and two RBIs and Colby Rasmus scored four times.

Freese’s day was the biggest by a Cardinals rookie since at least 1957, when rookie qualifica-tions were established, the Elias

Sports Bureau said. Freese has eight RBIs the last two games, getting two RBIs Wednesday on his 27th birthday, and 14 on the season.

The Cardinals acquired Freese from San Diego for Jim Edmonds after 2007 and he won the third base job this spring.

Freese hit a three-run homer off the right-field foul pole with two outs in the first off Jurrjens, his first of the year and the first of his career at Busch Stadium. Freese added a three-run double off Jesse Chavez in the fifth.

“That’s why I’m here, to drive in runs and score runs,” Freese said. “They put me out there to do a job and that’s what I’ve got to keep thinking.”

Porter Ridge kept Wedding-ton’s offensive scoreless during the first half, thanks in part to freshman goal keeper Megan Mandanski.

“I can’t believe she’s just a freshman,” Page said of Man-danski. “She’s really good and going to be even better.”

Shot after shot, Mandanski refused to let a ball past her, finishing with 19 saves on 20 shots.

Williams was also impressed with Mandanski’s prowess be-tween the pipes.

“She’s incredible and we’re lucky we got by her what we did,” Williams said.

Porter Ridge dropped to 3-4 in the SCC and 12-5-3 overall.

“(Mandanski) has been a wonderful surprise all season and I don’t know where we’d be without her,” Porter Ridge coach Ron Ladimir said. “This was a good game against two really good games and (Page) had a good turn against us and there’s nothing you can do about that.”

Ladimir said he was im-pressed with his team’s stingy defensive effort against such a senior-laden squad.

“We’ve been playing much more defensive all year,” Ladi-mir said. “The teams we’ve played have had really good ball control and you can run and chase them or play smart about it and play as a unit and don’t give up a lot of opportunities and that’s what we do.”

guard Tyreke Evans beat out Golden State’s Stephen Curry and Milwaukee’s Brandon Jennings to win the NBA Rookie of the Year award.

Evans received the honor Thursday after becom-ing the fourth rookie ever to average at least 20 points, five rebounds and five assists per game. He joined an illustrious club that includes Oscar Rob-ertson, Michael Jordan and LeBron James.

Evans was the fourth pick in last year’s NBA draft after spending one season at Memphis. He led all rookies in scoring at 20.1 points per game, was sec-ond in assists at 5.8 per game and fifth in rebounds at 5.3. Evans is the first Sacramento player ever to win the award.

As a first-year baseball program without a senior class, few could have expected the success Cuthbertson High has enjoyed in 2010. The Cavaliers head into next week’s Rocky River Confer-ence tournament with an overall record of 18-3 after Thursday’s 6-3 win at Marvin Ridge. Pic-tured is Cuthbertson’s Brandon Fallick (12) avoiding the tag of Marvin Ridge catcher Byron Haag during a six-run inning second inning. Fallick is one of four freshmen who started the game.

PiratesContinued from Page 1B

The Pirates scored their final run in the sixth inning with Davis coming home on a wild pitch.

Cassidy Crump crossed the plate three times as the cour-tesy runner for Davis, who finished 3-for-3 with two RBI and a walk.

“I’m very excited for them, proud of them,” said Porter Ridge coach Lael Rorie. “They have worked very hard to get here and they deserve it. I couldn’t be happier. They executed in every situation. They hit the ball well and the defense was on point.”

Secrest went 2-for-5 with two runs; Price was 3-for4 with a double and two runs; Stewart went 2-for-4 with an RBI; Wilson went 3-for-4 with a RBI and Whitney Haywood was 2-for-4.

Claudia Spinelli went 1-for-3, and Madison Arroyo 1-for-2 for the Mavs.

Davis, a sophomore who has committed to Auburn, gave up just four hits and no walks while Caitlin Kurtz took the loss, giving up 14 hits and walking three batters.

The Pirates end the regu-lar season with a 17-1 record while the Mavericks have three non-conference games to end the season.

