Balma has gone from designing office furniture to thinking holistically about business space design. However, we always keep in mind we create for people. Therefore, we place a human being and his work style right in the centre of our activities. A well-designed office space stimulates creativity and facilitates more productive teamwork. We do know that – after all, we are a group of passionate professionals ourselves.

Our innovative approach towards designing business space has gained recognition and won several awards. One of them is the prestigious RED DOT DESIGN AWARD, for H2 tables designed by Piotr Kuchciński, one of Poland’ most acknowledged designers. We are very proud of it. Balma mission is to design such offices.

At Balma we view office design as a whole. Thus, we do not limit ourselves to furniture, but we create room for plants and accessories in every interior we design. Plants have a positive influence on us and our environment, which was confirmed by the Clean Air Study led by the (NASA). The study proved that a few plants are enough to significantly improve indoor air quality. Furthermore, a University of Michigan study found that thanks to plants, we can improve our concentration and increase memory retention even by 20 %.

In our projects we often choose furniture made from natural materials. According to neuropsychologists, organic shapes and natural colours have a positive effect on the human brain. It is worth noting that apart from advanced technology, in modern offices there should also appear some visible elements coming from the world of nature.

We always adjust space to people. As a result, we also carry out bespoke orders and work on non-standard projects. If the situation calls for it, and the already existing solutions are not efficient enough – we offer

completely new projects/designs. Since each company is different, we need to focus on the way it operates. Listening to the needs of our Clients leads to some incredible discoveries and results in unique projects. At Balma there is one thing that unites us, irrespective of the position taken, which is passion. That makes our people believe that whatever seems impossible is possible.

If exposed to excess noise, people can become nervous and even fall sick. As a result, their productivity drops down and it gets difficult to communicate with others. Consequently, the open-space office format, although undoubtedly enjoying many advantages, could also be a potential nuisance. At Balma we always try to protect employees from harmful noise.

When designing interiors, we use sound-attenuating materials. We introduce mobile noise screens, fabric door padding or acoustic shutters for office cabinets. We recommend desktop dividing screens to people who sit opposite each other and moveable screens, which make it possible to adjust the space to one’s own needs. We make use of acoustic ceiling panels and the so-called “green walls”, made of plants. A good solution for an open-space office can also be “phone booths”, “quiet rooms” or some special pieces of furniture that can create acoustic niche, like a balloon chair.

Among the materials we use there is Corian, sound-absorbing fabrics and natural veneers. As we pick our materials very carefully, the furniture made by Balma is not only beautiful, but also durable and can be enjoyed for years.

The amount of light our organism absorbs has a huge impact on the way we feel. At the same time, it affects our productivity. This is why, lighting in Balma projects plays an enormous role.

The colour of the light as well as its intensity are vital. By controlling that, we are able to influence the level of fatigue experienced. It is especially important during winter months, when the access to natural light is limited.

The lighting design is very individualised and depends on the architecture of the building in which a given company is located. Shade, tiny windows or no windows at all – all these factors should determine the approach towards lighting. office as a waiting-room, when long hours are spent away from home. People are getting more and more aware that the surrounding environment does affect them and the way they feel.

How do our assumptions work in practice? The Agency MINIMA ADVERTISING PEOPLE has realised how much can change if you decorate your workplace with plants. It turned out that the plants contributed to the aesthetics of their office, higher quality of work and a more friendly atmosphere. Before introducing plants, the décor was rather harsh, cold, even unpleasant.

Now the agency has changed beyond recognition! Not only visually, but you can feel the big difference even in the moods of the people working there. They are all very happy now with the introduced changes and they admit that because of plants their work has become much more pleasant.
