    Hail Holy Queen

The Church teachesthat the Immaculate Vir-gin, by a special privilege, was taken up bodyand soul into heav-

enly glory at theend of her earthlylife. "The Assumptionis the culmination ofthe struggle whichinvolved Mary's gen-erous love in the re-demption of human-ity and is the fruit ofher unique sharing inthe victory of the

    Cross."Mary, unlike Christians

who die in God's grace, was taken up into theglory of heaven with herbody. The Second VaticanCouncil affirms that theImmaculate Virgin "wastaken up body and soulinto heavenly glory,

when her earthly life was over." The dogma of the Assumption affirms that Mary's bodywas glorified after her death. In fact, while for other human beings the resurrection of thebody will take place at the end of the world, for Mary the glorification of her body was an-ticipated by a special privilege.

On 1 November 1950, in defining the dogma of the Assumption, Pius XII avoided using theterm "resurrection. He affirmed the elevation of Mary's body to heavenly glory, declaringthis truth a "divinely revealed dogma". The Assumption of the Blessed Virgin has always

been part of the faith of the Christian people who, by affirming Mary's entrance into heav-enly glory, have meant to proclaim the glorification of her body.

The first trace of belief in the Virgin's Assumption can be found in the apocryphal ac-counts entitled Transitus Mariae, whose origin dates to the second and third centuries. These are popular and sometimes romanticized depictions, which in this case, however, pickup an intuition of faith on the part of God's People. Later, there was a long period of grow-ing reflection on Mary's destiny in the next world. This gradually led the faithful to be-lieve in the glorious raising of the Mother of Jesus, in body and soul, and to the institu-tion in the East of the liturgical feasts of the Dormition and Assumption of Mary.

Belief in the glorious destiny of the body and soul of the Lord's Mother after her death

spread very rapidly from East to West, and has been widespread since the 14th century. Inour century, on the Eve of the definition of the dogma it was a truth almost universallyaccepted and professed by the Christian community in every corner of the world. John Paul II

There is much to say about the role of Mary in Scripture. We can talk about the announce-ment, invitation to Mary to be the portal through which the Divine Savior was to enter the worldat the Annunciation (Luke 1:28); we can talk about Marys fiather declaration Let i t be wi t h meaccordi ng t o your word(Luke 1:38b); we can talk about Elizabeths proclamation, Blessed areyou among women, and blessed is the f rui t of y our womb.(Luke 1:42) We can discuss the im-age of Mary in the Book of Revelation, where she is depicted as the very face of the Church in theheavenly realm; or we can talk about how Jesus addresses her in the Miracle at Cana account, as

(the context suggests)Eve. (John 2:4) We can even note how, there, she decides that now is thetime for Jesus Messianic ministry to begin. Indeed, an understanding of Johns Gospel as a wholeis essential for understanding the importance of the doctrine of the Assumption.

In the Bread of Life Discourse(John 6:22-71), Jesus repeatedly promises that those who be-come one with him in his Flesh and Blood, on the last day, will be taken up with him in resur-rection. But let us look back to the Prologue of the Gospel. There we read that, The Word[Logos] became flesh, and [to translate literally] pitched his tent among us. (1:14a) Whatdoes this mean? Why is it important that he pitched his tent? Our translations usually read, made his dwelling, or dwelt; but the real implication of the phrase is that the Word setup his tabernacle among us. Note that setting up his tabernacle is linked with his being madeflesh, and his coming into the world. This happens through Mary. For the first nine months of

the Incarnation, Mary is that tabernaclethe tent beneath which Gods unique presence issheltered. Through the Eucharist, we can gain a share in that reality.

Marys relationship to Christ is literally pregnant with symbolism. Christians agree thatChrist is the New Adam, in whom the human race finds a second chance at grace. That makesMary the New Eve. The first time around, Evethe mother of all the livingwas taken outof her man. (Gen. 2:23b) This time, it is the other way around. The New Adam is taken out ofEve at the Ave of the Annunciation. She becomes, not only the mother of all the living, but the mother of the living God, and all who live through him as children, miraculouslyborn through the regenerating power of the Eucharistnot by natural generation nor byhuman choice nor by a mans decision but of God. (John 1:13) Richard H. Bulzacchelli, S.T.L.

haba terminado."

(1:14 a) Qu significaesto?

(Juan 1:13)

2013 Catholic Ministries Annual Appeal Pledge Report

    The Lord Sustains His People

The Catholic Ministries Annual Appeal provides crucial funding to the Dioceseof Joliet. These funds help provide education, ministry and services that sus-tain the people of God. From Catholic Charities to Catholic Schools, to Reli-gious Education, seminarian education and vocations, money donated to theCMAA helps support the work of our diocese.

Bishop Conlon has sent a letter and a campaign brochure to past CMAA con-tributors asking that they consider making a gift to the 2013 Catholic Minis-tries Annual Appeal. We ask our parishioners who receive this mailing to readit carefully and to prayerfully consider a generous gift and/or pledge. Please keep in mind that our parish receives a 50% rebate of all funds re-

ceived over our parish goal. We can then use this money to support our par-ish priorities.
