Cork spends e300kcollecting house feeMORE than €300,000 wasspent administering and col-lecting the controversialhousehold charge in Corkduring 2012.
A Freedom of Information requestfrom the Evening Echo to Cork Cityand County Council revealed thesix-figure spend by the local author-ities on administering the €100charge on behalf of central govern-ment. Compliance with the charge is

administered by the Revenue Com-missioners.
However, Cork County Councilstated that it estimated it spent€180,000 from January 1 and October31 in relation to the charge.
Cork City Council spent €153,138on administering the charge in thesame period.
Local authorities across the coun-try accepted payment and admin-istered elements of the chargeduring the year on behalf of the
Local Government ManagementAgency. A spokesman for the Depart-ment of the Environment confirmedthat the local authorities will not bereimbursed for this expenditure,pointing out that the funds collectedwere paid into a centralised LocalGovernment Fund which was thenpaid on the local authorities.
However, all local authorities sawtheir payments from the fund cutthis year.● See page nine for more.
