NOVEMBER 2010 ISSUE NO. 10/2010 PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE by Mike Harada Dear Members As I write this month’s article, the Town Hall Meeting and elections for next year’s Executive Board of Directors is a month away. A bit shorter for you as you read this. It is my hope that our membership takes this opportunity to elect their favorite candidate. Next year will also have its challenges and your board will be called to task to ensure the well being of our club, vote wisely! For those who have visited the clubhouse lately, you cannot help but notice the renovation work that is occurring. I’ve reviewed the drawings and I think you all will be very pleased with the outcome when the dust settles. As with any construction effort, regrettably there is inconvenience in access to the facilities. We have tried to minimize those disruptions while ensuring maximizing the continued Clubhouse use. The Education Center construction will accommodate a seamless use of the remaining areas of the Clubhouse. You may have read recently the awarding of the Congressional Gold Medal to the 100 th Infantry Battalion, one of the three WWII AJA units recognized. Information sent from the mainland was announced at the board meetings and information has been posted at the Clubhouse. Some major points of information: (1) there is only one medal in recognition for the three combat units (100th, 442nd RCT and MIS), after presentation that medal goes to the Smithsonian Museum for display; (2) veterans and family members may purchase a replica of the medal from the U.S. Mint in 2011, we don’t know yet when or what the cost may be; (3) your Board of Directors selected Mr. Robert Arakaki to represent our club at the presentation ceremony in Washington, D.C. in the summer 2011. Mr. Arakaki can choose a club member to accompany him. The holiday season is also rapidly approaching and we hope you will join in with the various chapter activities celebrating the Christmas season. With all that goes on in our world, there are many reasons for us to be thankful and a good opportunity to set aside any differences and join together for a merry and blessed time. This is a bittersweet time for me as your president. I will step aside and you will have a new president to help guide the future of our club. During my two years, there were some successes and some not so successful efforts. I’ll write you, in my next and final message, my thoughts and my hopes for the club’s future. \Ç `xÅÉÜ|tÅ \Ç `xÅÉÜ|tÅ \Ç `xÅÉÜ|tÅ \Ç `xÅÉÜ|tÅ Hisami Fujita of B Co. passed away in September 24, 2010 Iwao Sukisaki of D Co. PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE by Mike Harada

Dear Members

As I write this month’s article, the Town Hall Meeting and elections for next year’s Executive Board of Directors is a month away.

You may have read recently the awarding of the Congressional Gold Medal to the 100th Infantry Battalion, one of the three WWII AJA units recognized. or what the cost may be; (3) your Board of Directors selected Mr.

With all that

EDUCATION CENTER UPDATE by Susan Muroshige

On October 5, Reverend Daiya Amano of the Izumo Taishakyo Mission conducted a blessing ceremony in preparation for the start of the clubhouse renovation. In attendance were veterans, wives, descendants, and members of the project team. (Photos courtesy of Wayne Iha).

Work is continuing on the development of the website. The Puka Puka Parades are a very valuable source of information about the 100th Infantry Battalion and the post war Club 100. All available issues starting from 1946 have been digitized. This means they have been converted to an electronic format which can be incorporated into the website. The next step will be to identify articles that will be made available on the website. Once this happens, they will be accessible to anyone searching the Internet for information on the 100th, not just those who have been 100th subscribers.

As part of the new displays, the pictures of the honorary members that have been displayed in the clubhouse will be accompanied by a short biography of each person and the reason why they were honored. To find this information, research has been done by looking through old office records and Puka Puka

Parades and asking members for information. It was discovered that photographs of several members are not currently represented in the Clubhouse.

Work has also been done for the original company photos that were taken at Camp McCoy and have been hanging in the lounge for many years. Many of the

names listed under the photographs needed to be verified as there were typos, duplicate names or there were no records of a person in the battalion listings. Often a soldier's Japanese first name was listed in battalion records, but their English name was

used for the photographs or visa versa. Not every name could be verified, but a substantial numbers of errors were corrected.

A few times, an incorrect name was used. Mr. Kenneth Higa was one of the veterans who reviewed all the names of his company and made corrections. He couldn't find his own name but remembered who he had been standing next to! We found he had been listed as Kevin Higa. Thank you to all the veterans who helped with the review - Mr. Higa, Seiso Kamishita, Ukichi Woizumi, Robert Takashige, Tom Tsubota, Ed Ikuma, Goro Sumida, and Tad Kanda. My apologies if I have left out any names.

BAKER CHAPTER NEWS by B.S. Akamine

Hope you receive this in time for the November 6 meeting. At this writing, we do not know where the meeting will be held. If you are planning to attend, please call Chapter President Robert Arakaki after October 25 to find out the location of the meeting. The December chapter meeting is waived.

We had our meeting at the Tree Top Restaurant on, October 2, 2010. Twenty of us were present to enjoy the buffet lunch. We learned that Evelyn Tsuda and her Christmas Party Committee are getting things organized for the December 5 date at 10:A.M. at the Clubhouse. Lunch is at 11:30 a.m. The Nanakuli High and Middle School drama class will perform again so bring cameras and video cameras. Please see the information provided by Evelyn Tsuda in this issue.

