    to introduce the past simple

    to practise the listening and reading skills

    Materials: handouts, board, chalk, cassette player, cassette, textbook, activity book, handouts

    Steps of the lesson:

    Activity 1 - warm-up (10 min)

    -Ss complete a crossword and the resulting word isEgypt.

    -Ss talk about the images they can see in their textbooks on page 36; T pre-teaches some of the words

    (coffin, tomb)

    Activity 2 listening (5 min)

    -Ss listen to the recording and read the text from the book

    Activity 4 post listening (15 min)

    -Ss read the text. T writes the new vocabulary on the board

    -Ss will answer some questions based on the text orally:

    Where did Lord Carnarvon and Mr Howard Carter make an exciting discovery?

    What did they find?

    Who was Tutankhamun?How old was Tutankhamun when he got married?

    What is his mask made of?

    -Ss choose from the new vocabulary to fill in the spaces in some sentences given by the T

    Activity 5 vocabulary (10 min)

    -T teaches materials and Ss write the words in their copybooks

    -Ss look at the photo and try to identify the objects and the materials they are made of. They listen to the

    recording to check the answers (ex 1/37)

    Activity 6 practice (5 min)

    -Ss do a writing exercise. They have to look at the things and say what they are made of. (activity book,

    page 26, ex B)

    Activity 7 homework (5 min)

    -Ss have to do an odd one out exercise (activity book, page 27, ex D)
