He was 53 years old. The married father-of-three was a noted hurling, football and soccer player linked with east Cork sides Aghada GAA and St John Bosco’s FC of Midleton. He had worked at Merck Millipore for the past 20 years. Playing gaelic football with Aghada in the 1980s, he was one of what is often referred to as a “golden generation” of players that included the current Cork football boss Conor Counihan. Club PRO Mike O’Brien said Billy had won medals at every level and was an integral part of the Aghada side that moved from junior to senior level from 1989 to 1991. He also won senior medals with Imokilly in 1984 and 1986. “Billy was a true sportsman, whether it was football or hurling or soccer. He was the type of guy that was good at any sport he played and always wanted to play for the joy of it,” he said. Billy’s friend, Joe Hartnett, said they had been playing together for the past 30 years. “He just loved sport and even up until last season, he was playing in goal for Bosco’s. He was a naturally gifted player. “He was also a passionate Manchester City fan. He regularly travelled to games with his daughter. He was a devoted family man and will be sadly missed.” Tributes to Billy were featured on the Aghada GAA and St John Bosco’s FC websites today.
