She has a presentation this afternoon and needs to make 100 copies of her handout. She’s having problems with the copier and asks the receptionist, Linda, to help her. Jenna: Excuse me, Linda? Do you have a sec? Linda: Sure. What’s up? Jenna: Well, I was just in the middle of making copies for my presentation this afternoon and I think the copier is broken. Can you help me? Linda: Sure. What’s wrong with it? Jenna: I don’t know. First, it was printing bad copies. The print was really light. Then, the machine jammed. So now it’s just stuck and it won’t work at all. Linda: OK, let’s go take a look at it. Jenna: Oh, thank you so much! Linda: All right. See this light here on the front? Jenna: uh-huh. Copyright © 2007 English 1 on 1 Corp. All rights reserved. • Linda: That indicates where the paper is jammed. So if you just tap your finger on the

screen here it will tell you what to do. Jenna: OK. Linda: So it says open tray 2 and remove jammed paper. Go ahead and pull tray 2

open. Jenna: All right. Its open. Linda: Do you see any stuck paper in there? Jenna: Oh, yeah. I see a crumpled piece at the back. Linda: Go ahead and just pull it out. Just give it a good yank. Jenna: Got it! Linda: Ok, close the tray now. Jenna: Did that clear the jam? Linda: The light is gone from the screen here, so that means that the jam is fixed. Jenna: Thank goodness! Linda: There is something else though. Jenna: What? Linda: See this flashing light that says toner? Jenna: Yes. Linda: That means the toner cartridge is low. Its running out of ink. Thats why your

copies were so light. Jenna: Can we replace it? Linda: For now we can just shake up the cartridge and it should fix the problem for a

little while. Jenna: How do we do that? Linda: Open up the front of the copier and slide the toner cartridge out. Got it?

  • Jenna: Yup. Linda: OK. Now, just shake it up. Be careful not to get ink on your clothes though! Jenna: OK. Linda: Now just slide the cartridge back in and close up the front of the machine. It

should work. Jenna: The copier is starting again. Its working! Linda: Good job! Jenna: Thank you so much for showing me how to fix it, Linda! Ive never used this

kind of copier before. Linda: No problem. Its always causing problems! Ill call the copier company and

order more toner today. Jenna: Thanks again. Linda: Youre welcome. And good luck with your presentation! Jenna: Thanks! 1. What machines do you use at work? -At work I use a copy machine, a fax machine, a phone, a scanner, and a computer. I use the computer the most because I do most of my work on this machine.

    2. How have machines affected the work people do today? -I think machines have made peoples work a lot more efficient and easier today. Employees can get things done in less time using machines. I cant even imagine how businesses worked without a copy machine!

  • 3. Have you ever had to fix a machine at work?

-Yes. At my old job out copy machine was always broken. It constantly got paper jams. I would have to open it up and search for the stuck paper. Sometimes I couldnt even find it. It was very annoying and it took a lot of time to fix it.

    4. If you were having troubles with a machine at work, who would you ask for help?

-If I couldnt fix the machine myself, I would ask a co-worker that I was familiar with to help me. I would ask someone that I thought might know how to fix it and who wouldnt mind taking time to help me. If it was a really bad problem, I might call a service technician to come and fix the machine.

    5. Are you allowed to make personal copies at work? -No, technically we are not allowed to. However, if someone just needs to make a few personal copies, usually they just do it at work. Its not really a big deal.

    6. What work related machines do you know how to use? -I know how to use a computer, a fax machine, a phone, a scanner, a shredder, an electric stapler, a copier, and a printer.

    7. Do you think machines will replace people for some occupations in the future? If so, which ones? -Sure, I think this is possible in the future. For example, machines can make products now that people used to make by hand. Computers might also replace call operators in the future. Often, when you call to report a problem with something (like cable) a computer guides you through it and you never talk to a person.

    8. Do employees who are highly ranked in your company make their own copies and faxes? What do you think about this? -No, high level employees, like my boss, do not make their own copies or send their own faxes. They usually have a secretary to do this. I think this is OK as they are busy and have more important things to do. Sometimes I wonder why they cant do things for themselves though. For example, I used to have a boss who would make his secretary dial the numbers of a phone before he talked to someone.

    9. What machine do you use most in your life? -The machine I use the most in my life is my computer. I use it at least 3 hours a day. I use the computer for work and for personal use. Without it, I wouldnt know what to do!

    10. What machines are becoming obsolete today? -There are some machines that are becoming obsolete today. For example, the typewriter and maybe even a landline phone.
