WHY ARE FAMILIES LIVING IN MOTELS AND WHY SHOULD WE CARE? Monday, November 15, 7-8 pm (Zoom) Learn more about the precariously housed families that our parish is seeking to serve through our Lazarus Ministry at a presentation by Dr. Stephanie Gonzalez Guittar, PhD, Assistant Professor of Sociology at Rollins College. Dr. Guittar’s research focuses on the intersectionality of poverty and homelessness, specifically on the experiences of families living in motels in Central Florida. Join us to learn more about the struggles around food insecurity and seeking permanent housing that families in these challenging circumstances face. Register on the St. Margaret Mary website or contact Meghan Collins at [email protected] NOVEMBER IS BLACK CATHOLIC HISTORY MONTH The U.S. Bishops established Black Catholic History Month in 1990. Last week we celebrated the feast of St. Martin de Porres,

a patron of interracial harmony. Did you know that Black Catholics, both enslaved and free, helped found our nation’s oldest city, establishing St. Augustine in 1693? Learn more about our history and watch a short film about one story of the Black Catholic experience at cultural.catholic.edu/resources/bchm.html.

Liturgy

NEW ALTAR SERVER TRAINING FOR 6TH GRADE AND OLDER: Altar Servers enhance the quality of liturgical celebrations by assisting the priest in various ways during the Mass and by taking part in liturgical processions. Not only does the Altar Server offer an extremely important service in the Liturgy, but it is also a wonderful way for young people to learn and understand the elements that comprise the Mass. A server can expect to be scheduled to serve at weekend Masses about once or twice a month and scheduling is done according to each family’s availability. Boys and girls in the 6th grade or higher who have received their First Holy Communion are eligible for this training session. New altar server training begins on Tuesday, November 16 and continues for four additional weeks from 6:30 to 8:00 pm, also in the Church. Each new server must be accompanied by a parent or guardian to the first session on November 16. New servers are expected to attend all five sessions. Additional training dates are Tuesday November 30, Tuesday December 7, Monday December 13, and Tuesday December 21. All sessions are from 6:30 – 8:00pm. To register, go to stmargaretmary.org/altar-server-registration. For additional information, please contact Lisa Weis, Director of Liturgy, at [email protected] or 407-647-0726.

IN REMEMBRANCE During the month of November, it has been our tradition at St. Margaret Mary to inscribe the names of our deceased loved ones into the Book of the Names of the Dead. As we did last year, instead of inscribing them into a book, please write the names of your deceased loved ones on a piece of paper from home and place the paper in the large pottery urn located near the paschal candle in the sanctuary. The displayed urn and paschal candle will be available until Advent. At each weekend Mass during November until Advent, we will remember all those names who have been inscribed and offered in the pottery urn. THE SMM NURSERY IS NOW OPEN for the Saturday, 5 pm Mass and Sunday, 9:30 am Mass. Reservations are requested and it is limited to 10 children. Please visit stmargaretmary.org/nursery to read the guidelines and to register. Please contact the Family Life Office with questions or for more information: 407-645-0284. UPDATED PROTOCOLS FOR MASS During the pandemic, the Parish Staff and Volunteers have worked diligently to maintain a safe, prayerful worship space. Please make note of the following updates to our safety protocols: At our weekend Masses we will offer

three entrances: the lower courtyard entrance, front doors of the Church, and the last door on Canton Ave. (second door from the parking lot).

As has been part of our safety protocols for several years, all doors will be locked once Mass begins. If you find you are

late, an usher will be at the upper courtyard door to assist you in entering.

Masks are recommended but not mandated while in the Church building.

Collection baskets will be located at each entrance for your convenience.

The Church and Chapel are open for private prayer until 7 pm during the week. Come spend some quality time in prayer with our Lord.

We thank you for your assistance as we continue to worship together as a parish community. INCENSE AT MASS “Let my prayer arise before you like incense…” In coming months, incense may be used on the weekend of Nov 20/21 (Christ the King), Dec 8 (Immaculate Conception), the Sundays of Advent and at the following Christmas Masses: 8 pm and 10 pm Christmas Eve, 10 am and 12 noon Christmas day. Incense is never used at the 8 am Sunday Masses. ADVENT WREATH LIGHTING Would you like to assist with the liturgies during Advent by lighting a candle of the Advent wreath at the beginning of Mass? Please contact Lisa Weis at [email protected] with your name, email and preferred Mass time. The four weekends of Advent are: November 27/28, December 4/5, December 11/12, December 18/19.

WE WELCOME OUR NEWEST CATECHUMEN THIS WEEKEND IN THE RITE OF ACCEPTANCE We also welcome Doug Worswick as a sacramental candidate

whose bio was in the bulletin a few weeks ago. Adriana Lee Hudkins Jouve is a student at Rollins. When asked “What brought you to the Catholic Church?”, she answered: ‘self-faith exploration, talking and experiences.’ She continued: “I was born and raised without a followed

faith. I have slowly questioned my faith for God throughout life but I was never fully interested on opening myself to him until this summer throughout talking to different family members, visiting churches and needing answers to my questions. I found out the path I want to follow.”

Nativity Collection Sale to Benefit Haiti This weekend after Masses in the Parish Hall The family of Jackie Lamberty is donating their mother’s incredible collection of Nativity scenes to be displayed for purchase by the parishioners of St. Margaret Mary. All the proceeds will go to help with the building and equipping of the new church at Our Lady of the Assumption. These Nativity scenes were collected by Jackie over the years from around the world and meant so much to her and her devotion to Our Lord and the Christmas season. Please come and see the collection and find one to add to your own display this Christmas in your home. The Haiti Faith and Worship Committee along with Jackie’s family will be on hand to assist you in any way. Thank you. THANK YOU to all who bought the book, “Walking Together: A History of Winter Park, Florida”. The proceeds totaled $2,000 which benefitted the Haiti Relief Fund. We are most grateful.
