6 Choose the correct option for each sentence.

My English teacher is great! She lived in the UK for a year and she often speaks to us 1) on/about life

there. She always speaks 2) to/about us in English and that really helps us too. We do lots of interesting

things in class – sometimes we 3) translate/listen English pop songs. We do the easy bits and our

teacher 4) explains/means the difficult bits to us. Sometimes our teacher invites her English-speaking

friends into our class to talk 5) to/at us about different things. We can’t always 6) understand/hear

everything they say but we enjoy it anyway. Last year she invited a Scottish friend to the classroom –

he 7) pronounced/meant words in a very interesting way! I think there are a lot of English words which

are difficult to 8) say/speak. Our teacher often asks us to listen and 9) repeat/understand. I think it’s

really useful to 10) speak/say a foreign language because then you can talk 11) to/about people in their

own language.

Reading

How languages can change your life! Only a year ago, Roxana Trandafir wasn’t keen on school. ‘I was terrible at maths and bad at science. I wasn’t interested in sport either. Also I was very shy and didn’t have many friends. My family were worried about me because I didn’t want to go to school in the morning.

Then one day something changed. Roxana was coming out of school when she saw an advert for an evening class in Spanish. ‘Why not, I thought. I was bored and didn’t have anything else to do.’

On the first night of the class, Roxana didn’t feel very confident. When she walked into the Spanish class, her classmates were talking and laughing. ‘They all looked very clever and had lots to say,’ Roxana says. ‘I just wanted to go home.’

Roxana’s feelings soon changed. Her Spanish teacher was very lively and really good at explaining the new language. Roxana quickly learnt to pronounce Spanish words. A week later she could repeat short sentences in Spanish. Now she can understand her teacher when she speaks in Spanish. ‘This summer my mum and dad took me to Spain. It was great – I could translate the menu for my parents and I could tell my parents what people were saying to us. For the first time in my life I felt like I was good at something!’

Roxana thinks she was lucky to see the advert for the class. ‘Now I feel more confident in school because I know there’s something I’m good at. I can speak to people from other countries too! I learn Spanish every day and I’m learning French now, too.’

11 Are the sentences (1–11) true (T) or false (F)?

1 Roxana didn’t like school. T

2 Her family thought she was very happy at school. ____

3 Roxana’s friend told her about the Spanish evening class. ____

4 Roxana went to the class because she was interested in languages. ____

5 Roxana was very excited about meeting her new classmates. ____

6 Roxana felt nervous at the beginning of her first Spanish class. ____

7 Roxana had a very good Spanish teacher. ____

8 Roxana’s mum and dad can both speak Spanish well. ____

9 Roxana’s parents took her to Spain on holiday. ____

10 Roxana is happy she saw the advert for the Spanish class. ____

11 Roxana is learning Spanish and French now. ____
