The young violinist Lisa Ferschtman has already received a great deal ofcritical praise for her first two CDs. The second of these featuring themusic of Beethoven and Schubert, released in 2007, was particularlywell received. On this new hybrid SACD, she performs some of the greatmasterpieces for solo violin. The disc includes a sonata and partita by JS Bach and two sonatas by the Spanish virtuoso violinist and composerYsaÿe which were inspired by Bach’s earlier pieces.

Although still in her twenties, violinist Liza Ferschtman is already recognized asone of the most significant artists of her generation. Her performances are knownfor their passionate and at the same time intellectual qualities. Her two CDs todate, the first of music by Debussy, Poulenc and Tchaikovsky, and the secondworks from Beethoven and Schubert, were both very well received by theinternational music press. In November 2006 Liza Ferschtman received the DutchMusic Award, the highest distinction awarded to musicians in the Netherlands.

J S Bach emerged as the pre-eminent composer of the first half of the 18thcentury and left an enormous musical legacy, including his masterful sonatas andpartitas for solo violin. At the beginning of the 20th century, the Spanishcomposer and virtuoso violinist Eugene Ysaÿe took these pieces as an inspirationfor his own Sonatas for Violin solo. As an example of this, like Bach’s, the firstsonata is in the key of G minor and divided into four movements, alternatingbetween slow and fast.

The Netherlands Symphony Orchestra, alongside its illustrious Dutchcounterpart The Concertgebouw Amsterdam, has a long tradition ofMahlerian performance. It is here led by its artistic director Willem deVriend, in a recording of the 1893 “Hamburg” version of Mahler’s firstsymphony. This version bears the title Symphonic Poem in Two Parts,“Titan”, and includes the later discarded “Blumlein” movement.

Jan Willem de Vriend is the artistic director of Combattimento ConsortAmsterdam, the highly-rated early music group, and since 2006 the chiefconductor and artistic director of the Dutch Symphony Orchestra. The DSO hastaken a major role on the Netherlands’ musical scene, it has been involved inpremieres of works by Offenbach, Say and Mahler, and by substituting historicalinstruments in the brass section, it has developed its own distinctive sound in the18th and 19th century repertoire. Recently orchestra and conductor haveembarked on a series of recordings of Beethoven’s complete symphonies.

The first performance of the Symphonic Poem in Two Parts, later his FirstSymphony, was conducted by Mahler in Budapest on 20 November 1889, andreceived a cool if not hostile reception. This new recording is of the restored 1893“Hamburg” version, and is made up of two parts and five movements. Part one,called “From the Days of Youth” contains the first three movements, with thelater discarded “Blumlein” movement sandwiched between the first and theScherzo, and Part two, “The Human Comedy”, consists of the Funeral March andthe fifth movement, Finale: From Inferno to Paradise.

The Japanese conductor Yutaka Sado studied under Leonard Bernsteinand Seiji Ozawa and amongst other awards won first prize at theLeonard Bernstein International Competition in 1995. Sado was alsoinvolved with Bernstein and Michael Tilson Thomas in founding thePacific Music Festival. On this new hybrid SACD recording ofTchaikovsky’s ever popular Fifth Symphony and the same composer’sMarche Slave, Yutaka Sado directs the Deutsche Symphonie-OrchesterBerlin.

Yutaka Sado was born in Kyoto, Japan. In 1987 he studied with LeonardBernstein and Seiji Ozawa at the Tanglewood Music Festival and becameBernstein’s assistant during his concert tour with the Schleswig-Holstein FestivalOrchestra. He won the Premier Grand Prix of the 39th International Competitionfor Young Conductors Besançon in 1989 and later the first prize in the LeonardBernstein International Competition (1995). Sado assisted Bernstein and MichaelTilson Thomas in founding the Pacific Music Festival in Sapporo (Japan), wherehe appeared as permanent conductor and guest conductor. In 1993 Sado wasappointed chief conductor of the Orchestre des Concerts Lamoureux; and in 1999he was appointed First Guest Conductor of the Orchestra Sinfonica di Milano“Giuseppe Verdi”.

The world premiere of the Fifth Symphony took place in St. Petersburg onNovember 1888 under Tchaikovsky’s baton, and it was an immediate success.Since then it has become one of the most frequently performed and popularpieces in the repertoire. Like the Symphony No. 4, the Fifth is a cyclical symphonydue to the recurrence of the "motto" theme in more than one movement. Unlikethe Fourth, however, the theme is heard in all four movements, a featureTchaikovsky had first used in the Manfred Symphony, which was completed lessthan two years before the Fifth.

In 1945, the new Polish Government asked for the heart of Chopin previouslyburied in Paris. A woman called Paulina Czernika approached the PolishGovernment claiming to have some love letters from the composer to her great-grandmother, the Countess Delfina Potocka. Eventually alarmed, the Ministrybegan a witch-hunt against Madame Czernika – Delfina Potocka was the onlywoman to whom Chopin had dedicated any music – these letters were said to bepornographic, anti-Semitic and thoroughly damaging to the image of thecomposer as a Polish hero. Czernika ‘committed suicide’ on 17th October 1949,100 years to the day after the death of Chopin - or was she murdered, and if so,why? Were the letters in fact forgeries? And what was the truth about DelfinaPotocka?

