ARE AZIMUTHING SHIPS DIFFERENT?
• Yes, they are! • Safe and efficient handling of a ship with azimuthing
propulsion compared to a conventional vessel requires a different set of – knowledge, – skills and – competences
• Why?

AZIMUTHING PROPULSION
• Azimuthing thrusters/propulsion is still new – Introduced in 1950s primarily to smaller ships
• First systems were mechanical • Most systems today are mechanical – Output power limited generally to below 5 MW • Due to heat generation in gears

AZIPOD PROPULSION
• In 1980s ABB Marine developed diesel electric system – the Azipod® (registered trademark of ABB)
• Electric Azipod can deliver higher power than mechanical systems – Up-to 25 MW – Azimuthing propulsion for large ships was possible
• First Azipod cruise ship installation 1998 – M/V Carnival Elation

CRUISE SHIP AZIMUTHING PROPULSION
• In 1998 best utilization of the system was not clear – For example, Carnival Elation, and several following
vessels, were equipped with only one (1) azimuthing lever to control two (2) Azipods
– Lots of the benefits of the system could not be reached with this setup

AZIPOD PROPULSION
• There was very limited training, if any • Captains needed to develop their own azimuthing
ship handling methods – Some of the methods were correct • Others not so good
• These methods were passed on to other Masters

TO FULLY UTILIZE AZIPODS
• One has to have good understanding of – Technical system • Capabilities of Azipod propulsion • Principles thrust vector-thinking • Bias-setting of Azipods
– Nautical operations • Recommended operating methods are to be promoted
– Others should be dismissed

AZIPOD MANEUVERING
• Conventional ship handling methods are not applicable
• Azipod methods give broader envelope for safe and efficient maneuvering
• Azipod ships are (much) more maneuverable • Azipod ships have brakes – i.e. stopping distance up-to 50% shorter

IMPROVED UTILIZATION IMPROVED EFFICIENCY
• Both Nautical and Technical knowledge, skills and competence are required to fully utilize the system
• Results from Azipod specific operational training: – Improved • Safety • Efficiency and total economy • Passenger comfort/satisfaction
– Lowered propulsion system maintenance needs
