FROM THE PRINCIPAL

MR MARKS

Last week it was great to finally meet the students and many of the parents. As I have mentioned, please come and say

hello when you see me out and about.

I must say that it was a very smooth start to the year with the commitment and dedication of the staff and the great attitudes of the students being very evident.

On the first morning I spoke to the students about the communities in which I belong to and how these communities identify themselves. Some of them are by the uniforms they wear, some are by the traditions they keep or games they play. I finished by explaining how we are part of God's community. However, being part of God's community is different to the others that I spoke of. We are not identified by uniforms, traditions, etc. We are identified by our actions.

I spoke of how 1 John 3:18 says, "Dear children, let us not love with words or tongue but with actions and with truth," and how we are to put God's love into action. People will identify us by God's love in action.

So as the song says,

"Put on love, everyday. Never hide God's love away. Don't save love for another day, Just put on love everyday."

STEPS If you are new to our school, perhaps you are not aware of our Secondary School’s Homework Centre. Each Wednesday afternoon, students from Year 7 – 10 meet together in the Library assisted by senior student mentors to assist them in completing regular homework and revision, and researching and writing assignments. It is our aim to pair junior students with a regular senior student mentor. Some students are returning for their third year of STEPS, and due to the generosity of our senior students we have places remaining for new students or students commencing high school this year. This program is primarily targeted towards young people who struggle with homework, revision and organising these skills. If you are interested, please contact Mrs Hetherington at the School.

STEPS will be continuing this year. Dates for STEPS for Term One.

5th Feb. STEPS Mentors Training

12th Feb. STEPS Mentors Training

19th Feb. School Swimming Carnival

26th Feb. - 9th April

STEPS will run with students and student mentors meeting in the Library.

CRUNCH AND SIP IS BACK – BETTER THAN

EVER FOR 2014 For many years now NCS Primary and Infants departments have incorporated Crunch and Sip into their school days on a voluntary basis. This year we are re- launching CRUNCH AND SIP as a whole K-6 initiative. Children are asked to bring in some vegetables and/ or fruit as well as a water bottle to participate each day. There will be opportunity given to all classes to eat their vegies and fruit and to drink their water sometime during the first session of teaching and learning time (8:35 – 10:25). This will ensure that the students are not hungry nor thirsty during the longest session of the day. It will also help them towards getting their daily recommended serves of vegetables (5 serves) and fruit (2 serves), as well as stay well hydrated with water. We have included an information sheet with facts and tips to help parents make good choices for their children’s health and nutrition. This is entitled ‘Go For 2 & 5’. Please keep it in a prominent place in your home (such as on the fridge door) where it can serve as a reminder to everyone in the family.

We have included a short video clip on the NCS website about Crunch and Sip. Please visit the site and watch the clip to learn more about this program.

As part of the official Crunch and Sip launch, we are holding an ‘NCS CARROT CRUNCH OFF’. We will have carrots for every K-6 student and then gather together to have everyone ‘Crunch on their Carrot’ at the same time. We will attempt to record the level of sound using a decibel recording app. I know that we have some noisy eaters in K-6, perhaps we can make enough of a din to break the NSW, Australian or even the world record for noisiest carrot eating!

For more information on healthy eating and physical activity for you and your family please visit: www.gofor2and5.com.au www.healthykids.nsw.edu.au

Keep watching out in future editions of Chronicle for more healthy eating and physical activity ideas!

The 2014 Relay for Life will be on the last weekend of

March. Here at NCS we have been involved since the very beginning in 2004.

We would love to have as many students involved as possible again this year. There will be a Year 5-6 team again (the Prime Movers). We are also planning to have a Stage 4 team (Yrs 7-8), a Stage 5 team (Yrs 9-10) and a Seniors team yet again.

We are also entering a staff team and welcome any parents who would like to sign up with us.

If you would like to be involved please either call Mr Smith or email him at [email protected]
