Youneedtounderstandseveralthingsabouttheitemsonthisrecording.Firstly,thetrackswere created tomatch thewritten scriptwhich could often change before recording.Secondly,atthattimewedidnotseetheeditedtapesinadvance,solongertrackssuchasdoorsandrisinghumswereoftencreatedtobefadedupordownasrequiredinthestudiooratadub.Thirdly,thetechnologyatourdisposalwasextremelylimited:nomultitracktapemachines,computers,samplersorevensynthesisers.

ForthisstoryImainlyusedthe“CrystalPalace”,socalledbecauseitscasewasmadeofclearPerspexwhichexposeditsworkings.Thismachine,createdbyourengineerDaveYoung,couldmechanicallysample16inputsandcombinethemintoasingleoutputin4prearrangedpatterns.Theprogressionof thepatternswasdeliberately slow tocreatetextures of sound. Iwas verymuch interested in exploring changing aural textures intrackssuchas“TheLearningHall”and“KrotonTheme”.

Fromitsverybeginningsin1963,innovativesoundscoresaccompaniedBBCTelevision’sSaturdaynightsciencefictionadventure,DoctorWho.Generally,themusicwasprovidedby contracted freelance composers or - when fundswere tight - from “stock”musiclibraries, whilst the “Special Sound” (what we might now call “Sound Design”) wasproducedbyBrianHodgsonat theBBCRadiophonicWorkshop.Occasionally,budgetsweresuchthatnooriginalmusiccouldbeaffordedatall,andonthoseoccasionsBrian’ssoundexpandeditsroletofillbothfunctions.TheKrotonswasonesuchstory.Sowhilesomeofthesesoundsarepurelyatmospheric,othersaredeliberatelycreatedtobemoremusicallyevocative.Asever,theRadiophonicWorkshop’sengineersandcomposersweredevelopingnewtechniquesandinventingnewdevicestoenablethecreationofthesoundsheardhere.
