Hope this finds everyone fit and well and ready for spring and everything that goes with it. It has been a long winter at our house, but it gets better every day. We went to St. Louis to the cancer doctor last week and got a very good report. Everything is looking up and getting better everyday so thank the Lord for that. Now lets have some fun March 4th & 5th is the Show-Me Sale at Barnett MO: driving horses on the 4th and draft horses on the 5th.Then Boone CO March 9th,10th &11th at the MO State Fair grounds. Then on to Spuds Memorial plowing in Greenview IL. Then the Annual Meeting at Jim and Mila Cunningham`s barn on April 9th. Everyone come and bring something to auction off for our yearly fundraiser and a lot of fun. Then, it is off to Neal`s plowing May 6th,7th & 8th. Haven't been getting near as much driving as I would like done but between the ice and mud it's just not worth the risk. So instead I have been focusing on getting equipment ready for show season. Mane decorations and tail bows done! Now on to a little bigger project of refinishing my new to me harness. The Facebook Group has been growing quickly and we have over 260 members! Thank you to everyone who has shared to the group and helped us make it a success. We are hoping to see quite a few new members at the annual meeting April 9th. Please remember scholarship applications are due to Cassie the last week of March. We are looking forward to the upcoming events; Boone CO Draft Horse and Mule Sale where we will hopefully be parting with our aluminum trailer to upgrade to a semi trailer, and some miscellaneous equipment that we don't use or don't have the time to restore. The annual meeting is quickly approaching and we are busy getting auction items ready. Then Shelby and I are meeting up with some more girls to make a ladies weekend out of the Percheron judging clinic while the boys head to a plowing in Columbia. Then we gather the troops and head to Neal’s plowing and the summer will be off in full force! Hope to see you along the trail! The Treasurer reported the following: There is currently a balance of $1,361.88 in the bank and approximately $100 petty cash. Since the last meeting, the expenses included the January newsletter printing and postage. Jim Cunningham motioned to accept the treasurer’s report, Bobby Wright seconded. Motion passed. Old Business:

T-shirt/hat reorder - Iva’s Printing (the printing shop that was used for the 2015 shirt order) was contacted by Cassie McKerlie about a re-order. The prices are the following: Hats are $7 each, shirts are $4.50 each plus an additional ~$2 for 2XL and up. Neal DeVasher motioned to spend $500 to order more shirts for the 2016 annual meeting, Robyn Holtgrewe seconded. Motion passed. New Business:

President and Secretary/Treasurer positions are up for election this year. Nominations opened at this meeting and will be open until closed at the annual meeting. Dave Eichman nominated Billy Meyer for president, Bobby Wright seconded. Robyn Holtgrewe nominated Cassie McKerlie for Secretary/Treasurer, Dave Eichman seconded. The Linch Pin Award winner was decided on and will be awarded at the annual meeting. The Member of the Year Award winner will be decided on by President Billy Meyer and announced at the annual meeting. An award for participation in the MDHMA facebook group will be awarded at the annual meeting. This is a new recognition not given in the past. The upcoming nominations for youth representatives sparked some conversation of the job duties and how the youth are compensated. We will be looking for volunteers to help the kids to make sure the right ribbons are being handed out to the right classes, etc. Also, they will be given sashes and crowns to use rather than having to provide their own. We would like to add a picture of the youth representatives to the Draft Horse Journal ad. Cassie McKerlie will look into pricing on a larger ad to fit pictures.

