Over a decade, the thought of

making of King Abdullah

University Hospital (KAUH) a

world-class hospital gave its

first outburst. An all-out effort

that would steer us in that

direction started to bear fruits

initially when the administration

of KAUH put together an office

for quality control that would

oversee every related activity to

insure that things fell right into

place.

This was followed thereafter with some diligent efforts by top

administrative officers from KAUH by putting it on stage to

compete with other world renowned hospitals as KAUH decided to

stride a road set forth concurrent with all those administrative

fixtures that set the right policies in place, several actions on the

ground saw light at the end of the tunnel.

KAUH succeeded in securing accreditation of HCAC Breast

Imaging Acc., ISO 22000 + HACCP, Occupational Safety Award,

JCIA and ISO 9001 for its medical and administrative departments.

This indeed was a great plus for the hospital and the school of

medicine.

This, over the years, was followed with other measures that would

bring about other elements to the scene; such measures brought

about the initial seeds for medical centers, which we aspire to see

serving as national centers for research and training.

Thereon, the stringent requirements by the

administration to move KAUH to a lofty position on the

world map of medical institutions also brought with it,

on top of medical achievements.

On the road to stardom amongst world peer medical

institutions, KAUH continues to stand firm on its will

to progress further more as we put in place every

possible motive that would make trainee students and

doctors alike aspire for excellence in teaching as well as

excellence in research.

The editorial board of KAUH Newsletter will do their

best to promote our hospital on both regional and

international arenas, and we are confident to build on

the success so far achieved on the road towards an

excellent hospital.

Achieving a world-class stature is not just about new

policies and administrative regulations… It is about

everything that can translate the aspirations and

ambitions of every Jordanian to move us forward on a

path that would ultimately lead the country’s economy

towards a knowledge-based economy.

I am pleased and proud to

Abdullah University Hospital

(KAUH) newsletter. Considerable

time and effort were faithfully

devoted in the planning and

production of this first issue so that

it meets the hopes and aspirations

of all members of KAUH and

builds bridges of passionate

communications with all

constituencies. The goals of

KAUH newsletter are:

The Newsletter editorial committee is composed of

staff advisors, who, in addition to this task, are doing

their daily jobs and routines in clinical, teaching,

advisory, and administrative work. The major

objective of volunteering their energy to this task is to

serve their fellow citizens of KAUH and provides a

monthly panoramic view of the medical, academic,

activities & achievements of the hospital.

Dear colleagues, please make a contribution to KAUH

Newsletter which is intended to bring out the hidden

literary talents in doctors, nurses, medicine students,

and other staff of KAUH and to inculcate leadership

skills among them. The local, national, and

international communities will come to know about the

caliber of students and faculty through this medium.

Keeping this in mind, I expect the contributions to this

Newsletter to be of extremely high standards and

quality. I wish all the success for this venture. I am

sure that the KAUH Newsletter will provide a platform

to everyone to sharpen their writing talent and will

strengthen the academic and medical activities of the

Hospital. Statements and opinions expressed in the

Newsletter are those of contributors and does not

reflect those of the editorial staff.

These contributions will have required a generous allotment of time

and effort. It is this willingness to make the effort to share

knowledge, concerns and special insights with King Abdullah

University Hospital Community as well as local, national, and

international community.

Quality Assurance at King Abdullah University Hospital

Quality has been at the top of KAUH’s priorities since its

establishment. It stills the strategic direction that cannot be

sacrificed whatever the challenges are. KAUH aims at

providing services that:

meets the requirements and expectations of the patients and

the community,

is in line with the scientific and technological advancements,

and

emphasizes the application of national and international

standards.

Quality, at KAUH, is overseen by the highest administrative

levels through involving the hospital’s Board of Directors in

reviewing the “Quality and Performance Improvement Plan”

and through discussing the quarterly quality report prepared

by the CEO. These reports and others are discussed first in

the Central Committee of Quality Improvement and Patient

Safety.

On daily basis, the CEO and the Executives Office are

monitoring the quality activities through qualitative quality

indicators and regular reports that are discussed and analyzed

to produce valuable recommendations and decisions Quality

Improvement division was established to become a link

between top management and other departments pertaining to

the establishment, maintenance and improvement of Quality

Management System (QMS). Quality Improvement

Department, also, guides the various departments, teams and

committees to the scientific ways adopted for development

and improvement and explains the national and international

standards.

Through the QMS, the hospital:

reframed most of its regulations and decisions into

work systems and forms that can be accessed by

any employee,

staff are trained on these work systems to help

them apply the procedures perfectly,

performance is measured via performance

indicators and internal auditing,

HCAC accreditation for National Quality and

Patient Safety Goals

Prof. Ismail Matalka, CEO of King Abdullah University Hospital,

former president the Arab Division of International Academy of

Pathology, and President of the Jordanian Society of Pathologists,

received flag of the International Academy of Pathology during the

31st Conference of the Academy, which was held in Cologne,

Germany, attended by 4,500 participants from various countries

around the world.

The delivery of the flag within the traditions of the Academy handed

over to the President of the upcoming conference, Prof. Ismail

Matalka in a ceremony to begin preparations for the conference on

behalf of the Arab Division. in the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan on

October 2018 at the Dead Sea.

Prof. Matalka considered that this conference, which

will be held in Jordan, as an evidence to the high

respect of Jordan by international medical and

academic community, and an acknowledgment of its

high ability of administration, organization, and

hospitality.

Its Worthy noted that The IAP is dedicated to the

advancement of Pathology through educational

exchanges worldwide. Collectively, IAP provides a

forum for the presentation and discussion of advances

in the understanding of pathologic processes and for

the presentation and critical evaluation of scientific,

technological and methodological advances. The

fundamental role of the IAP, is to provide access to

the vast store of valid, currently authenticated and

trusted knowledge for questioning minds.

Distinguished Achievement in the field of Cochlear

implants at KAUH

A surgical team lead by Professor Firas Alzoubi, the head of

cochlear implant center in the hospital and the head of special

surgery department at Jordan University of Science and

Technology, has performed a bilateral cochlear implant surgery

to a Syrian girl who lost her hearing completely after head injury.

The kid has moved to Lebanon where she lived with her family

before this life-changing incident. Prof. Alzoubi mentioned that

the audiological and radiological tests revealed extensive damage

of the inner ear hair cells after the injury and the family was

referred to the center for further evaluation. The Centre has an

international reputation for treating deafness and performing

complicated cases of cochlear implantation.

Prof Alzoubi added that the cochlear implant centre at KAUH has

already performed more than one thousand implantations for

Jordanian

and Arab patients in collaboration with his royal

highness the Crown Prince's initiative “Hearing without

Borders”.

The center also trained many surgeons to perform

complicated ear surgeries and assisted in establishing

more than 12 cochlear implant and rehabilitation centers

all over the region.

On the other hand, Professor Ismail Matalkah, KAUH

CEO, has praised this great achievement and added that

prof. Alzoubi managed to perform complicated and

advanced cochlear implantation with great success. Prof.

Matalka confirmed that such distinguished achievements

by the hospital staff in all medical fields will enforce the

new comprehensive strategy that is being prepared by the

hospital to improve the marketing and medical tourism.

This will help in creating sustainable improvement and

competitiveness of the medical services at KAUH and

will maintain the excellence of Jordan as a major

destination for medical tourism.

It worthy noted that the Crown Prince's initiative is

aiming to treat deaf children including cochlear

implantation and to establish rehabilitation centers for the

deaf throughout the Kingdom

The surgery took 10 hours under continuous

general anesthesia monitoring, went smoothly

without complications or even the need to be

adjuvant the management with radio or

chemotherapy.

After six years of the procedure, the Journal of

crano- facial Surgery, an American reputable

highly index journal, published this Jordanian

achievement as the most extensive type of this

malignant tumor to be removed by a novel

technique, hopefully, this will encourage many

skull base surgeons worldwide to offer their

patients such method and replaced the old open

highly complicated technique.