A: NASCAR seemed to get it right on this one. Last fallat Talladega, drivers were told in the drivers meeting thatthere would be punishment for aggressive driving, andlong stretches of the race were considered by many to beboring compared to previous Talladega events.

On Sunday at Talladega, there were no threats of pun-ishment in the drivers meeting, leaving the drivers topolice matters themselves. By most accounts they did acommendable job.

And the spoiler seemed to allow trailing drivers to closethe gap on those ahead of them, and it even seemed toplay a role in Kevin Harvick’s last-lap pass of JamieMcMurray for the win in the Aaron’s 499.

And it kept spinning cars from flying through the air, asthey tended to do with the wing on the back.

“I think it was very typical Talladega,” Harvick said. “Ithink there was a lot of pushing and shoving, two- andthree-wide.

“The spoiler made it so you could pull back up on some-body if you made a mistake. You just didn’t want to be thevery last car. It was a very interesting day and it playedout perfect for us.’’

Even in defeat, McMurray seemed to like the way therace played out.

“It was actually a lot of fun out there,” he said. “We hadsuch a good rules package with the wing here, you didn’tknow how this was going to work. They did a really goodjob of picking the blade and the right [spoiler] and madethe cars racy.’’

Still, McMurray said both he and Harvick played it safefor the majority of the race.

“Well, we raced really smart,” he said. “We rode aroundtoward the rear. Kevin and I actually rode together all dayback there. I think everybody in the back of their headsthought that with the wing and the plate and everythingthat there were a lot of unknowns and that we were goingto suck up too quick, because the cars did, they sucked upreally well.

“We saw Ryan Newman get wrecked in practice, andthat was practice. I really thought in the first 40 laps wewould have a wreck like that but everybody did a reallygood job.”

Sixth-finishing David Ragan agreed that the racing wasgood, at least from the driver’s seat. “Certainly, the carsdrive really well. I think NASCAR made the right decisionon allowing guys to push a little bit more and be a littlemore aggressive.

“I think it was a pretty clean race, except for maybe thelast 10-15 laps, and that’s just from everybody losing a lit-tle bit of patience.”

The big question remaining after theannouncement that Shell/Pennzoil is moving toPenske Racing and driver Kurt Busch, is whatwill happen with Kevin Harvick, who has beencarrying the Shell colors on his No. 29 Chevroletat Richard Childress Racing.

Harvick, who broke a 125-race losing streakwith a win at Talladega on Sunday, is in the lastyear of his contract with RCR. There’s been spec-ulation on the Internet that he’s not on the bestof terms with the people at RCR.

Harvick disputed those reports at Friday’spress appearance at Talladega Superspeedway.

“Richard Childress and myself have a greatrelationship, and we’ve been talking about a lotof things for several months,” Harvick said. “It’snot any different than what we would normallydo at this particular time.

“Cars are running well, everybody is communi-cating well, and I don’t know what else to sayother than Richard and I have had many, many, many, many, many, many, many conversationsover the last several months.

“Where all that leads — it’s right now, I’mdriving the 29 car and we’ll see … I knowRichard and I have had a lot of conversationsover the last three months.”

Harvick’s crew chief Gil Martin said the team’sTalladega win should help in attracting a newprimary backer.

“I hate that Shell/Pennzoil is leaving, but thefact of the matter is we’ve got a top-notch team,so we’re looking for somebody to come on boardand start the next chapter at RCR with them,”Martin said.

It’s a remarkably similar scenario to the earlypart of the 2006 season, when Harvick was nego-tiating an extension with RCR and many in thesport felt he’d move elsewhere.

Instead he stayed and won five races thatyear, a career best and a big chunk of his 11career Cup victories.

Delayed race worth the waitJust when it looked as if Jamie McMurray

and Kevin Harvick would do an encore perform-ance of their finish in Sunday’s Cup race atTalladega Superspeedway, chaos erupted on thetrack. The two ran one-two on the white-flag lapof the rain-delayed Nationwide race beforeMcMurray and Clint Bowyer collided, setting offa nasty multi-car crash that saw Dennis Setzer’sDodge sail into the catchfence.

