Why Manufacturing? Are you a high school or college student trying to decide on a career? Are you a counselor or teacher interested in learning about viable careers for your students? Are you looking for a career change? Are you interested in what goes on in the manufacturing facility in your community? This opportunity is for you!

Given the importance of manufacturing to our regional and state economy, we are excited to celebrate Minnesota Manufacturing Week throughout the South Central region. On the “Tour of Manufacturing” you’ll be able to see fi rsthand how manufacturing works. If you’ve never stepped foot inside a manufacturing facility, you’re sure to learn and enjoy seeing all that goes into making the products we use.

Manufacturers are concerned about fi nding qualifi ed workers when the economy improves and as older workers retire. The purpose of the “Tour of Manufacturing” is to increase interest in manufacturing careers, to educate the general public about what manufacturing is really like, and to dispel thoughts that all jobs are going overseas and are dirty, boring or dangerous. Due to rapid innovations in technology, many manufacturers have found creative uses for robotics and automation to produce higher quality products, at a faster pace than ever before. Manufacturers need skilled workers who can work with leading edge technology. Like other industries, they need some of the best and brightest to choose careers in manufacturing.

If you’re looking to experience cutting edge innovation, potential career opportunities for yourself or your children, or just curious about the products being produced in your community, come on the Tour of Manufacturing! You can stop at one or two companies during your busy Saturday schedule, or make a whole day of it and visit them all. You will be amazed by all that is happening in South Central Minnesota.

Gearing up for the Future with Strong Manufacturing in South Central, MinnesotaManufacturing is the backbone of Minnesota’s economy, thanks to its strength, versatility and innovation. According to data from the Bureau of Economic Analysis, manufacturing contributed nearly $36 billion and represented 13.3 percent of Minnesota’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) in 2010. What’s more, manufacturing exports brought more than $17.2 billion into the Minnesota economy in 2010. With $16.5 billion in total payroll/wages in 2010, manufacturing also accounts for about 14 percent of total payroll in the state, according to data from the Minnesota Department of Employment and Economic Development (DEED). In our region, manufacturing comprises almost 23 percent of total payroll in the nine counties of South Central Minnesota (Blue Earth, Brown, Faribault, Le Sueur, Martin, Nicollet, Sibley, Waseca and Watonwan) and 17 percent of total payroll/wages in the Greater Mankato Metropolitan Area (including Blue Earth and Nicollet counties).

Gearing up for a Career in Manufacturing Today, more than ever before, we are looking at ways to keep good jobs in our communities and attract new businesses, which will add more high skill, high wage jobs for our citizens. We know that a strong manufacturing sector is essential to our local, regional and state economy. We also know that many people don’t have a clear understanding of the opportunities available at our local companies today. Many young people haven’t had the opportunity to explore the many career opportunities that exist in the Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics areas or haven’t been inside many current manufacturing facilities. We hope the Tour of Manufacturing can spur interest and excitement to those looking to fi nd a new career opportunity in the exciting world of manufacturing.

Did you know…• One of every fi ve employees (18%) in South Central Minnesota works in manufacturing.• 18,303 people work in South Central’s manufacturing companies, making it the third largest employment sector of our

economy, behind education and health services and trade, transportation and utilities (see pie chart). • Manufacturing has the highest average annual wages of any of the industry sectors in South Central Minnesota, at $41,548 in

2010. • Manufacturing wages were 23.5 percent higher than the total of all industries in South Central Minnesota.• Area manufacturing facilities are great places to work; they are clean, bright and have very amazing high tech equipment.• Many manufacturers are seeking high skilled, innovative employees for a variety of positions, including accountants, sales

directors, engineers, quality control specialist and plant maintenance staff.• The trend of many production jobs being “outsourced” to other countries is now coming back to our local communities due

to the quality workforce that we offer. This is referred to as “homesourcing.”• There are a large number of projected retirements in the manufacturing sector, which opens up many career opportunities for

younger generations.• In Minnesota each manufacturing job supports another 1.3 jobs elsewhere in the economy, through supplier purchases and

employee spending.

If you are interested in pursuing a manufacturing related career, there are many training and job opportunities available to you in South Central Minnesota. For more information, go to minnesotaworks.net and iseek.org or stop and visit your local Minnesota WorkForce Center in Mankato, New Ulm or Fairmont.

Gearing up for ChangeLooking ahead, we know we need to continue to nurture innovation and entrepreneurism throughout our region, state and nation in order to maintain a high quality of life. The world of manufacturing is changing fast, as are our educational needs, and our whole society. Therefore, we must embrace local and global changes and work creatively to keep a manufacturing sector in our region. While we can’t predict the future, there are steps we can all take to advance manufacturing:• Say thank you to local business leaders and their employees that are working hard every day to be more effective and effi cient

than ever before.• Let business leaders know that we appreciate what they do for our communities. • Purchase their products.• Involve them in community initiatives.• Expose our children and young adults to career opportunities in manufacturing and help them develop the skills they need to

be successful.

Enjoy your manufacturing tours onOctober 29!

THIN FILM TECHNOLOGY

HISTORYThin Film Technology Corp. (TFT), was founded in 1979 by a Japanese company called Susumu, and has been using thin fi lm to manufacture electronic components ever since. In December of 2009 the employees bought the company from the Japanese. TFT is now 80% employee owned, with the remaining 20% owned by a small group of local people.

WHAT IS THIN FILM?People oft en ask what we do here, and what is thin fi lm? We put very thin layers of diff erent materials on very thin fl at ceramic plates called substrates. Those layers are the thin fi lm. Usually the layers are metals such as nickel, chrome, or copper. Someti mes the layers are other

materials similar to glass. The process of applying the metal uses some interesti ng equipment involving ion beams, vacuum chambers and some very strong magnets. The layers are so thin that you would have to stack up hundreds of them to have the thickness of a single human hair. Then we cut fi ne patt erns into the fi lms with photo lithography, etching equipment, and lasers to create ti ny circuits that are cut up into individual chips that our customers use to build circuit boards for their products.

OUR EMPLOYEESThe company is 16 employees, each with a variety of skills necessary to operate a high technology company. We have mechanical, chemical, electrical, process and product development

engineers. We have people doing technical sales, customer service, shipping, scheduling, accounti ng, computer systems, and human relati ons. As you can imagine, everyone wears multi ple hats. OUR BUSINESSTFT develops, manufactures, and sells high speed electronic components for a global market. Our products are used in notebook computers, automobiles, microwave

towers, space vehicles, electronic test equipment, medical devices, and many more electronic applicati ons. We combine a technology called “thin fi lm” with our innovati ve development and manufacturing methods to provide our customers with cutti ng edge components that have superior performance and reliability.

COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENTIn 2000 TFT had a very outstanding year, and wanted to do something for the local community that has been so good to us. TFT made a $1,000,000 donati on to the Mankato Area Foundati on to establish a fund to support educati on in science, engineering, and technology in the local community. Since then more than $200,000 has gone to local schools, colleges and universiti es for that purpose. Driving Directi ons:From Highway 14 in N.
