Daily Schedule

7:30-8:00-Arrival/Morning Work

8:00-9:45- Reading

9:45-10:00- Restroom Break

10:00-11:00- Math

11:00-11:30- Lunch

11:30-11:40- Restroom Break

11:45-12:45- Weekly Alternating of Science/History

12:45-1:30- P.E.

1:30-2:00- (Specials) Technology, Art, or Free work time

2:00-2:25- Snack/Recess

2:25-2:35- Dismissal

Morning Routine Entering the classroom

1. Unpack Quietly Hang backpacks/belongings on hooks

(You will be assigned a hook number) Place agenda and take-home folder in

designated basket on guided reading table

2. Record Lunch Choice This is my method of attendance You will record your lunch choice (Hot

Lunch, Sandwich Bar, or Brought) 3. Begin Morning Work

Morning work will always be displayed on the the board in the front of the classroom.

Morning Routine

Money If you have money, make sure it is in an envelope labeled

with your name and what the money is for. Leave the envelope with money inside in the front pocket

of your blue take-home folder. You will place your folder in the designated basket on our reading table.

Notes Any notes for me will also be kept in the front pocket of

your blue take-home folder. I will take out all money, notes, etc. as I am checking

agendas and folders each morning.

Agendas

Each student will receive an agenda in their “WELCOME BAG”

Students are responsible for recording any important information regarding upcoming events, homework, or assignments.

Agendas will be sent home every day. Parents will need to check agenda and sign-off before returning to school the next day.

Folders

Students will be responsible for their folders throughout the year.

Students should take home their blue folder EVERY afternoon and return it EVERY morning.

Folders should be plastic.

Folders should be clearly labeled with child’s name, subject, and class

Attendance

As part of your morning routine, you will mark your lunch choice in our pocket chart. When the morning bell rings at 7:45, I will check the pocket

chart to see who has marked their lunch choice. I will also use this for attendance each day. Once all choices are recorded, I will remove all sticks so the

chart is clear.

Tardiness You will need to sign in in the office before entering the

classroom Once in the classroom, check the time to see where the class is

in our daily schedule. You will follow normal morning procedures.

Absences

Excused Absences Student will check the basket on my desk for the folder

for missed assignments and make-up work. Doctor’s Excuse Parent’s Excuse School Functions

Unexcused Absences Students will not be able to complete make-up work for

days with an unexcused absence (See policy handbook). Student missed school with no note

Make-Up Work (Excused Absences Only) There are drawers next to my desk with

five drawers labeled Monday-Friday. 1. You will find the drawer for the day you

missed. For Example: If you miss a Tuesday, you will

find the drawer labeled “Tuesday.” 2. Once you have found the drawer, you will

need to take one of the stapled packets out. This is your missed work.

3. Complete work in free time or you will need to take it home in your blue take-home folder and complete it that night.

Early Dismissal

In the event of a school closing, for ANY reason, parents will be contacted via phone, text messaging, as well as email.

The Board of Education will also contact local media so parents can tune in to check on school closings.

Dismissal

2:25- We will begin preparing for dismissal Clean our desk areas Put away any supplies we are using I will call students by pods to get backpacks. Once you have your backpack, you

will need to pack your belongings.

2:30- Car riders will line up in alphabetical order

2:35- Car rider bell

2:35- Once car riders have left the room, bus riders will line up in alphabetical order.

2:45- Bus rider bell

Homework

Reading homework will be given on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Reading homework will be distributed at the end of our reading

block on Tuesday and Thursday. As soon as you receive your homework, you need to put it directly

in your red homework folder. Reading homework will be taken home in your red homework

folder.

Any work that is not completed in class will be taken home to be completed. Any incomplete work will be taken home in your red homework

folder.

Late Work or No Work

Late work is accepted, but there will be 5 points deducted from grade for every day work is late.

If a student fails to turn in their work, I will send a note home for the parents to sign and return. The student will receive a zero for an uncompleted assignment.

Happy Birthday to YOU

It’s your BIRTHDAY! Students will wear a birthday sash (Only if they wish). Students will receive a special treat. Students will receive a certificate.

You are more than welcome to bring a special snack for you child’s birthday. Please make sure to adhere to our school’s policy handbook when bringing in outside food items.

Student of the Week

Each week, we will spotlight a student from our class. You will create an “ALL ABOUT ME”

poster that will hang in the classroom throughout the week.

You can bring pictures of you and your family to put on your poster.

Medication Procedures

All medication must be documented and filed through the office.

All medication will be distributed by the school nurse.

