Most of us love to worry. We worry about everything. We worry when it is hot. We worry when it is cold. We worry about our sports teams, we wring our hands about our schools, we get really upset with our govern- ment. We worry about the lives of famous people. Of course, there are times when we think our worries are legitimate. Like worrying over a sick child. A downturn in the economy that might cost us our jobs. Or family members not getting along. And we proudly equate our worrying with “loving concern.” Except God tells us to “Stop it!” Jesus asked then and He asks now, “Can any one of you by worrying add a single hour to your life?” (Matthew 6:27). Meaning “worrying” accomplishes nothing. So the Apostle Paul writes, "Stop worrying about anything; instead, pray about everything. Tell God what you need, and thank him for all he has done. Then you will experience God’s peace, which exceeds an- ything we can understand. His peace will guard your hearts and minds as you live in Christ Jesus." (Philippians 4:6-7) Continued on page 2

F ROM THE P ASTOR : Stop worrying! Most of us love to worry. We worry about everything. We worry when it is hot. We worry when it is cold. We worry about our sports teams, we wring our hands about our schools, we get really upset with our govern-ment.

Then you will experience God’s peace, which exceeds an-ything we can understand. His peace will guard your hearts and minds as you live in Christ Jesus." (Philippians 4:6-7)

Stop Worrying! (continued from page 1)

"God wants us to trade our worries for peace of mind through prayer. But this is easier said than done. Far too often, when we are not worrying we are thinking and believing that it is the power of our mind that can ef-fect change. That someone's healing or provision is dependent on his own positive attitude and the strength of his own convictions. A good attitude is nice to have, but our help comes from God. In fact, our good attitude must be rooted in the truth that our help comes from God. God tells us to "stop worrying about anything." Worry is the opposite of faith. When it comes down to it, worrying is nothing more than prideful independence and self-reliance. God also says, "pray about everything. Tell God what you need, and thank him for all he has done." God already knows what we need. But He wants us to admit that we need them and that we are depending on Him. A heart that is thankful is the heart that recognizes we do not deserve an-ything but God's judgment for our sins and rebellion, but instead God has given us life through Jesus Christ. Everything else from that point on--the good and the bad, sickness and health, the ups and down of life--are pure gravy. And God recognizes we go through tough times. But He wants us to come to Him in prayer and ask for His help. And God will be there with His grace and His mercies when we need them. He is a good Father. "If you then, who are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father who is in heaven give good things to those who ask him!" (Matthew 7:11). We cannot manipulate God. We simply ask. We do not practice hocus pocus. We simply ask. We do not do incantations. We simply ask. And when we ask, when we come to Him in prayer, He promises His incredible peace that will wash away all the worries and apprehensions you have in your heart. That is God's promise. We believe Him instead of believing in ourselves. We simply and humbly ask in prayer. “Ask, and it will be given to you" (Matthew 7:7). It's not magic. It's faith in God. Gather up all your worries, put them in a box, and trade them all in for “God’s peace, which exceeds anything we can understand,” by praying. Now that's a pretty good trade! Lakan