For the October meeting, Tokuji Ono and Gary Nakayama won picture frames donated by Ann Kabasawa, and Aki Nosaka won a wiping cloth and bag donated by Helen Kodama. One thing good about having our meeting at a restaurant is no need to set up and clean up.

Baker Chapter sends deepest sympathy to the family

of Hisami Fujita who passed away at his home on September 24. Private graveside services were held at Mililani Cemetery. The family requested that the Club's flags be displayed. Heard it was chicken skin to have all the flags fluttering in the breeze as Taps was played by the bugler. Rest in peace, Paesan.

HEADQUARTERS CHAPTER NEWS by Janice Sakoda – 737-7778

Our Christmas Party will be held December 11 starting at 3:30 p.m. and we’re combining with C Chapter. Don’t forget to RSVP! (See column else-where in the PPP).

Our Fall Luncheon at Maple Garden was very

enjoyable, thanks to Elsie Oshita who organized this event. There were 21 of us who turned out for this get- together. Amy Muroshige, who is running for Secretary, dropped in to say “hi” even though she couldn’t stay for the buffet lunch. Dorothy Tama-shiro provided 5 great door prizes which added some excitement to our luncheon. It was good to see Mar-garet Nosse, Wally Onuma and his daughter-in-law Gail, Alicia Robello, and Janice Trubitt (who, by the way, has consented to run for the office of Treas-urer). And it was good seeing our “regulars” at this luncheon, too. (On a side note, if you don’t know Janice Trubitt, she is the daughter of Albert and Yaeko Yokoyama. After meeting Janice, Mrs. Tamashiro told me that Janice is just like her dad---friendly and outgoing.)

We also had Charlene Kwan join us. Charlene is with the Education Center and is the contact person to have the veterans’ photos scanned and put on the web. If you have photos of your husband (or dad) just prior to and during the war years that you’re willing to loan out , please call the Education Center at 946-4099. Once the photos are professionally scanned and documented, it will be returned to you. This request is not only limited to HQ/Medics Chapter, but is extended to all veterans and their families.

Our deepest condolences are extended to Bea Ho-sokawa’s family. Bea, widow of Fred Hoso-kawa, passed away September 9th. She is survived by daughters Gail Awakuni and Ann Shirai, seven grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

We’d like to take this opportunity to thank every-one who showed up to help place flowers on the vet-erans’ graves on September 25 for the Joint Memo-rial Service. Headquarters had a good turnout.

Thank you to Wally Onuma and his daughter-in-

law for the delicious sushi they provided at our Sep-tember meeting.

ABLE CHAPTER NEWS by Avin Oshiro

Yes, there will be an Able Chapter Christmas Party this year. It will be held on Sunday, December 12 start-ing at 10:00 am at the Clubhouse. A registration form is included in this issue of the PPP. I am calling for all Able sons and daughters to help pitch in to make this a memorable celebration for our fathers. If you have any ideas, want to volunteer or can make a donation, please leave a message for me with the Club (946-0272 or e-mail [email protected]).

Aloha Doggies!

Last year, we had our first Sansei-organized Dog Chapter Christmas Party. The Sansei and their families did a terrific job. More than 50 people turned out for the festivities and everyone seemed to have a good time, enjoying the food, fellowship, Mary Tsuka-yama’s annual Christmas craft, door prizes and great homegrown entertainment. So, hana hou! Let’s do it again!

This year, we have been assigned SUNDAY, DE-CEMBER 19, for our Dog Chapter Christmas Party. The time: 1:00 p.m. - 4:30 p.m. at the clubhouse.

Lunch will be about $15 for adults, $7 for kids ages 12 to 18, and free for children under 12. This year, we are hoping to have the Hawaiian menu that we wanted last year. We have found a caterer who works on Sundays.

Rather than dipping into our treasury, our goal once again is to have this party pay for itself. We'll still have great entertainment, and Santa Claus will drop by to deliver presents for the children. Parents: please bring an already-wrapped gift priced at approxi-mately $10 for your child so that Santa can present it to him or her. We can also have door prizes, but the prizes will have to be donated, so please start thinking about what you might be able to donate. The more prizes the merrier! Our goal is for everyone to go home with at least one door prize, so let's be creative!

What's important is that we celebrate the season with the families of the Dog Company soldiers who served our country so honorably in World War II and who became friends for life. We are their families and that is our common bond. Although most of our veter-ans have passed on, their spirit lives on in us.

Let’s all work together to plan the party. With eve-ryone’s help, we’ll have a great holiday celebration. Please contact me, Karleen Chinen (daughter of Wally and Kay Chinen), at 845-2255, x. 118 (work), 255-5798 (cell) or e-mail me at [email protected] and let me know what days are best for you to meet.

Also, if you plan to attend the party, please let me know how many of your family members will be at-tending — and their ages — so we’ll be sure to have enough food and door prizes.