Please refer to the school handbook regarding medication procedures.

Visitors

We love to get our parents involved in the school.

How can your parents get involved? Parent/teacher conference Class parties Field trips Lunch with child

For special events and field trips, parents will be notified through our weekly newsletter.

When visiting: Visitors must always sign in in the office. Visitors must wear their visitor badge while in the school.

Parents and Volunteers

Mrs. Owen’s Classroom Rules

General Rules: Be fair. Be responsible. Be respectful. Be resourceful. Be a risk-taker.

The first day of school, the students and I will work together to establish our final rules for the classroom.

Behavior

There will be a behavior “red light” in our classroom.

All students will start on green. First Offense= Warning Second Offense= Move clip to yellow

light Third Offense= Move clip to red light

Consequences

Just as with our classroom rules, we will establish our final classroom consequences on the first day.

First Offense: Student receives verbal warning.

Second Offense: Student moves clip to yellow. Student will lose a privilege depending on offense. Note will be sent to parents.

Third Offense: Student moves clip to red. Student will be sent to office. Parents will be contacted by phone.

Reward System Students will receive rewards for exceptional behavior and great work!

Examples of rewards: Extra computer time Verbal Praise Furry friend day (Bring your favorite stuffed animal) Stinky feet day (You don’t have to wear your shoes in the classroom) Desk swap (You can change seats with anyone in the class for the day)

How can you earn rewards?

Group Rewards: Mr. Potato Head Each pod will have a Mr. Potato Head. Mr. Potato Head starts each

week with no body parts. As students follow rules, complete work, or go the extra mile, body parts will be earned.

Mrs. Owen will decide when body parts will given. Students should not ask for body parts. Once your Mr. Potato head has all his body parts, Mrs. Owen will give

your pod a reward.

Informing Parents

Parents will be notified of student behavior, daily.

Each day, students will record their behavior color in their agenda.

Parents must sign agenda each night.

Parents who have access to a computer, iPad, or smartphone will have the option of notification by email or ibehave (Behavior application for apple and android devices).

Stations/Group work

Each day during our reading block, I will have small groups at my guided reading table.

While I have one small group at my table, the rest of the students will be rotating through reading stations.

Groups will be assigned by Mrs. Owen.

Groups will follow the stations chart posted in the classroom.

Stations will last approximately 15 minutes. Students will hear a beep two minutes before it’s time to rotate. This is your cue to clean your stations and prepare to transition.

A transition song will play when it’s time to change stations.

Students may not talk to Mrs. Owen when there is a small group at her reading table unless it is an emergency. (Emergency list is posted on wall).

Students need to stay in seats while working

If a student completes their assigned work, they will need to choose one of the following: Finish uncompleted work Read AR book Read book of choice

Classroom materials

Students must take care of materials in the classroom.

Please respect my materials by taking care of them while you use them and putting them in their correct place after using them.

If you do not take care of my materials, we will not be able to use them.

Materials

Pencils: Every day before you begin

your morning work, you should get two sharpened pencils from the “Sharp” jar.

If both of your pencils break during the day, simply walk to the pencil jar, put your old pencils in the “Dull” jar and get two new pencils from the “Sharp” jar.

Bathroom Procedures

Student will line up as I call pods. Pods will be selected inorder of best behavior.

We will have two bathroom monitors (One girl/one boy).

There will be four boys in the restroom at once.

There will be four girls in the restroom at once.

Toilet will flush automatically.

WASH your hands. (This task includes SOAP and water).

Whisper while in the restroom.

When finished, you may get a sip of water, then line up on wall outside of restroom.

Wait quietly for the rest of the class.

Corresponding with Parents

Weekly Newsletter: I will send home a weekly classroom newsletter in your take-

home folder every Friday. The newsletter will inform your parents of any upcoming events. It will list our spelling words for the upcoming week. It will also have important homework assignments and grades.

Parents need to read over newsletter thoroughly. On the bottom of the newsletter there is a place for your parents to sign. If your parents sign this and you return the slip, you will be in a drawing for ten minutes toward an activity of your choice!

Corresponding with Parents

three ring I have set up a three ring account for our class. Three ring is an

educational app that allows me to upload student work, grades, and even reminders from me. Each student/parent will be given a log in ID. Parents can simply go to www.threering.com/mrso1 to access student work at any time.

Corresponding with Parents

Graded Work/Not Graded Work: Graded work will stapled together to be sent home on Fridays,

along with the newsletter. Parents should sign and return ALL graded work.

Work that is not graded will not be attached to the graded packet. Feel free to keep this work at home to put on display!
