A new Deputy Head of School for the new year A message from Dr Neill

As Head leading this one school, there is a need to have an individual alongside me who can deputise with an eye across the entire School from ages 3 -18. I am pleased to let you know that the Council of Governors have approved that Mr Tony Richards become Deputy Head of School with immediate effect.

Mr Richards will continue in his role as Head of Nursery to Junior Schools and, through increased employment of some members of staff in the Early Years and Junior Departments to release some of his time, will work more closely alongside me in every department of the School - visiting lessons and meeting with teaching staff, department and senior managers and business support staff. Mr Richards will be able to represent me at every level in school and across our wider Clifton High community.

This shared management and joint vision at Head and Deputy Head level, while continuing to work closely with Mr Cowper, our Director of Operations, will enable better communication with staff and support a more consistent approach throughout the School. It will allow both Mr Richards and myself greater visibility and contact with the pupils, staff and the rest of our community on a daily basis.

I am sure you will join me in congratulating Mr Richards on his new role as we look forward to the rest of 2013.

Mr Tony Richards and Dr Alison Neill with Mr Guy Cowper, Director of Operations

Entrance Examinations

Well done to everyone who got here to sit the entrance examination on Saturday; we are looking forward to seeing all those who are sitting theirs this weekend. We have a busy few weeks with a record number of applications for academic, sport and music scholarships which is exciting. The high numbers of applications for Y7 in September mean that, for the first time, we have a real chance of seeing two boys groups for subjects studied separately in Y7-9 . This is a significant milestone for Clifton High and something to be very proud of.

Key Stage 1

We welcome Miss Sheffield and Miss Ware to Classes 2M and 1L respectively. Both are nearing the end of their teacher training and tell us they are looking forward to meeting our parents and working with our children.

Enhanced Learning

Please note that the Learning Support Department has been renamed as the Enhanced Learning Department. This department provides a variety of opportunities for our pupils in order to assist with a range of learning needs and includes support for those with English as an Additional Language and for Gifted and Talented pupils.

We welcome two new staff members to the EL department this term: Miss Annie Griffiths as Learning Support Assistant with English as an Additional Language and Mrs Kate Pegram as a part-time School Counsellor. Miss Griffiths and Mrs Pegram are so new that we don’t have pictures of them yet to show you but we will share one with you very soon.

Futures and Skills & UCAS

As some of you will be aware, Mrs Giles who manages our Futures and Skills programme and our UCAS applications process is currently on maternity leave. While she is away, Mr Goldsmith is your point of contact for any enquiries or matters pertaining to Futures and Skills for students in Y12 and below.

Mr Psarros is managing UCAS matters for Y13 students this year.

Fundraising news

Y10 and the CHS staff raised a wonderful £113.65 for BRACE with a shared charity donations Christmas card last term.

The Junior School has also recently contributed £200 to the RNLI - thank you to everyone for their generous donations!

Christmas in Cologne

Twenty pupils of various ages travelled to Cologne at the end of last term and took advantage of the excellent opportunity to practice their German and get a feel for German culture. Pupils visited the beautiful Christmas markets, the Cathedral with its amazing view of the city and the exciting Lindt chocolate museum. After such an enjoyable trip the pupils certainly had a lot to tell and you can read their full report online.

Sports photographs

A reminder that order forms for the excellent sports team photographs which were taken last term have been given out to the pupils involved. Please note that the forms should be returned to Fraser Portraits (not School) and that the closing date is the 1st of February.

Results and achievements

Look out in future bulletins for fixture results to follow our sports teams as they represent CHS at home and away.

We already saw the first swimming gala of 2013 against Red Maids’ with nearly 100 students taking part. There were some very close races and we are delighted that CHS won both the Y4 and Y6 age groups and the gala overall. Well done!

Special mentions are also due to Tom Ball in Y9 who represented Bristol Schools in the Avon Schools Cross Country Championships at Blaise Castle and Matt Bray in Y12 who swam in the Scottish National SC Championships before Christmas. Well done, Tom and Matt - keep us up to date with your achievements!

Parenting course

We are pleased to draw your attention to a five-week parenting course run by members of Christ Church. Sessions will be held at Christ Church School on a Wednesday evening from 20th Feb to 20th March at 7.45pm. The course has been running for several years now and is open to any parent from the local area and beyond.

Course information:

The course runs over five evening sessions with a key element being that participants learn from each other and share together their experiences.

The course is aimed at parents of children aged from 2 to 12 and covers topics on:

- How do families work ? - What do our children need?

- Where do we set the boundaries? - Handling anger

Plus an optional evening on how to grow your child's faith and spirituality.

Each evening begins with a talk and then there is plenty of opportunity for participants to discuss and share experiences in groups with parents who have the same age children.

The course, whilst based on Christian principles, is very helpful for any parent with or without a Christian faith or church background.

It is essential that you book a place on this course. There is a small charge of £7.50 per person for the course, which covers the course booklet and refreshments.

Please contact the church office by 1st Feb 2013 to book your place: Telephone 0117 9736524 or email [email protected]
