A New Year, A New Leader

Author Betty Reese said, “If you think you

are too small to be effective, you have never

been in bed with a mosquito.” I believe all

Jaycees would embrace this quote and cringe

at the thought of mosquitos. There is one

reason to be happy it is winter. The Jaycees

embody the spirit that small acts of kindness

and the efforts we make to improve our

community can and do make a difference.

In the past few months we have already

made great strides towards improving our

community. The Children’s Christmas

Shopping Spree is our prime example. We

can continue to provide services that may

have a special impact on a cause you hold

important.

Let’s not forget that one of the purposes of

the Jaycees is to create a business and

leadership organization as well. We can

foster skills that will aid all of us in our

lifetime. We put these skills to work by

conducting service projects. The opportunity

that we are giving ourselves is one which

many never get.

Another reason to be a Jaycee, which should

not be undervalued, is the great friendships

that form. I have really enjoyed my first

several months with the Jaycees and meeting

so many wonderful people. The fact that we

all want to work together to create improved

leadership skills, services to children and the

elderly, and positive social functions makes

this organization invaluable.

I have been working as a high school social

studies teacher for the past six years. I have

been very active in my community by

directing plays for middle school and high

school drama clubs. This has been an

enriching experience that I will continue as I

take on new challenges. The Jaycees was the

perfect opportunity and I am so grateful for

the experience and look forward to working

and having fun with all of you this year.

We also want you to know that if you have something you would like to highlight in the newsletter please feel free to submit an article to me by the first Friday of each month. Baker’s Square Night Tuesday January 25th from 5-8pm come on out to Baker’s Square for dinner and some pie! 10% of all the bills that night will be donated to the Kankakee Area Jaycees. Let’s pack the place so we can do this again next month!

Secretary’s Note

Learning Opportunities "The person who gets the farthest is generally the one who is willing to do and dare. The sure-thing boat never gets far from shore." -Dale Carnegie Hello Jaycees! My name is Andrew Ollis and I am your VP of Business for the 2011 year. I am excited to be a part of this group of people, and I am even more excited to help create the foundation for an organization that will hopefully be around for many years in the Kankakee area. I wanted to start with this quote from Dale Carnegie because what the Jaycees have in from of them is a wide open world of opportunity. With the right training and planning the things that we can collectively accomplish are great, and I hope you are as excited as I am. Let me put this on the table right now, I want you to think about an event or a project that you are interested in. It could be a haunted house, it could be a sports tournament put on by the Jaycees or it could be something else completely out of the ordinary. We are going to be training our members in the upcoming year how to accomplish projects that you may have only been able to dream about previously. My challenge for you is think of a project, figure out how we can make a profit from it and come up with a plan to execute! My goal is to have $10,000 in our bank account with all expenses paid by the end of 2011, and I know that is a reachable goal with some of the projects that we already have on the table. Join us at the next general meeting at Brickstone where we will have a training session on creating CPGs for events. In 2011, be creative, be daring; we have an awesome opportunity to make this a unique and successful chapter of the Jaycees. Andrew Ollis – Business VP

Hello, fellow Jaycees! This is Anne Maticic,

your Membership Development Vice

President for 2011. I am very excited to

hold this position. I love meeting new

people and getting them involved in

projects that can benefit the community.

As the Membership VP, I will work with

the Individual Development VP, Tonia

Zens, to create fun membership

recruitment events and orientations so

our chapter becomes more populated and

educated on what it means to be a Jaycee.

I would love to feature a selected Jaycee

member every month in this section. I

would ask the Jaycee to share some

information about themselves and how

they can benefit our chapter. A picture

will accompany the short bio to allow

everyone to put a face with the name. Let

me know if you have any ideas of where

to scout for new members. Look among

your friends and acquaintances, there are

future leaders all around us! Let’s get

them in our Kankakee Chapter!

