Sport in the sun - Malta Rally 2012 Half-term saw 46 pupils take off to sunny Malta to take part in the Malta Rally annual tournament with an intense
week of coaching and matches against teams from across the UK and Malta. All the CHS teams did us proud: in
Netball, Y10 were runners up and Y9 emerged victorious in their tournaments. Olivia Harvey received the coaches’
individual award for the most focused, hardworking and committed player during the rally. The girls’ hockey team
beat a boys’ team 2-0 to finish 3rd place in their tournament and all of the first team said they will strive to play just
as well for the rest of the season! The boys’ football team also played brilliantly and were thrilled to get exclusive
coaching experience with the Maltese national team assistant coach. After five matches in as many days, the boys
only just missed out on the final on a goal difference. This fantastic sports trip was one which the pupils will never
forget. Top quote? “This was the best school trip ever, please can we do this again next year?!” They even
managed to squeeze in Halloween celebrations! Check the website for more photos and all the results.

Taster Day guests
experienced Craig Figes’
(Captain of the Great Britain
Water Polo Team) coaching
first hand recently. Mr Figes
will be back soon with
sessions for our junior pupils
and a water polo club will
start next term in our pool!
The Bike Donation day in October was a huge success and we received a message from the charity: “To everyone who took the time and trouble to donate a bike THANK YOU from Life Cycle UK!”
Lily Hanks in Y7 attended a very enjoyable and successful Dance Festival during the half-term. She gained five medals in total: one Gold, two Silver and two Bronze - well done Lily!

The strong
start to the
rugby season
continued as
the Y7 and 8
boys won 57-0
against Beechen Cliff School.
Congratulations to the U12-13s
for this much deserved result! See
the website for match details and
team photographs.
Audiences have
recently enjoyed
excellent musical
entertainment:
Y1 presented a
concert of
seaside themed song, rhyme and
dance and talented musicians from
Y3-9 gave a delightful selection of
performances at a music soirée.
Issy Press competed
in the Wellington
Age Groups U13
Girls Sabre fencing
competition at
Wellington School
on 21st October. Issy came second in
both her qualifying rounds and the final
against a Millfield girl was very close
fought but Issy won 10:9 for Gold in her
first ever Sabre competition. Well done!
Drop off, Drop in, Pop in, Pick up sessions – 29th November
Our Early Years and Junior children learn so much and work hard every day and their class rooms are filled with wonderful displays and evidence of daily learning. To allow children to share their work, of which they are proud, we introduced “Drop In” sessions last year.
Our first “Drop In” sessions this year will take place on Thursday 29th November. Parents will be welcome to visit their child’s class at the times shown below. The teaching day will continue as normal for children who may not have a grown up visitor. Please understand that this will not be a time for you to meet with teachers, or visit other classes. It is anticipated that we will run more ‘Drop In’ sessions so don’t worry if you can’t make this one.
Foundation Stage and Key Stage 1 (Nursery – Year 2): 8.30 – 9.00am 3.00 – 3.30pm
Key Stage 2 (Years 3 – 6): 8.30 – 8.50am 3.10 – 3.30pm (to fit with assembly and lessons)
New link with Firebrands Hockey for CHS boys Clifton High takes pride in creating club links with other organisations for both boys and girls. The latest link to be made is for boys’ hockey with local club Firebrands. Senior Hockey Coach Mike Leatt is already an established member of the Firebrands coaching set up and now we can offer extra curricular hockey to boys in Y3-13.
Information regarding training times for different age groups is on www.firebrandshockeyclub.co.uk. Firebrands would like to encourage CHS boys of any level of ability to be a part of their club.
Mr Leatt will also be running a boys’ hockey club next term for senior boys which will help promote even more participation and competition for boys’ hockey.
Children in Need This year Blue Peter is teaming up with Children in Need for their 2012 appeal and asking us to ‘Go Pyjamas! Get involved.’
On 16th November, children and pupils throughout the school are invited to come to school wearing their pyjamas and dressing gowns over their clothes (no onesies for Nursery-Y6 please; too tricky when nature calls!). For the privilege of wearing non-school uniform, children should bring a £1 donation for the Children in Need and Blue Peter appeal.
Children in Years 2-4 should wear their sports kit under their pyjamas so they are ready for action in the afternoon games session.
Senior pupils in Y7-13 are asked to remember that pyjamas can only be worn over other clothing.

The Alumni Autumn Lunch and AGM was held on Saturday 20th October, attended by almost 100. Year group
reunions had a great time catching up and the after lunch speaker was Penny Porter, who left CHS in 1996 and has had a successful career as a physiotherapist in elite sport.
Y10-13 Art and
Textiles students
went to visit the
National Gallery
and ‘Hollywood
Costumes’
exhibition at the V&A Museum while
English A level students saw Tis a Pity
She’s a Whore at the Bristol Old Vic
and are going to The Woman in Black
at Theatre Royal Bath in December.
The CHS Student Robotics team went to Southampton University to kick start the 2012-13 competition and
an exciting engineering visit saw four students visit our link company St Gobain-Rencol to discuss a challenge to develop a novel use for tolerance rings. Two exciting projects to follow!
UCAS deadlines reminder 15th January is the UCAS deadline and sixth form parents and students are reminded that our internal deadline, including Dr Neill adding her personal reference, is the last day of November. Parents can contact Mrs Giles by email if they have any concerns.
Charity Fundraising
Friday 26th October was the Pears and Percival Charity Day. Fundraising activities included limbo dancing and a sponsored silence as well as a mufti day for the Junior and Senior Schools. We raised a fantastic £220.14 for Wallace and Gromit’s Children’s Foundation and £151.99 for Help for Heroes.
