// Increasing the permeability of the site was identified as a major design criteria, in order to determine the underlying issues within the current configuration and assess whether the redesign actually increased permeability it was necessary to analyse the site looking at two major factors - traffic intensity and capacity of corridors.
From the figures above it is apparent that the current configuration of the Union Lawn causes major bottlenecks with respect to in-and-outbound traffic from the Redmond Barry and Architecture buildings. The fence and hedge which run along the northern boundary of the space act as a barrier, effectively pushing the majority of the foot traffic to the footpath beyond.
This causes large volumes of foot traffic (Redmond Barry has a capacity of 1010 people alone) to be funnelled into quite narrow spaces. It is proposed that with the removal of all the obstructions which frame the Union Lawn, permeability would be greatly improved.
