TO BE able to diagnose hearing problems within the first few days of a baby being born makes a huge difference to their future quality of life.
This is according to Karen Halford, South East manager of a new hearing screening programme for babies in St Luke’s General Hospital.
The test is free of charge to parents of all babies born at the hospital and by home birth. Babies who do not have a clear response in one or both ears within a week of being born will get a full assessment at the Regional Diagnostic Audiology linic, Waterford Regional Hospital.
“The test is usually done beside the mother’s bed so it is not disruptive and
doesn’t hurt the baby,” explained Karen. One of the first babies to receive the
service in St Luke’s was one day old Ryan from Thurles. His mother, Carmel Fitzgibbon told The Reporter she was delighted to be offered the test. “I don’t have to worry about it now. It’s one more thing ticked off the list and has given me great peace of mind,” she said.
Welcoming the service, Dr Mary Francis, Senior Medical Officer/Community Health, HSE Carlow/Kilkenny, said: “In Ireland, one to two babies in every 1,000 are born with hearing loss in one or both ears. We are aiming to identify hearing impairment as soon as possible after birth, to give babies a better chance of developing speech and language skills and to make the most of social and emotional interaction from an early age.”
She said babies who spent time in a special baby care unit had a higher incidence of hearing loss and would also be tested.
“The rate of babies needing further referral will be relatively low and is estimated at about two to four percent of all babies tested. The referral does not necessarily mean that a baby will have a hearing loss, it could be due to other factors,” she said.
She added that the service had been very well received in other hospitals. “We hope it will be incorporated into the normal experience of having a baby in St Luke’s,” she said.
Dr Garry Courtney, Clinical Director, said he was delighted that the 2,100 babies born at the hospital each year would now be receiving the service.

IN ‘The Illumination’ by Kevin Brockmeier something strange is going on. All over the world, pain is manifesting itself as light. Cuts and bruises blaze and fl ash. Arthritic joints glow. Injured troops emit radiant white shards into the desert night. On the news, they’re calling it ‘The Illumination’.
As this breathtaking phenomenon takes hold, a private journal of love notes passes into the keeping of Carol Ann Page, a lonely hospital patient, and from there through the hands of fi ve other people. FILM 21 Jump StreetDirector Phil Lord, Chris Miller
Three genres of movies which recently have been running out
of ideas- the TV remake, the ‘bromance’ and teen comedy here are given a refreshing new spin. The fi lm follows two rookie cops who are sent to a special unit which takes young looking cops and places them undercover in high school. They are sent to break up a drug ring which is peddling a deadly new product which seems to have the eff ect of all other narcotics combined including over-dose. They are warned not to get expelled, party with alcohol or get involved romantically but it is not long before they have broken all these rules and then some. What really makes this fi lm so likeable is the two leads. Channing Tatum and Jonah Hill have a ball playing the jock and nerd who are trying to recapture their youth. What makes it really clever is that they overturn the audience’s expectations of this adolescent world
by making the cool kids ecological vegans who frown on homophobia and macho behaviour. By inverting the clichés this central conceit gives them lots of room for some great gags. Also there is a self-conscious streak running through the movie that makes it very enjoyable for fans of the original show especially a last minute cameo that really surprises.Although in the end it does give way to the usual barrage of high speed chases and gunfi ghts these are done with enough wit and panache that they are forgivable. Though the plotting is straight out of ‘Scooby Doo’ and the climax is the umpteenth time that the ending to ‘True Romance’ was nicked it is still enjoyable. The druggie scenes are particularly hilarious which is a diffi cult thing to pull off given that these are usually done with such a heavy hand . Much like ‘Starsky and Hutch’ and the recent ‘Muppets’ fl ick this re-imagines a forgotten franchise cleverly. So for a bit of comedic nonsense which succeeds through the charm of it’s characters and the smart set-up you could so a lot worse than taking a trip to ’21 Jump Street’. – DARRAGH BYRNE