We thank our Dog Chapter veterans, wives and widows for planning the wonderful Christmas parties we all enjoyed for so many years. Now it’s their turn to come and enjoy the party. We've been very fortu-nate to have valuable resources like Joy Teraoka, Helen Nikaido, Mary Hamasaki, Moriso Teraoka, Jits Yoshida and Dog Chapter president Dr. Denis Teraoka to turn to for advice in organizing the party.

We look forward to hearing from you — and to seeing you at the Dog Chapter Christmas party on De-cember 19!

MAUI CHAPTER NEWS by Stan Izumigawa

Many thanks to Sam Fujikawa and his group for

planning the final October 17 to October 22 Las Ve-gas Mini Reunion. I thoroughly enjoyed the fellow-ship and the opportunity to chat with old friends and get to know others better, thanks largely to someone close to me whose engaging personality and friendly ways engendered interaction with prior acquaintances.

There were 27 veterans onstage for the photo

shoot at the banquet, one-third of whom were prior acquaintances.

And for those of you who inquired about Helen

Nakashima of Maui, I checked upon returning and learned that she had signed up for the trip but had to cancel because she had been diagnosed with breast cancer and had to undergo chemotherapy.

2011 LAS VEGAS MINI-REUNION

Surprise! There will be a 25th Anniversary Mini-Reunion in Las Vegas next year after all! However, duties will be assumed by the next generation, giv-

ing Sam and Teri Fujikawa a well-deserved rest after all of these years.

An informal kick-off meeting was held during the past Mini-Reunion with descendants from Hawaii and the Mainland. We are still in the early planning stages and can use all the help we can get. If you’d like to volunteer, please contact the Clubhouse. Mahalo.

FAQ’S ON THE CONGRESSIONAL GOLD MEDAL OF HONOR - information from the National Veterans Network

website (www.nationalveteransnetwork.com)

WILL THE CLUB GET A MEDAL

AND WILL I GET MY OWN MEDAL?

No. The U.S. Mint will design ONE and ONLY ONE gold medal that will be presented to a representative of the 100th, 442nd and MIS at the Congressional Ceremony in 2011. Following the Ceremony, this ONE gold medal will be taken to the Smithsonian for display. All three units will share this ONE gold medal.

Gold medals will NOT be awarded to individual veterans, veterans organizations or the 100th, 442nd and MIS as separate entities. Bronze Replicas of the gold medal will be available for purchase from the U.S. Mint at the time of the Congressional Ceremony. The cost of a three inch replica medal will be $42.

I WANT TO GO TO WASHINGTON DC SO WHAT DO I DO?

If you would like to attend the Congressional Ceremony and two day award festivities in Washington DC in 2011, you are responsible for registering with the National Veterans Network and making your own travel, housing or other arrangements to and from this event for members. The Club will not be coordinating any of these tasks.

You should first determine if you are eligible to receive the award. As determined by the Department of Defense, 100th Infantry Battalion veterans who served from December 7, 1941 to December 31, 1946 would be eligible. Priority seating at events will be given to living 100th, 442nd and MIS WWII veterans.

If you are planning to attend, you are asked to complete a registration form for yourself and each person in your party (spouse, children, others). You can register online at the Nisei Veterans Network’s website at www.nationalveteransnetwork.com/ceremonyregistration.html. You can also print out the registration form or pick up a copy at the Clubhouse. Completed forms should be mailed to the designated address in Washington DC. Please do not send your completed forms to the Clubhouse.

If you are NOT planning to go, you should NOT fill out a form. Forms are only to be completed by those who are planning to attend.

HOW MUCH IS IT GOING TO COST TO GO?

As of October 2010, there has not yet been an estimated cost per person to attend the Ceremony and Awards events. There has been some discussion about the possibility of free or low-cost airfare for veterans only but nothing has been confirmed.

For updated information, please visit the National Veterans Network website at www.nationalveteransnetwork.com. The Office will also post information at the Club or in the PPP as it becomes available.

RENOVATIONS AT THE CLUBHOUSE

Besides the ongoing Education Center renovations, there was a lot going on while we were in Las Vegas at the Mini-Reunion. 1st VP Avin Oshiro hired some Halloween help to install brand sparkling new sinks and toilets in the restrooms and new urinals in the men’s room. The plumbing was upgraded and new spigots installed for the kitchen and bar sinks. Just in time for washing all of those Christmas party pots and pans.

Plans are in place to replace the big bulky television in the lounge with a newer one . If you would like the old tv or know of a non-profit that could use it, please leave a message for Avin with the Office (946-0272 or e-mail [email protected]). We are also planning to replace the cushion covers for the lounge furniture so if anyone knows of a good source for these, please let the Office know as soon as possible.

EVENTS AT THE CLUBHOUSE

All weekly Clubhouse events (Craft Club on Tuesdays, Line Dancing on Wednesdays, and Wine Gang on Thursday) are still being held during the renovations. In the event of a last minute change or cancellation, a message will be left on the Office phone at 946-0272.