Tony Palmer’s dramatised film tells the story of Czernika Potocka, probing averitable mystery in a series of parallel scenes from 1945 and 1845. New light isshed on Chopin himself, not least in the interpretation of the music brought to life
miraculously by the beautiful young Russian pianist, Valentina Igoshina.

Igoshina is an internationally acclaimed pianist who is best known for herinterpretations of Chopin and Rachmaninoff. She has appeared as a soloist withmany famous orchestras including the Royal Concertegebouw Orchestra, BBCScottish Symphony Orchestra, London Philharmonic Orchestra and The Hallé.

In an article in Gramophone (September, 2008) "Chopin Reprogrammed and aVital Young Russian Relishes the Task," Bryce Morrison said “she relishes everyaspect of Chopin's enchanting urbanity, his alternating exuberance andintrospection, his light and shade." The Diotima Quartet’s new release, Onslow, has recently been awarded thediapason d’or and features a programme devoted entirely to the work of themuch admired and often overlooked romantic composer, George Onslow.Nicknamed ‘the French Beethoven’ by his contemporaries, George Onslow was aBritish-French romantic composer who composed more than 60 quartets andquintets. These works are being rediscovered and published thanks to thesupport of the Bru-Zane Foundation in Venice. Of the three quartets recordedhere, Op. 55 is probably the most concertante, but also the most virtuosic for thefour instrumentalists, who engage in dialogue throughout.

The Diotima Quartet tour extensively throughout the world and are the recipientsof countless awards for their recordings including: Coup de Coeur of theAcadémie Charles Cros and a Diapason d’Or of the Year 2004 in the ‘Discovery’category (Lachenmann/Nono); Diapason d’Or 2008 (Janácek quartets); Choc duMonde de la Musique (Lucien Durosoir quartets). story between the French fashion designer and the Russian-borncomposer. The disc includes a complete recording of Stravinsky’s TheRite of Spring, performed by the Berlin Philharmonic under Sir SimonRattle – their only currently available version on CD – as well as thescore by leading film composer Gabriel Yared.

Released in many countries during the next few weeks, Coco Chanel & IgorStravinsky stars Anna Mouglalis and Mads Mikkelsen in the title roles. The first

15 minutes of the film are devoted to one of the most famous and notoriouspremieres in musical history, the opening performance of Stravinsky's

revolutionary work for Diaghilev’s Ballets Russes, The Rite of Spring, in Paris

on 29 May, 1913.

Accordingly this CD opens with a full performance of the legendary Stravinskyballet, the first on CD by the Berlin Philharmonic conducted by Sir Simon Rattle,recorded in Berlin in 2003. His Abendmusiken becameparticularly famous though the large scale oratorios he produced for them.Unfortunately, the music for none of these influential works survived; only printedtexts for some of the oratorios are extant today. Recent research, however,turned up evidence that not only oratorios but also shorter vocal works with bothGerman and Latin texts were performed at the Abendmusiken. Celebrating their 25th year together, the Vertavo String Quartet nowreleases its very first Beethoven recording. The works on this newhybrid SACD, the String Quartet Opus 130 and the Grosse Fugue, havebeen part of the Vertavo repertoire as long as the group has been inexistence, and the insight that this brings is clearly evident in thesememorable performances.

Formed in 1984, the Vertavo String Quartet is now established as one of theleading European string quartets, and since then they have collaborated withartists like Jean-Yves Thibaudet, Paul Lewis, and Leif Ove Andsnes. Among themany contemporary composers they have worked with are Ligeti, Adès,Widmann, Nørgård, Edlund and Asheim. The group have received a number ofinternational awards for their recordings which so far have featured amongstothers the music by Bartók (the complete quartets), Schumann, Brahms, Nielsen,Debussy, and Grieg.

The six-movement String Quartet Op. 130 was written between August andNovember 1825 during a rare period of relatively good health in the composer’slater years. Beethoven’s original idea was to have the Grosse Fugue as the finaleof the Op. 130. Only after the Quartet was completed and premiered did he listento the urgings of friends and issue the fugue as a separate composition. He thenwrote a new and more light-hearted finale for the Op. 130 Quartet, a movementwhich turned out to be his very last composition.

The French pianist François Couturier’s solo excursion “Un jour siblanc” is conceived by its maker as the second volume in aplanned trilogy, and an extension of the earlier quartet disc
“Nostalghia”, dedicated to filmmaker Andrei Tarkovsky. Thehighly poetic approach – both in the playing itself and in thereferential and allusive conception – is again evident.
The new album’s starting point is a poem by Arseni Tarkovsky, whichgives the disc its title and atmospheric implications. Thereafter, the musicopens up associatively, making trans-idiomatic improvisationalinterconnections. “I wanted to pay tribute to some great artists Iparticularly like”, says Couturier. These include Johann Sebastian Bach,Arthur Rimbaud, Claude Debussy, Franz Schubert, Toru Takemitsu, JoanMiro, the painters of the Blaue Reiter group and more. Meanwhile, “Lunede miel” quotes liberally from “I Fall In Love Too Easily”... But if standardjazz is a component of this disc it is filtered through the focus of a playersteeped in the European classical and experimental traditions.

In this beautiful duo album by two of Italy’s most creativemusicians, roles are frequently overturned, as lyrical percussionshades into electronics and texture turns to melody.
