GAMES 16,17 St. Mary’s (3-8)St. Olaf (7-3-2)

Page 2: 01/06 UW-Stevens Point Men's Hockey game notes

Head Coach Chris Brooks: is 6-7-2 in his first season at UWSP. He holds a 2-3-1 record on the road.

St. Mary’s Coach Bill Moore: The St. Mary’s alumnus is in his fifth season at the helm of the Cardinals. In that time frame he is 29-78-5.

St. Olaf Coach Sean Goldsworthy: is currently in his 15th season as head coach. Goldsworthy, who played for the Oles in his collegiate days, is 154-173-45 during his tenure.

Last Time Out: The Pointers split with then seventh-ranked Adrian.

On Friday, the Bulldogs edged Point 3-1. Kyle Heck managed to knot things up at 1-1 with his powerplay goal in the second period. However two unanswered goals from Adrian in the third proved to be the difference. Nick Graves made 24 saves in the effort.

Once again, UWSP found itself trailing early. Three goals in the second and third periods quickly erased a 2-0 deficit as the Pointers emerged as 6-2 victors.

Scott Henegar recorded two goals for the Pointers, while Kevin Gibson and Jerry Freismuth each had two assists. Brandon Jaeger stopped 23 shots to earn his second win of the season.

Players to Watch: UWSP’s Luke Nesper recorded his fourth goal of the season last weekend to bring his point total to 11. A count that is second on the team. The senior forward from Eagle River has also collected a team-high seven assists.

Austin Balko of St. Mary’s has tallied four goals and four assists this season. The sophomore from Midland, Mich. currently leads the teams in goals and points.

Defenseman Derek Grogan has proved to be an offensive presence for the Oles. The senior leads the team in goals (6) and points (13).

Iron Men: St. Olaf has 11 players on the roster who have skated in every contest this season. UWSP and St. Mary’s each have 10.

A Fresh Start: The Pointers hope to continue their trend of success in the month of January. UWSP is 14-5-2 in the first month of the calendar year the last three seasons.

No Place Like Home: Both opposing squads have enjoyed success at their home rinks. St. Olaf is 3-0-1 at home this season, while St. Mary’s is 3-2.

Mixed Results: Of the three schools, St. Olaf is the only one with a winning record against non-conference opponents this season. The Oles are 4-1-1, while the Pointers are 2-3 and the Cardinals just 2-5.

On the Road Again: The Pointers picked up their first road wins of the season the last time they were away from K.B. Willett Arena. They will get a chance to keep the momentum rolling as six of their last 10 games will be on the road.
