A Problem of perception

There have always been verses of Holy Scripture that have confused Bible commentators. Two verses in the Gospel of Saint John are an example of this. “Now after two days he departed thence, and went into Galilee. For Jesus himself testified, that a prophet hath no honour in his own country.” (John 4:43 – 44)

Although Jesus was born in Bethlehem, His parents made their home in Nazareth of Galilee. That’s where Jesus grew up and it would be totally natural for Him to refer to Galilee as His homeland. The question that comes to mind is, “why return to His homeland, when He knows that a prophet

wouldn’t have any honor in such a place?” The text clearly states that he went to Galilee “for” or “because” He knew that a prophet had no honor in his own homeland.

Apparently, He headed for Galilee because of the atmosphere of hate that the Pharisees had brought against Him. We see that by Jesus returning to Galilee, the chance of a confrontation with the Pharisees was pretty slim in a place where He was thought of as just the son of Joseph and Mary. They’d heard that Jesus did miracles in Jerusalem during the Passover Feast and they wanted some of this power to come to them. But, they made it clear that they weren’t going to honor Jesus, the person, but Jesus could reduce the chances of a premature confrontation leading to His death at the hands of the Pharisees.

The 4th chapter in John shows us a problem of perception that hampers maturity in the Christian life. It’s a condition brought on by a false idea of who Jesus Christ really is.

This is the account of an official, a nobleman, most likely a Jew who served as a royal officer to Herod, whose son was

seriously ill, the Greek translation describes his condition as “at the point of death” – it literally says that the nobleman’s son was in imminent danger of dying.

This man comes to Jesus, believing that only a miracle will save his son, and that Jesus is the miracle worker. He approaches Jesus and begs Him to come to his home and pray for his son. The sick child’s father committed at least two errors that stand out as an important lesson for us.

First, he took for granted that in order for Jesus to cure the boy, He’d have to travel from Cana to Capernaum and be at the boy’s bedside.

Second, he was convinced that Christ’s power couldn’t go beyond death. He had to come now because the child was at the point of death. If the son dies before the healer arrives, all would be lost. This was the man’s faith.

Here’s a great example of why I prefer the King James Version over modern translations. John 4:48 reads, Jesus therefore said to him, “Unless you see signs and wonders you will not believe.” This may have seemed harsh and unsympathetic

to the worried father, but Jesus was addressing that remark to more than just him.

The King James Version gives us a more accurate translation of the Greek, “unless ye see signs and wonders, ye will not believe” so our attention is drawn to the plural form of “you.” If Jesus had been speaking to the father only, he would have said, “unless thou.” The second person plural tells us that the father and everyone else in Galilee had no personal faith in the person of Jesus if they didn’t personally witness a sign or wonder. Theirs was a faith that had to see before it could believe. Having an immature faith robs the Christian of many privileges that come from the hand of God. Instead of looking for something sensational to bring about faith, the rebuke from Jesus shows what Faith really should be; trust in the Word of God.

The father is looking for a sign. He wants Jesus to touch his sick son and bring about the miracle, but Jesus doesn’t give him the sign he wanted, he gave him a chance to have Faith in the Son of God. The immediate need of the sick son wasn’t the family’s

only need, and Jesus saw to it that the condition of the father’s soul was taken care of first. Jesus said, “go your son lives.” The miracle had taken place and the man had to believe the Word that came from Jesus. The man’s faith that had once rested on a miracle is now made to rest on the Word of God.

The text ends with the fact that the son was healed from the moment that Jesus spoke the

words to the father. The result of this miracle isn’t just the restoration of the boy’s health but the secondary and possibly greatest miracle is that the entire household came to believe in Jesus, in the Living Word of God. The Faith that we must learn from Jesus Christ is Faith that accepts the Word of God and believes without needing signs and wonders.
