    Angelas Research on the Medical ProfessionAngela consulted a number of sources to determine the skills and qualities valued in the medical

    profession. Below are her sources and the qualities they listed.

    Bureau of Labor Statistics

    According to the Occupational Outlook Handbook, U.S. Department of Labor Bureau of Labor

    Statistics:

    People who wish to become physicians must have a desire to serve patients, be self-

    motivated, and be able to survive the pressures and long hours of medical education and

    practice. Physicians also must have a good bedside manner, emotional stability, and theability to make decisions in emergencies. Prospective physicians must be willing to study

    throughout their career to keep up with medical advances.

    The American Association of Medical Colleges (AAMC)

    According to the Essential Qualities of 21st Century Physicians Learning Objectives for Medical

    Student Education: Guidelines for Medical Schools, physicians must be:

    Knowledgeable:abletounderstandandapplythescienticbasisofmedicine

    Skillfulin:providingcarebasedonevidenceofeffectiveness Dutiful:ableandobligatedtocollaboratewithotherhealthcare

    The ACGME has developed a competency-based model for training residents which includes six domains

    of clinical competence:
