Bicameral legislature – Parliament Members represented the people and passed

laws to limit rulers’ power Petition of Right (1628)

Gave power to limit government to Parliament Government could no longer:

Illegally imprison, force people to shelter soldiers,

English Bill of Rights Established more rights for people and parliament (no army without Parliamentary consent)

Charters Power given by English government to its citizens that were colonizing America

Colonial Governments – all were run by governors Governors were advised by councils (land

owners) and assemblies of elected representatives

3 Types of Colonies

1) Royal – colony belonged directly to the crown (Virginia)

2) Proprietary – power to govern a colony is granted to an individual by the king (Maryland)

3) Corporate – Limited government control Privately run English still had military and trade control
