Chapter 1 Routine Maintenance Overview

1.1 Purpose of Routine Maintenance

Reliable running of the BTS depends on effective routine maintenance. The aim of

such maintenance is to detect and solve problems in time.

This chapter describes the contents of routine maintenance and the correct operation

procedures, thus providing the basic methods and reference basis of routine

maintenance for users in deciding local office maintenance solutions.

1.2 Routine Maintenance Classification

1.2.1 Classification by Implementing Methods

I. Conventional maintenance

To observe, test and analyze the equipment performance and operating conditions by

means of normal maintenance.

II. Unconventional maintenance

To check whether the equipment performance has degraded by observing, testing

and analyzing it in artificially-created special conditions.

For example, to avoid alarm system fault, the maintenance personnel can deliberately

create some faults and check whether the alarm system can generate reports

correctly.

1.2.2 Classification by Period Length

I. Unscheduled maintenance

Maintenance tasks are incurred by equipment fault and network adjustment.

For example, the maintenance operations required at the time of user complaint,

equipment damage and line fault are unscheduled. In addition, problems found and

recorded in routine maintenance are also one of the triggering factors of unscheduled

maintenance operations.

II. Daily routine maintenance

Maintenance operations conducted every day, which help the maintenance personnel

keep track of equipment running conditions and solve problems in time.

When a problem is found in daily maintenance, please record in detail the exact

physical position where it occurs and describe it in detail, so that maintenance

operations can be conducted in time to avoid bigger trouble.

III. Periodical routine maintenance

Maintenance operations conducted regularly, which help the maintenance personnel

keep track of the long-time performance of the equipment.

Periodical routine maintenance includes quarterly and yearly maintenance.

maintenance personnel may modify the list of items in this record according to the

actual conditions of the local office, and compile several sheets of records into a

2.2 BTS Routine Maintenance Instructions

2.2.1 Weekly Maintenance Instructions

Maintenance item Operation instructions Reference standard

Check the machine room for any environment alarmincluding power supply, fire andsmoke alarms.

Everything should be normal. Noalarm appears.

Environment conditionCheck the antitheft net, doorsand windows, and other facilities in the equipmentroom.

The facilities including antitheftnet, doors and windows ought tobe intact.

Temperature conditionObserve the thermometer indication in the equipmentroom.

It is normal that theenvironmental temperature in

equipment room is 15®C~30 ®C,otherwise it is abnormal

Humidity conditionObserve the hygrometer indication in the equipmentroom.

It is normal if the environmentalhumidity in equipment room is40% ~ 65%, otherwise it isabnormal.

Dustproof condition

Observe equipment housing,

equipment interior, floor anddesktop.

All items should be clean withoutany visible dust attaching. Thenthe dustproof condition is good. If any item is not up to thestandard, then the dustproof condition is bad.

Indoor air conditioner running status

Check whether it is normallyrunning and whether therefrigeration function is good.

The indication of thethermometer is consistent withthe temperature set and therefrigeration system works.

Board running statusObserve whether indicators of all boards are normal.

2.2.2 Monthly Maintenance Instructions


Call Test

Use a mobile station toperform call test with another one cooperating beside theBSC, and observe whether calls are normal over allchannels.

There should be no noises,interruptions or crosstalk.

Check the runningstatus of battery sets

Check whether there is liquidleakage regarding the battery,or the connection is loose.

Check the grounding,lightning arrester andpower supply systems

Check whether the groundingsystem and lightning

protection system are workingnormally, whether theconnection is reliable,whether the power supplysystem is working normallyand whether there is anyscorch for the lighteningarrester.

Make sure the signal lightningarrester, power supplylightning arrester, antennaand feeder lightning arrester are in good condition.

Check the workingstatus of antenna and

feeder system

Check whether there isstanding wave alarm, whether there is deviation of antennasupport, and whether the

waterproofness of the feeder line is good.

Check whether there isstanding wave alarm from

CDU.

Check the runningconditions of secondary power supply boards

See whether they areoperating normally

No alarm.

2.2.3 Quarterly Maintenance Instructions


Primary power check

Measure the output voltageand the voltage of eachbattery, and check the agingof DC power cable.

Output voltage <-43.5V

Battery voltage error < 0.3V

Check runningconditions of fan

Check whether the fan runsnormally or whether there arealarms

No alarm

Road testUse the testing mobile stationto test the switch-over function and the coverage.

VSWR test Check the CDU VSWR alarmindicator

Test whether the transmittingpower is normal.

Check alarmcollecting device

Humidity, temperature, firealarm etc.

2.2.4 Yearly Maintenance Instructions


Check runningconditions of channel

Use a mobile station to testthe communication conditionsof respective channels.Observe whether there arecall drop, call interruption,noise and single-sidedcommunication, and makerecord for future reference.

Cabinet cleannessTools: vacuum cleaner,alcohol, towel etc.

Set strict operationregulations to avoidmis-touching switch or power supply accidentally.

Check base stationoutput power

Measure TRX transmittingpower.

Check whether it is consistentwith the BSC setting.

Earth resistance testand grounding cablecheck

1. Measure earth resistancewith an earth resistancemeter.

2. Examine whether theconnectors of respectivegrounding cables are looseand check their agingcondition.

Check the waterproof conditions of theconnectors andlightning groundingclips

Check the external part or untie the insulating tape tohave a check

Reseal it with the samematerial!

Check the firmness of antenna and tower topamplifier and thetilting angle of theantenna

1. Screw up the nut againwith a wrench.

2. Use an angle meter tocheck the titling angle.

Do not apply too much forcewhen screwing up the nutwith the wrench.