Today, The Jordanian woman is in an excellent

medical condition, she has continued her career

professional as a teacher and given her two

children during her 6- year follow up period.

Dr. Mohannad Al-Qudah; an otolaryngologist in the hospital and

associate professor at faculty of medicine, Jordan University of

Science and Technology ; said.

Immediately, he decided to lead a highly specialized team and

removed the tumor ever being before described in the literature

through a minimally invasive technique, with no facial or cranial

incision, taking advantages of the team expertise and the advanced

technology available in the hospital.

performance and earning certification credentials from the

Certification Board of Infection Control and

Epidemiology, Milwaukee, Wisconsin, USA.

The Mission of Certification Board of Infection Control

and Epidemiology (CBIC) is to protect the public through

the development, administration and promotion of an

accredited certification in infection prevention & control.

CBIC maintains and promotes professional certification of

the highest quality through the accomplishment of key

objectives. It was established by the Association for

Professionals in Infection Control and Epidemiology, Inc.

(APIC) in 1981; CBIC is an affiliate of APIC

KAUH CEO, Prof. Ismail Matalka announced that the

hospital will conduct free lectures for Interns starting next

week based on twice weekly program (Sundays and

Wednesdays).

The continuous medical education lectures will be

performed under the supervision of Medical Service

Department, in order to help colleague Interns obtaining

adequate, timely, systematic and practical training in

addition to qualify them to pass the interns exams held by

the Jordan Medical Council. He added that these lectures

will include several medical specialties like neurosurgery,

internal medicine, general surgery, pediatric, gynecology

&obstetrics, Otolaryngology and Opthalmology, as well as

public health, family medicine, general health management

& Policy and other medical fields to be determined later.

An American team of cardiac electrophysiologists from

the University of North Carolina Hospital represented by

Prof. Paul Mounsey, Prof. Gilliam Francis and Dr. Basil

Abu-Alhaija performed 20 implantations of different

cardiac devices (Dual chamber pacemaker, intracardiac

defibrillator, cardiac resynchrnization therapy CRT) to

number of patients at King Abdullah University Hospital

(KAUH) in collaboration with our cardiologists (Dr.

Moh’d Jarrah Dr. Rasheed Ibdah, Dr. Sukain Rawashdeh,

and Dr. Alla Ababneh).

KAUH CEO Prof. Ismail Matalka had discussed with the

medical team opportunities of scientific and medical

cooperation, and the possibility of building cooperation in

the field of establishment joint programs in cardiology and

affording possible training for our medical and

paramedical staff.

Prof. Matalka added that every effort will be

offered to improve the quality and update the

facility in the cardiology Department.

On his part, Dean of the Faculty of Medicine at

Jordan University of Science and Technology

(JUST), Dr. Wail Hayajneh, hopes to increase the

areas of cooperation with the University of North

Carolina Hospital through other programs,

including training and qualification of medical staff

and exchange student projects.

He added that the American medical team held

several seminars and symposium for cardiologists

and resident physicians as well as medical students.

Dr. Mohannad Al-Qudah, director of medical dept.

at KAUH stated that annual visits to these doctors

will be scheduled to pervade more patients interest

who suffer heart disease.

The medical team praised the good reputation of

KAUH and the Faculty of Medicine, and their

interest of cooperation in scientific and research

fields with international universities and

institutions, which therefore will reflect positively

on the educational process and research.

A 32 years old lady who is known to have infertility

for over 8 years, congenital thrombophilia, recurrent

miscarriages, pre eclampsia, and uncontrolled

diabetes gave birth to her first child yesterday at

King Abdullah University Hospital by cesarean

section. The couple were treated at the assisted

conception unit the supervision of Dr. Laila Al

Zaghal (the head of the IVF center) and her team.

Dr. Zaghal said that it was a miraculous conception

and a very high risk pregnancy. Mother and baby are

doing well .
