    MLC Requirements

    food and drinking water must be of appropriate quality, nutritional value and

    quantity that adequately covers the requirements of the ship and takes intoaccount the differing cultural and religious backgrounds. 

    Seafarers on board a ship shall be provided with food free of charge during the

    period of engagement. 

      ships’ cooks with responsibility for food preparation must be at least 18 years

    old and trained and qualified for their position on board ship.

    The master or a person designated by him shall carry out documented andfrequent inspections of: the supplies of food and drinking water and galley

    spaces and equipment.

    MLC Requirements

    • Seafarers on must be covered by adequate measures for the protection of their

    health and to have access to prompt and adequate medical care whilst working on

    board.

    This protection and care shall be provided at no cost to the seafarers.

     All crew members hold a valid medical certificate attesting that they are fit to perform theirduties at sea.

    a) RD 1696 / 2007 Annex III form, signed by a physician of SMI (*)

    b) Exceptions ( Regulation A1.2.8 and 9), vessels not calling at Spanish ports in periods longer than threemonths, will be considered as valid medical certificates:

    medical certificate issued in accordance with the requirements of the MLC 2006

    medical certificate issued in accordance with the requirements of the STCW 78 Convention as amended(section A - I / 9)

    (*) Substantial equivalent provision.

    (**)The validity of the medical certificates described in sub-paragraph b) shall expire at the time when the ship arrives at thenext port of call where the seafarer can obtain the certificate referred to in a)

    Crew list (galley staff identified, cook’s age).

    Evaluation of drinking water quality control means (supply, treatment, disinfection,

    drinking water on board system).

    Meal plans (menu) offered to the seafarers (including special diets: health problems,

    religious requirements and cultural practices).

    Records of the reserves of food and drinking water.

    Cleaning plan and maintenance of galley spaces and equipment ( kitchen, dinning

    rooms, storerooms, service areas)

    Refrigeration logs, temperature readings of cold rooms.

    Valid International Ship Sanitation exemption Certificate (correction of any deficiencies

    identified in previous reviews by the health authority).

    Proof of adequate training of the cook and galley staff in food hygiene, handling and

    storage of food.

    Certificate of disinfection and/or fumigation (vector control).