Reminder - The Draft Horse Journal ad will be due in mid-April/early-May. If you would like to renew or add your farm information to the ad, please confirm information and pay for it. The ad price is currently $55 per person. The Belgian Extravaganza will be held in Springfield, MA at the beginning of October 2016. MDHMA will sponsor coats for the winners of the farm team classes (feed team race, log skid, obstacle, walking plow, etc.). We are still waiting on information from the coat supplier for details about the order. There were 9 coats handed out at the Percheron Congress, a similar number will be given at the Belgian Extravaganza. Robyn Holtgrewe is working to get a draft horse fun show going in St. Clair, MO in partnership with the local club. Robyn is asking about a date for next year due to date conflicts this year. The local club is taking care of the concessions, gate and arena preparation. Robyn will be collecting donations for awards from local tack and feed shops. There is plenty of parking. A judge will be needed for the hitch and cart classes. Billy Meyer was contacted by Richard Ray about the Richard Ray/Bobby Wright plow days. Richard would like to give a $50 gift certificate for the man that let us use his land/electricity. Jim Cunningham motioned to send $50 to Richard Ray to get a gift certificate, Robyn Holtgrewe seconded. Motion passed. Bobby Wright was contacted by Scot Soendker regarding the MO State Fair. Scot is looking for old time machinery, carriages, wagons, etc. to go on display during the draft horse show. The MO State Fair is looking to do some farm team classes on Friday as well as Saturday and Sunday. Team barrel racing with sleds was proposed. The board of directors asked to receive a reminder with a tentative agenda approximately a week before meetings. This will be provided by the Secretary/Treasurer. The Missouri River Valley Steam Engine Show had

2016 MDHMA Annual Meeting

The Annua l Meeting welcome @

11:00 AM

o n Saturday April 9, 2016

at Cunningham barn Columbia MO.

Everyone Welcome!

Eat around noon.

Directions:

http://missourdrafthorse.com/Directions_Cunningham_Barn.html

Greetings from Bobby and Genny

It’s a sunny, warm and windy day here close to

Wien, MO. That nasty mud is drying up quickly. It

sure makes it easier to get the chores done.

We haven’t been getting a lot done with trying to go

exercise at least 2 or 3 days a week. Macon is not

that far away, but it just takes up a lot of our day.

Bobby is walking so much better and it sure hasn’t

hurt me, so it’s worth it.

My sister, Diane, has completed her cancer

treatment and is waiting for a CT scan on March 7.

Please keep praying that her cancer is gone never to

be heard of again. The doctors have told her she is

the poster child for chemo patients. I am so thankful

she did not have the nausea and other bad stuff some

people have to deal with.

We had the Bocke Christmas at our house this year.

I had it catered by a young mother from New

Cambria and she did a wonderful job. Doing it that

way was so relaxing for me and I’m sure it helped

her out too. I know my family felt funny not

bringing anything, but they really liked it when it

was time to go home.

“A Christmas Carol” at the Lyceum was very good.

Now, I’m looking forward to seeing the Texas

Tenors in March. I will be going with a dear friend

from church and Sassy Ladies. We try to have at

least one day away from everything each year. We

plan to go to the Federated Church there in Arrow

Rock and I got reservations at the Old Tavern for

dinner so it should be a fun time.

It looks like there will 4 elections to work this year

in Wien. I am looking forward to all of them except

the one in April. It will just be a school board

election for Salisbury, MO and most of the Bee

Branch Township kids go to school at Marceline.

So, it may be the lightest turnout ever and that

makes for a very long day! I will have to miss the

Annual Meeting because that is the day of the

Chariton County Caucus. As I am the secretary, I

wouldn’t feel right not doing my job for that. Mike

Ewigman and Bobby always have a good time when

they go someplace together, so it will be OK.

There were 19 people at Cowboy Church in Callao

last night. It is so good to see it growing again.

That’s about all I know, so I will quit and wish

everyone a very blessed Easter and a wonderful

Spring.

