Whatever it is that you want to aid your eyes to see, there’s a pair of Canon binoculars that does the jobbetter than any other binoculars in the world. Opticaltechnology borrowed from Canon’s renowned EFlenses, Image Stabilization technology adapted fromCanon’s industry-leading video camcorders, and acommitment to quality and utility that has been a Canonhallmark for decades all contribute to the superiority ofthese binoculars.

Designed to BeUsed Your WayCanon binoculars are built withcomfort in mind. Compact andlightweight, they can be usedfor long periods of time, and can be carried and heldcomfortably. All models areergonomically designed andcome with non-slip coatings foreasier gripping. Certain models, including the 7x42 A WP arefully waterproof, while othersare "all-weather" for use in a variety of climate conditions. All models also featureenvironmentally friendly, lead-free glass.

renowned Image Stabilizertechnology from its high-performancecamcorder family and adapted itfor its IS binoculars as well.

The Image Stabilizer systemfeatures a Vari-Angle Prism (VAP)that instantly and preciselyadjusts the visual path through thebinoculars to maintain a perfectlysteady image. Whether you are ona moving boat chasing a school offish, walking through the foresttracking a pair of deer, or trying tofollow a fast-moving sailboat race, simply switching on Canon's ImageStabilizer get you the sharp, clearand steady images you are after.

The VAP Image StabilizationSystem is available in Canonbinoculars with 10x, 12x, 15x and18x magnification. Two sensorsdetect vertical and horizontalmotion, and a micro-processoradjusts the Vari-Angle Prisms inthe right and left telescopes. Eachprism is expanded in a bellowsmotion to instantly adjust therefraction angle of the image. The result is high-magnificationand a clear, steady image at thepush of a button, without the needfor any additional equipment, suchas a tripod. Now, you are free to

follow your always on the move, outdoor subjects regardless of theconditions you are faced with.

You know that the Canon name assures high quality, technological leadership, and thoughtful ergonomics.Do you need to know anything else about choosing a pair of binoculars? Well, just a little bit.

Clear All Around? Wide field-of-view has become apopular feature and some models onthe market offer width at the cost ofimage distortion as your eye movesaway from the center of the image.Focus your binoculars on a simplesurface, like a brick wall, and look atthe edges of the circle to make surethe image is not distorted.

What do thesenumbers mean —15x50, 8x25?The two numbers used to describeany pair of binoculars are theirmagnification — 8x, 12x, 15x andso on — and the diameter of theirobjective lenses — 25mm, 36mm,50mm, and so on. The larger thefirst number is, the larger the objectwill appear to be in the objectivelens. For instance, if you use a 10xlens and look at an object that is100 yards away, it appears to bethe same size as an object locatedjust 10 yards away.

The second number, the size of theobjective lens, is important becausethe larger the objective lens, themore light it can admit for brighter, more detailed images, and thebetter suited they will be for low-light situations.

What makes an image brighter insome binocularsthan in others?A number of optical factors affectthe brightness of an image, includingthe amount of incidental light that isreflected by the lens. An uncoatedlens will reflect away as much as 8%of the incidental light, significantlydimming the image. Canon's SuperSpectra Coating prevents thatreflection. Other factors include:

Exit PupilThe size of the image that emergesat the binoculars' eyepiece is the exit pupil. For binoculars intendedmainly for daytime use, the idealexit pupil size is between 2.5 and3mm, about the size of the pupilin a typical viewer's eye in daylight. For low light, a larger exit pupil maybe more desirable.

Sharp Edges or Blurs?Compare binoculars by focusing on a very sharp edge, such as starsin the night sky or the lettering on a sign. Those images should beabsolutely crystal clear with anybinoculars you are using.

True Image or Funhouse Effect?Focus on the parallel edges of a tallbuilding and look to see whether thelines seem to warp near the image'soutside edges. They should remainperfectly parallel.

Objective Element SizeSimply put, this is the size of thefront element. The larger the lensin front of the binoculars, the more light it can admit.

Twilight CoefficientThe rules change in low light.Magnification becomes a moreimportant factor in how much detail you can see than othermeasurements might. If you're goingto be using binoculars in day and lowlight situations, you should use ahigher magnification than you wouldfor standard daylight viewing.

How can I judgeimage quality? When purchasing a pair of binocularsthat is right for you, you will want tocompare some of the key featuresand attributes of each model. Someof these attributes include:

One Image or Two? If the parallel tubes of the binocularsare not perfectly aligned with eachother, due to manufacturing defect oraccident, you'll see two similar butdistinct images. Do not buy thesebinoculars. They can't be repaired, and the more you use them, the moredistracting these problems will be.

True Colors or Mud?Focus the binoculars on a whiteobject, and compare the whitenessyou see in other binoculars.Especially at higher magnifications, colors can merge and become farless distinct than they are to yournaked eye. This is called chromaticaberration, and is corrected byCanon engineers through the use of a UD lens from Canon's SLR EFlenses for the highest magnificationmodels, and with Super SpectraCoating on all lenses.

Field-of-view is simply the arc thatyou can achieve at a given moment. The real field-of-view gets narroweras the binoculars' magnificationincreases. The apparent field-of-view is a product of the magnificationtimes the real field-of-view, so that10x binoculars with a five-degreefield-of-views seem to have a 50-degree sweep. Canon's line ofbinoculars is engineered withgenerous fields-of-view rangingfrom 45 to 67 degrees. This makesit easier for you to locate andproperly follow your subject.

1. Look through the binoculars with both eyes, and adjust them for the spacing of your own eyes (with the IS series, use the eyepiecebarrels). The instrument is correctly adjusted once both viewsmerge into one circle.

Next, adjust the diopter adjustment rings to your eyesight. This is an important step, as each person has different eyesight.

2. With your right eye closed, look through the left eyepiece with your left eye. Using the focusing ring, adjust the focus on a stationary, detailed object.

3. Now, close your left eye and lookthrough the right eyepiece. If the object is in focus, the diopter wasadjusted correctly. Otherwise, use the right diopter adjustment ring to readjust the focusing.

4. By adjusting the focusing ring each time you look at an object, the diopter will also automatically focus.

Please note that eye spacing and diopter adjustment is different for each person. Another person would have to adjust the eye spacing and diopter again.

For eyeglass wearersIf you look through the binoculars whilewearing eyeglasses, your eye will befurther away from the eyepieces, andscenes will gradually shade off at theedges. To prevent this, use the foldawayrubber eyepiece rings if available.

With the IS series, you can simplylengthen the eye cups by squeezingthe edges of the eye cups.

Remembering the readings ofthe diopters will make it easierto readjust the binoculars aftersomeone else has used them.
