Course Description & Learning ObjectivesHuman Physiology Laboratory is designed to provide you with a hands-on learning opportunity to help you a) solidify major physiological concepts, b) lean basic laboratory methodology, c) learn to use various instruments to gather scientific data, and d) learn to evaluate scientific data by calculations, graphing and analysis. Fortunately, the majority of the experiments are directly related to the concepts and ideas discussed during the lecture portion of this course. I hope that you will take advantage of the opportunity to work with your peers and with me to fine tune your understanding of topics in physiology.

See p. 2 for details.†You cannot pass the course if you earn less than 80 points in lab.°Lab instructors are not permitted to provide extra credit unless the extra credit has been approved by the lecture instructor. Any unapproved extra credit may be removed from your grade by the lecture instructor.∆No modifications to lab grades are allowed after you last lab period!!! It is your responsibility to make sure that all lab grades in the grade book are correct and to notify the lab instructor of any errors prior to the end of the last lab meeting.

Laboratory Etiquette & ConductSafety is critical, so please follow safety guidelines to avoid any potential accidents in the laboratory setting. No food or drink is allowed in the laboratory. Water bottles and other food or drink items must be left outside or kept in your closed backpacks. You must wear close-toed footwear. If you forget to wear close-toed shoes, you can purchase disposable booties at the bookstore. Because cell phonesinterfere with your class participation, and can be distracting to your classmates and instructor, cell phonesmust be turned OFF and stored away during the entire lab period. Please refer to “Introduction to Biology 207 Laboratories” in your lab manual for additional guidelines.

Academic HonestyIn the laboratory setting, you are encouraged to work together, but cheating, copying, plagiarism, etc. will not be tolerated on quizzes, exams or lab reports. Your answers for lab reports MUST be in your own words. In other words, DO NOT COPY the lab manual, textbook, responses from other students, or any other source. You will receive a 0 on any lab report that is not completed in your own words. Discussing quizzes or exams with students, who have already taken the quiz/exam before you, and discussing quizzes/exams with someone, who has not yet taken the quiz/exam, after you have already taken it are both considered academic dishonesty. All parties involved will receive a 0. If you are caught cheating on a quiz or exam, you will

receive a 0, and depending on the severity, you might receive failing grade in the course, and/or recommendation for expulsion.

Attendance & ParticipationBecause laboratory activities require your active participation during the lab period, attendance is mandatory. DO NOT schedule anything that will interfere with any portion of the lab period. You will not receive credit on Lab Reports if you are absent on the day of the activity. In addition, any action—including but not limited to tardiness, cell phone use, and leaving lab early—which prevents you from actively participating in ALL activities, will result in point penalties on the Lab Reports.

Lab Report Grading GuidelinesYou must complete and submit ALL 12 Lab Reports as part of your lab grade. All Lab Reports are due at the beginning of the following lab period. I will randomly select and critically grade 5 Lab Reports for up to 6 points each. You must also participate in all activities, and complete and submit the remaining “non-critically graded” Lab Reports on time or points will be deducted from your overall lab grade. To receive full credit (6/6) onCritically Graded Lab Reports, you must:

-Be present and actively participate in all lab activitiesassociated with a critically graded Lab Report.-Submit the Lab Report on time. Points will be deducted as follows for late submissions:

-1 point deduction: late (even a millisecond!) on the day of collection or up to one day late-2 point deduction: 2-7 days late -No credit: over 1 week late

-Read each question carefully and provide a thorough answer to all parts of each question-Complete all fill-ins, graphs, and tables-Answer all questions in your own words.Copying from another student, the textbook or any other source will result in a 0 on critically graded lab reports.

Point Breakdown for Critically Graded Lab Reports: (5 randomly selected reports at 6 points each)Number of Points Missed

Final Points AssignedPoint Deductions for “Non-Critically” Graded Lab Reports:

-0.5 point deduction for partial participation during that lab, incomplete, and/or late Lab Reports-1 point deduction for absence during the associated lab activities or for failure to submit Lab Reports

If you are unsure of what a question is asking or how to answer a question for the Lab Reports, ask me! I’m here to help you gain a strong understanding of physiology and help you succeed in the class!

Make-Ups: Lab ActivitiesFor your benefit, I will not require you to provide documentation of a serious and compelling reason for any one lab that you are unable to attend/complete. However, this DOES NOT EXCUSE you from participating. You must CONTACT ME in advance and no later than the day of your absence, so we can arrange for you to attend another section to receive credit. When you attend section you must have the other lab instructor either sign the top of your lab report or email me as verification of your attendance. For all subsequent missed activities, documentation of serious and compelling reasons must be provided. Also, note that since the lab technician removes all supplies for the week Friday afternoon, any approved make ups should be completed by the last lab of the week, which is Friday 1-3:45 pm. See p.3 for other sections.

Make-Ups: Lab Quizzes and Lab ExamsIn order to make up a lab quiz or exam, you must CONTACT ME ON or BEFORE the scheduled date to arrange a time for a make-up. Make-up exams and quizzes will be permitted only in cases in which documentation ofserious and compelling reasonscan be provided. All make-ups must be completed within one week of the original quiz/exam date and will not be the same as the original.Note: Examples of excuses that ARE considered serious and compelling: illness or injury that prevents you from attending lab (dated doctor’s note required) or jury duty (documentation required). Examples of excuses that are NOT considered serious and compelling: work schedule or internships, non-emergency medical/dentist appointments, social events, etc.

In addition, if you show up late enough during the hour allotted for the regular lab exam time such that another student has already completed the exam and left, 10 points (20% of the exam) will be deducted from your score unless you can provide documentation of a serious and compelling reason for being late.

Add and Withdrawal PolicyPlease refer to the lecture syllabus for details. However, note the following: No instructor or office staff can add or change a class for you.  Only YOU, THE STUDENT, can add or change classes in YOUR schedule.  You may add this class in person at Enrollment Services during the registration period and you are responsible for following the appropriate steps for officially withdrawing from a class. In addition, each student is responsible for checking their MyCSULB account weekly to be certain that the Class Schedule listed accurately reflects the courses s/he is enrolled in for the current semester.  Students should also check for any notices from the University regarding admission and registration deadlines.

E-mail EtiquetteHere are some tips for using e-mail in collegiate and professional settings: 1) To avoid being deleted as potential SPAM, include a descriptive subject heading (e.g. HUMAN PHYSIOLOGY or BIOL 207). 2) Address your recipient by name(e.g., Hi Jennifer,), 3) Use complete sentences and avoid slang to prevent miscommunication, and 4) Sign your e-mails with your full name.

BeachboardPlease check Beachboard before coming to lab each week for announcements and supplements.

AccommodationsA student who feels he/she may need an accommodation based on the impact of a disability should contact Disabled Students Services [phone: (562) 985-5401; email: [email protected]; location: Brotman Hall, Room 270]. For students who have already been determined eligible for DSS services please provide me with the proper form from DSS in a timely manner, at the beginning of the semester and at least one week prior to the verified and intended need.