Anne Maticic – Membership VP

Fellow Jaycees my name is Becky Hagge and I am truly thrilled to be able to have the opportunity to serve you this year on the board as your secretary! I am excited for our chapter and all the potential for greatness we have in our group. We have an extremely eager and talented group of people serving on the board who truly want to see the Jaycees flourish. Everyone has such big ideas and plans that I cannot wait for you all to be able to join in on the fun of seeing and participating in the planning and execution of these events. I love that that we all come from such different walks of life and we get to decide the fate of our group, what we do, how things get done and it all succeeds or fails because of us. It’s such an awesome opportunity that we have as young adults that not everyone our age gets! So I hope that you will all take advantage of this great opportunity set before us. Lucinda LaPierre and I will be sure that all of you are up to date on the happenings of the Jaycees so that no opportunity is missed. This newsletter will be sent out to each member via email during the week

Welcome to a new year and a new board!! My name is Tonia Zens and I am the new Vice President of Individual Development. I am very excited to share with you a little bit of information on myself and what I have planned for the year thus far. I am a Recreation Supervisor for the Bourbonnais Township Park District. I oversee all the youth, teen, and Active Adult programming for the district. I love what I do and hope I can share my experiences with you all. I love baseball and the St. Louis Cardinals, reading, playing video games, spending time with family and friends, and getting involved with different projects. As VP of Individual Development, I have a lot of great ideas for our chapter! I also need your great ideas. Anything you think would make a great learning experience for us, please contact me. This is our chapter and we should make it the best that we can. Throughout the year we will have trainings, guest speakers, workshops, etc. for you. Our goal is to have all of these workshops benefit you either as a Jaycee, in your career, or both. At the January General Meeting Andrew Ollis and I will be conducting a CPG Training. This will help us all have a better idea on how to fill out a CPG correctly and to make sure we are using it to the best of our ability. Be ready to learn all about a CPG and why it is so important to our organization. In February, I am currently working on having Bruce Clark come to our general meeting and speak with us about registering to vote and his experience as a Jaycee. If you have any other training ideas in mind, please do not hesitate to contact me. I am more than willing to work with each and every one of you to bring the learning opportunities to our chapter. I wish you all the best in 2011 as a Kankakee Area Jaycee! Tonia Zens – Individual VP

The First Group Picture at the Progressive Dinner Jeremy with the “Roosters”—Pete, Fred, Roger, & Donnie

This past December the Kankakee Area

Jaycees took on a big and exciting project. We

brought together 46 underprivileged kids

from around the Kankakee area to do some

Christmas shopping. We had 22 amazing

volunteers who came out bright and early on a

Saturday morning to help the kids shop. It was

an experience that both kids and adults will

not soon forget. One volunteer was moved

when one of the kids he took shopping used

the $50 to buy gifts for everyone in his family,

even his cat. Another volunteer told a story of

how a customer in Kmart heard about the

shopping spree and gave the volunteer extra

money for the children to go shopping . Those

are just a couple of stories out of many that

happened that day. Every one of the kids and

every adult who came to shop left with a big

smile on their face!

We would like to thank the following people

for helping make the shopping spree happen:

Alex Habeeb with Subway and Taco Johns for

donating the breakfast,

St. Paul’s Lutheran Church and School for

donating the money for kids to shop &

Kmart, for use of the store and community

room.

Treasurer’s Report

Hello fellow Jaycees! My name is Raquel Holody and I am the new Treasurer. I am looking forward to the upcoming year and everything that the Jaycees will be doing. I am a mother of three and also work in a local grade school. I believe it is important to teach children about compassion for others. The best way to teach a child is to show them by example. For this reason I chose to become a member of the Kankakee Area Jaycees. I want to make a difference in our community. I believe that change happens one choice, one person, one gesture at a time. I truly believe in the difference each of us can make when we all come together for the greater good. Mother Teresa said “We can do no great things, only small things with great love.” I look forward to the year ahead and the “small things” we can do with “great love”.
