She will be only the fourth woman to hold the position and the first female Labour member to become First Cit- izen of Cork. Cllr Clancy will take over the role from the current Lord Mayor, Cllr John But- timer, when the City Council holds its Annual General Meeting on June 21 next. From As- sumption Road in Black- pool, Cllr Clancy works as a full-time public rep- resentative. A married, mother-of-three, she was co-opted onto Cork City Council in the North Central ward in 2003 when she replaced Kathleen Lynch, now a Government junior minister. Ms Clancy retained her seat in two sub- sequent elections in 2004 and 2009. Labour Councillor Lorraine King- ston is set to be elected deputy Lord Mayor, and it will be the first time in the council’s history that women have held the role of both Lord Mayor and Continued on page two. City’s volunteer heroes saluted at awards night By DEIRDRE O’REILLY THE city saluted its heroes last night at the 10th Lord Mayor’s Community and Voluntary Awards. Of the 700 unsung voluntary groups in Cork city that were nominated for the annual awards, Cór Fhéile were the overall winners. Founded in 1947, and every year since, up to 3,500 children from 60 schools throughout the city and county perform on the Cór Fhéile stage of the City Hall over a two week period. The Cór Fhéile is organised by a small group of voluntary teachers who give their time freely to the event. Fiona Giles of Cór Fhéile said: “We can’t believe we’ve won. We really are humbled.” Six other community and voluntary awards were presented at the event which is sponsored by the and Express Kitchens and Floors. A further six people received civic awards from the Lord Mayor, Cllr John Buttimer, who said: “Tonight is a night of acknowledgment, a night of recognition, a night of celebration.” See pages 12 and 13 for more.
