IPSWICH SOCIETY FILM 23rd January 2017 TRASH (15) US/BRAZIL 2014 Directed by Stephen Daldry, Christian Duurvoort Stephen Daldry co-directs this adaptation of Andy Mulligan’s novel. Two young boys, who live amongst Rio de Janeiro’s rubbish, find a wallet. It doesn’t take long for someone to come looking for the wallet … and them. Also featuring Martin Sheen and Rooney Mara. 114 minutes 6th February 2017 MARSHLAND 4 (15) SPAIN 2014 Directed by Alberto Rodríguez In Andalusía’s coastal wetlands, two police detectives work together like chalk and cheese to catch a serial killer. Great work from the leads, as the duo that just has to learn to get on, and a compelling community portrait as the country emerges from Franco’s shadow; this is a thriller with familiar trappings that nonetheless forges its own peculiar identity. 105 minutes 20th February 2017 ALL THE PRESIDENT’S MEN 4 (15) US 1976 Directed by Alan J. Pakula In 1972 Carl Bernstein and Bob Woodward were Washington Post journalists told to investigate an unusual burglary. They didn’t stop there. Watergate and its consequences became infamous in US politics and led to Richard Nixon’s impeachment and ultimate resignation. Dustin Hoffman is Bernstein, Robert Redford plays Woodward. 132 minutes 6th March 2017 BLANCANIEVES (12) SP/BEL/FR 2012 Directed by Pablo Berger This extraordinary film centres around a woman bullfighter in 1920s Spain, and is a retread of Snow White and the Seven Dwarves in black and white! It is also a silent film, except that its beating heart is the fantastic flamenco music that courses through it, and you will find nothing so inventive in many a month at the movies. 104 minutes 20th March 2017 EX MACHINA (15) US 2015 Directed by Alex Garland Author and screenwriter Alex Garland’s directorial début presents science fiction like no one else. Caleb wins a competition and is invited to stay at his CEO’s mountain retreat. There he meets Ava (played by Alicia Vikander in a towering performance), who is a special breed of free will endowed cyborg. 108 minutes 3rd April 2017 AMOUR 4 (12A) FR/GER/ÖST 2012 Directed by Michael Haneke Jean-Louis Trintignant and Emmanuelle Riva play an ageing couple, one half of whom has to nurse the other through the trials of failing health. Haneke’s characteristically unflinching gaze at the pains of shared existence is also a triumphantly affirmative view of what marital love can mean. 127 minutes 24th April 2017 CAROL 4 (15) US 2015 Directed by Todd Haynes Carol Aird (Cate Blanchett) goes Christmas shopping in 1950s New York City. Shop assistant Thérèse Belivet (Rooney Mara) helps her choose a train set … and more. Oscar ® nominated and a subtle, sumptuous, adaptation of Patricia Highsmith’s novel The Price of Salt, this is also a beautifully nostalgic evocation of its period. 118 minutes 8th May 2017 THE GRUMP (12) FINLAND/ICELAND 2014 Directed by Dome Karukoski Grumpy old man, Nordic humour… one can begin to predict a low-key Victor Meldrew comedy, but not quite. Alongside the ambivalent seam of misanthropic humour, writer-director Karukoski mines a touching core of cross-generational deficiency and reconciliation. 104 minutes 2016 ~ 2017 SEASON WWW.IPSWICHFILMSOCIETY.ORG.UK

19th September 2016nIne (12) Us 2009Directed by rob MarshallA film director (Daniel Day-Lewis) attempts to revive his career with a new film in this extravagant musical remake of Fellini’s Eight and a Half. Marion Cotillard plays his wife, Penélope Cruz his mistress – there are just so many distractions! Also starring Judi Dench, Sophia Loren, Nicole Kidman and Kate Hudson. 113 minutes

17th October 2016sTILL LIFe 4 (12a) UK/ITaLy 2014Directed by Uberto pasoliniEddie Marsan is outstanding in this minutely observed film of British life today. His character, John May, is a conscientious council employee tracing relatives of any deceased who have died alone. John has time for one more case and so meets Kelly, an excellent Joanne Froggatt. 92 minutes

3rd October 2016The weLL-DIGGer’s DaUGhTer (Uncert.) Fr 2011Directed by Daniel auteuilActor-director Auteuil continues his love affair with Pagnol with this remake of the author’s self-directed  1940  version.  The  story  takes  place  in characteristically rustic Provence and concerns a widower’s need to find a home for his unmarried daughter’s baby, when her suitors go off to war. 107 minutes

31st October 2016TheeB (15) Uae/QaTar/JorDan/GB 2014Directed by naji abu nowarIn the declining days of the Ottoman Empire, a pair of Bedouin brothers guide an English officer through the desert in this tellingly played drama, whose majestic vistas belie its intimacy. Imagine Lean’s masterpiece told from the point of view of one of the boys.

100 minutes

14th November 2016The ThIrD Man 4 (pG) UK 1949Directed by Carol reed67  years  on  and  we  present  Reed’s  masterpiece for one night on the big screen – unmissable! Set in Vienna immediately after World War II, the film won an Oscar® for the cinematography. Graham Greene was both novelist and screenwriter. Anton Karas wrote and played that music. 111 minutes

5th December 2016ForCe MaJeUre (15) sV/Fr/nor/DK 2014Directed by ruben ÖstlundA popular European release last year, this story of marital implosion during a family skiing holiday calls to mind the truism that people who do the most shocking things somehow manage to convince themselves that it never happened. In a film all about point of view and evasion of responsibility, Östlund’s ‘stand back and observe’ direction is wholly apt. 120 minutes

19th December 2016LoVe Is sTranGe (15) Us 2015Directed by Ira sachsTwo middle-aged gays, Ben and George, decide to make  their  devoted  partnership  of  almost  40  years official. But marriage in 21st century Manhattan certainly has its challenges – for them and their families. Extremely moving performances from John Lithgow and Alfred Molina. 94 minutes

9th January 2017LeBanon (15) IsraeL 2009Directed by samuel MaozIn Israel, military service meant that young men just out of high school could find themselves in a tank during a shooting war. This is the story of one such tank during the 1982 Lebanese offensive. The director had been there too, and during shooting lost the last bit of shrapnel from his body. 93 minutes !