Brad Keselowski, who wrecked late in theCup race, got last-minute medical approval torun the Nationwide race and sped past Harvickat the end to get the win. His carbon monoxidelevel was too high, and he had to be treated withoxygen.

His win came at the same track where hescored a surprise Cup win just a year ago.

Daytona to be repaved The problems with the track at Daytona

International Speedway during the Daytona500 have led to plans to completely repave thespeedway following the Coke Zero 400 in July.

Holes in the turns of the track during the 500caused lengthy delays during the sport’s pre-mier event and led to an evaluation of theentire 2.5-mile racing surface, and the results ofthat study led to the decision to repave. It’s onlythe second time the track, opened in 1959, hasbeen repaved, the first coming in 1978.

Track officials say all of the existing asphaltwill be removed down to the original 52-year-old lime rock base, but the repaving will be trueto the track’s original layout and geometry. Thework is set to be complete on Jan. 1, 2011, but itmeans the October motorcycle races, drivingexperiences and other events will be cancelled.

The magic seemed to have returned to TalladegaSuperspeedway on Sunday as a new rules pack-age – a spoiler instead of a wing and instructions

to the Sprint Cup boys to “have at it” – led to one of themost exciting Talladega races in years. And, while therewere some wrecks, there weren’t any cars flyingthrough the air or into the catchfence, as there havebeen in recent races at the huge Alabama speed plant. That wasn’t the case in the Nationwide race, however,as Dennis Setzer’s Dodge took a wild ride into the fence.

Sunday’s Aaron’s 499 featured an all-time Sprint Cuprecord for lead changes, 88, and different leaders, 29. Itsaw three tries at green-white-checkered-flag finishes,200 laps run instead of the advertised 188, a last-lappass for the win in the tri-oval, and another installmentin the growing feud between Jeff Gordon and hisHendrick motorsports teammate Jimmie Johnson.

Kevin Harvick wound up the winner, passing JamieMcMurray as the two approached the finish line for thefinal time. It was a classic pass made possible in part bythe change from the wing to the blade spoiler as theaerodynamic device on the rear decklids of the Cup cars.

McMurray led 23 of the final 24 laps and had the leadcoming down the homestretch when Harvick closed onhis bumper, causing McMurray to bobble momentarily.

Harvick then moved to his left and into the lead.It was Harvick’s first Cup win in 125 races, dating

back to the 2007 Daytona 500.Harvick’s crew chief Gil Martin described the winning

move as much like one from back in the day atTalladega.

“That was a tremendous pass just like the old days, like you would have seen Buddy Baker or CaleYarborough or anybody do here,” Martin said. “That wasa tremendous pass, and it was timed perfectly.”

Harvick and McMurray both said that with the aero-dynamics of the current car, once Harvick made hisfinal move, McMurray was a sitting duck.

“I was guarding against the outside,” McMurray said, explaining that he didn’t think there would be room forHarvick to pass him on the inside without making animproper crossing of the yellow line. “When [Harvick]went left it really loosened the car up. The car doingthe passing had the momentum.”

Felix Sabates, one of the owners of McMurray’s car, told reporters after the race that he believed Harvickdid cross the line, but NASCAR ruled otherwise.

Harvick said his successful pass was a matter ofperfect timing. “[McMurray] moved to the right, and I moved to left and that was it,” he said.“When you shoot past them it slows them down.It worked out absolutely perfect on the timing.”

McMurray said that once a driver makes amove like the one Harvick made, it’s impossi-ble to recover immediately.

“It’s like you pull a parachute in your car,”he said. “It literally feels like you lose threeor five miles an hour immediately.”

About the only person who seemedupset after the race was Jeff Gordon, whowas involved in a bumping incident withJohnson just prior to being swept up ina multi-car crash.

The two have had run-ins in sever-al recent races.

“The 48 [Johnson] is testing mypatience right now,” Gordon said.“It’s about reached its boilingpoint.”