It has been unanimously received by the Belgiun Association Congress, they would be honored to have the MDHMA & members sponsor the Farm Team events at Springfield, MA, in October, 2016, with a jacket to the winner of each event. We have had a very mild winter even though I don't care much for frigid temperatures. I'm a T-shirt kinda guy no coat necessary. The last week has been kind of a teaser. Tthe weatherman just said “We had only 6" of snow this year” and our kids complained "No snow days were taken." Life is a bit different from when we attended school. Our buses had snow chains; we didn't have any snow days either. It’s the same but yet different as they think we lived when they had dinosaurs. I know my horses are wanting to start the plowing season as they are standing by the gate everyday. Is that not the first sign of spring? Our last gathering seems so far gone & I am hopeful the girls will remember where they put their shoes so they may start working out to be ready for the first out of the gate plowing event. Sounds as though Bobby, Doyle, Elsie, Jim & Wilbert are doing well with the help of the MDHMA support team. Keep up the great job & if anyone knows of other members that need a boost, please let us know We Keep Our Lines Tight on things like that! Thank you to all our members for all they do. We are planning a great annual banquet & once again my son Dusty will be barbequing the meat for the meal. Just bring a dessert & a side dish to complete the meal. The more the merrier, good food & friendship with loads of laughter to be had. Don't forget to bring something for the auction & save your pennies to bid on that one of a kind or must have items. Let the bidding war begin!!!!! We will be handing out a raffle ticket this year as you register. A MDHMA hat, & t-shirt are a few of the prizes to be given away. Just something new to fan the excitement of this year’s annual banquet.

Congratulations for grandma-to-be Valerie - news of a baby boy expected to arrive in July. This will be Val's 1st spoil alert; wish her well. I can see a Special Pony in the works. Now is the time to check out all your harness, lines, plows, etc so we will be ready when the whistle blows to go to the field. You don't want to miss a single event due to missing or broken parts. If you've not sent in your dues please feel free to pop them in the mail to Cassie. Hope to see you at a plowing, show, or the next sale or just on the road. Hope to see you soon Bristle Ridge Percherons Neal & Terri DeVasher

Almost Spring Greetings from Northwest

Missouri !

The sun is starting to stick around longer in the evenings now and soon it will be time to change all our clocks to spring ahead an hour. Wish they would just leave the time alone! Hope this newsletter finds all our fellow teamsters and friends in good health and spirits. So thankful that Elsie is doing well and has gotten a good report from her Doctor. Doyle took his Amish friend to mule sale in Tennessee so he is feeling much better. Larry has been working on Elsie's sleigh and am glad we took before pictures because you wouldn't recognize it now! Think a friend of mine will do the reupholster work and back to Elsie it goes. Eli my favorite #3 son has gone back to New Mexico by way of Arkansas and Georgia. He does forestry work for the federal government. It was great having him home for a month! He cut hedge post, sold firewood and built a retaining wall out of split hedge post. We took some hedge and red oak logs to a sawmill in Wathena, Ks and had them sawed into planks and boards. Larry says if I wouldn't work the boys so hard they would come home more often! I had some tree shearing and bulldozing done last fall so I need to reseed again and clean up ground of roots and fallen branches. Lots to do this summer and I think about it to chase

the winter blahs away. Everyone should have an Eli and I am blessed to have 5. We got so much done when they were all home for the holidays. My New Years Resolutions for 2016 is to build better interior fences as the horses were in the backyard twice eating the birdseed out of the bird feeders. The birds were totally scandalized and I have had to replace the bird feeders! May add a wash rack to the list too. Larry and I went to a Western Memorabilia sale at Liberty, Mo. that his friend Alvin Weigle had. I bought two pairs of Calvary spurs and an old Charles Shepler saddle that was made in Kansas City, Mo. Lots of interesting stuff. Bought a homemade big bale feeder with a roof last fall and it has worked well. Am wanting to use up all my big bales this winter, as some bales are two years old. Was told this is supposed to be a dry summer, hope that's not right! Have sold two registered fillies to a lady in Ohio. May deliver them halfway when we go to Tom and Lori's to plow in April. I raise them to sell but always hate to see them go. Larry and I are planning on going to Waverly Draft horse sale in Iowa at the end of March. Hope the weather stays mild but just in case had better wash the caked cow manure off my coveralls! Better head to the barn and do my chores as I hear my two spotted mini donkeys braying their hunger. You should have seen the other horses reaction to their braying the first time. Was quite funny! Don't need an alarm clock with Patches and Poncho around. Looking forward to spring and seeing everyone. As always the gate here is always open for friends and their horses.

Keep the furrows in your life and fields straight. Valerie and the E 7 Critters
