Schoology Launches in D156 to Drive Teaching and Learning

Last year, educators of McHenry High School researched and planned for future innovation in education that will encompass the curriculum, instructional methodologies, and technology needed to drive transformative change over the coming years for District #156. As part of that planning, the district

explored adding a district-wide learning management system as a key tool for future teaching and learning in our district. Schoology was determined to be the system for our district and launched in August as the primary platform for curriculum, teaching, learning, and communication. Schoology will provide teachers the tools needed to create time and flexible structure in the classroom to impact all students, especially those unable to attend on a daily basis. Schoology as an LMS has many advantages. Advantages of a District-Wide LMS – Schoology Having a district-wide learning management system will be beneficial in the following ways: ! Schoology will provide a common user experience for students, parents, and staff. ! Schoology provides a common platform for all course information and curricular materials. ! Many universities incorporate an LMS allowing MCHS students to be more prepared for the format of college. ! Schoology will allow staff to evolve more personalized learning methodologies that will help prepare students for college and career, where learning is more self-regulated. ! Schoology can provide features for single-sign on for other major applications utilized by students and staff (Google Drive, Infinite Campus, P4R, Turnitin, etc.) Parents involvement in monitoring their student’s academic progress is vital. Schoology allows parents to have a very transparent view of all their student’s grades and learning materials. Parents who have not yet received the access code for their student’s Schoology information should call the main office at their campus.

Innovation in District 156 As you may know, our board approved a comprehensive framework for an Innovation plan that will take shape over the next several years at McHenry High School. The key elements of the “Vision 156” Innovation Plan are:

! Implement Schoology as a district-wide learning management platform for teachers, students, and parents in 2017-18 school year

! Implement a Digital Literacy Coaching Program to fuel professional learning and collaboration for teachers during the 2017-18 school year.

! Go 1:1 with chromebooks for all students as we open school in 2018-19. This will allow all students to have access to learning materials day and night, anytime and anywhere!

! Continue to advance the development of new and innovative course offerings that lead to 21st century college and career opportunities

! Work to redesign the learning spaces in our schools to facilitate greater collaboration and improved student achievement

As these elements start to come to reality this year and next, we already see the results in student learning. Schoology allows for a one-stop platform to find all learning materials, exchange products with teachers, and give and obtain feedback. Schoology also allows parents to have greater transparency with student academic and class information than ever before. Our Digital Literacy Coaching Program has allowed our teachers to teach and share best practices for integration of technology applications with each other. Building administrators and teachers have also been working to modernize common spaces and media centers for class use and small group collaboration. All of these efforts have been planned to precede the full rollout of chromebooks to all students next year. We look forward to continuing the communication of what 1:1 deployment will look like with parent meetings later in the Spring of 2018.

New Digital Literacy Coaching Program to Support Teachers and Fuel Professional Development!

Last January, our board approved the hiring of teachers to have one release period to serve as instructional coaches for our teaching staff. Our district will now have Digital Literacy Coaches to work with and support teachers. Our new “DLC”s are

East: Leah Vercelli, Jason Myhre, Doug Primus, and Theresa Ancona West: Chris Madson, Cara Vandermyde, Matt Adam, Doug Primus, and Theresa Ancona DLCs will impact the instruction of MCHS in the following six ways.

! Small group Cohorts to meet twice per month (required) during teacher plan periods ! 1 on 1 help for teachers by appointment ! In-class assistance (feedback and/or helping to deliver lessons and try new strategies) ! Lunch & Learn Presentations ! Professional development on inservice and early release days ! Online PD - development of online resources

Goals of the DLC Program:

! All MCHS teachers will participate in a digital literacy coaching group and have the opportunity to access personalized coaching in a one on one environment.

! All MCHS teachers will be able to develop a strong, collaborative, learning relationship with one or more digital literacy coaches in a non-evaluative setting.

! All MCHS teachers will have the ongoing support necessary to create an increasing amount of lessons that skillfully integrate both technology use and literacy strategies.

! All teachers will work with coaches to learn and embed best practices of technology integration.! The practices emphasized in the DLC model will be driven by the ITEACH model, MCHS Literacy Strategies, a technology

framework, and the teachers identified learning targets. ! The DLCs will provide the support needed to assist teachers in the use of Schoology to aide in the construction of common

curriculum. ! The DLC model will be focused on strategies that increase student engagement, motivation, reading comprehension, and

personalized learning.

New Courses Planned for 2018 Course Registration As a central part of the Vision 156 Innovation Plan, MCHS is excited to announce a variety of new courses to offer to students. These courses represent exciting college and career pathways that combine rigorous curricular standards, new instructional methods, state of the art technology, and partnerships with community businesses and civic organizations. The following is a overview of some of these courses that MCHS students will be able to select this coming year: Project Lead the Way: Principles of Biomedical Science This is the first course in a new PLTW pathway designed for students who wish to explore careers in

medicine and healthcare. MCHS will be looking to add future PLTW courses called Human Body Systems (19-20) and Medical Interventions (20-21). Medical Residency As a senior-level capstone course in the new Biomedical Science Program, MCHS students will have a chance to work alongside healthcare professionals in different departments at a local Centegra location and with paramedics at MTFPD stations. Students will have to complete an application process as the program will be limited to 30 students annually. IncubatorEDU Utilizing a national curriculum, MCHS students will work in groups to identify a problem, design, market and pitch a product that meets the needs of consumers. Students will work with area business leaders as “coaches” as they prepare to pitch their work to a panel of judges at the end of the year. Project Lead the Way: Computer Science Principles This course is the second in our growing PLTW Computer Science pathway. Students will advance the skills they learned in previous classes by working to develop expertise in coding, app development, data, and cyber-security. This course is aligned to Advanced Placement and students will be able to take the AP test for computer science. Construction Education This course will provide students with an in-depth learning experience on the many elements of both residential and commercial construction projects. Students will gain knowledge and understanding of the many career options and trades within the construction industry. Redesigned Manufacturing I and II Curriculum Using technology, flipped classroom methods, and expanding industry relationships, the Manufacturing curriculum has been revamped to provide students with more real-world skills that make them career ready after high school. This new curriculum will allow students to choose between machining and welding and pursue various industry certifications to gain future employment.

Newspaper This is the second course of MCHS’ new Journalism program. Students will research and write a variety of journalistic pieces including news features, editorials, opinions, sports stories, and reviews while applying AP style. Students will also acquire other essential skills such as photojournalism, editing, and publishing in web and paper formats.
