Lions Code of Ethics

To show my faith in the worthiness of my vocation by industrious applications to the end that I may merit a reputation for quality of service.

To seek success and to demand all fair remuneration or profit as my just due, but to accept no profit or success at the price of my own self-respect lost because of unfair advantage taken or because of questionable acts on my part.

To remember that in building up my business it is not necessary to tear down another’s; to be loyal to my clients or customers and true to myself.

Whenever a doubt arises as to the right or ethics of my position or action towards others, to resolve such doubt against myself.

To hold friendship as an end and not a means. To hold that true friendship exists not on account of the service performed by one to another but that true friendship demands nothing but accepts service in the spirit in which it is given.

Always to bear in mind my obligations as a citizen to my nation, my state and my community, as to give to them my unswerving loyalty in word, act and deed. To give them freely of my time, labor and means.

To aid others by giving my sympathy to those in distress, my aid to the weak, and my substance to the needy.

To be careful with my criticisms and liberal with my praise; to build up and not destroy.

Through the years, the Pomona Host Lions Club has had numerous distinctions and awards. We are proud of our five members who have been elected District Governor. In 1923-24, Emory Yundt, our charter president, served as the first governor for District 4, which then included California, Nevada and Hawaii. Roy Day became District Governor in 1937-38 and then became the first governor of District 4-E when the district was first divided. In 1950-51, Esper Keiser became the first governor of District 4-E1. Then in 1995-96, Phil Browne served as District 4-L4 Governor and subsequently in 1996-97, Chairman of the Council of Governors. Gilbert F. Smith served as Governor of District 4-L4 in 2014-15.

For many years, the Pomona Host Lions distinguished itself by maintaining a high percentage of attendance, winning twelve 100% banners. In 1947 and 1949, the club won the international pennant for the best attendance in the world. Then with 100% attendance at all meetings in 1962-63, the club won the international attendance award for clubs with weekly meetings. For this, it received the International President’s Banner and a cash award of $100.00.

Also, the Pomona Host Lions Club was named District Club of the Year in 1959, 1965, 1968, 1979, and 1984, and after the clubs were divided into divisions, it received the Division B Club of the Year in 2011 and 2013. Six club presidents have received the District Governor’s first place awards: Calvin Chamberlain in 1959-60, Dale Coons in 1965-66, A. Frank Curtis in 1968-69, William Conners in 1976-77, Clifton L. Allen in 1980-81, and Philip Browne in 1984-85. Other presidents were recognized with the Governor’s second place awards: Frank Bono in 1963-1964, Diego Munoz in 1986-87, Kenneth G. Sherwood, Jr. in 1987-88. Third place awards have gone to Robert E. Oaks in 1973-74 and Delbert A. Pfeifer in 1981-82. In 2009-10, Gilbert F. Smith was awarded the District 4-L4 Lion of the Year, which is the district’s highest award, and in 2012-13, Barbara E. Smith received the District 4-L4 President of the Year Award. That same year, the District Secretary of the Year Award went to Beverly Sugerman. Our Immediate Past President WendyAnn Stuard received the District 4-L4 Lion of the Year Award for 2015-16.

The Pomona Host Lions has also extended or helped extend at least twelve new Lions clubs throughout the years. Club records indicate that we extended La Verne, Ventura Downtown, Pomona Uptown, Pomona Breakfast, Costa Mesa-Newport, Claremont Breakfast, and WesternU Lions Club. We also co-

chartered Chino and Ontario Host and assisted in Banning, 29 Palms, and Victorville.

As the Pomona Host Lions Club looks forward to its 100th Anniversary in 2021, our growing membership is redoubling its commitment to helping others and to the motto of Lions, “WE SERVE.”

exams to a total of 3,120 patients. The club also supported the Junior Olympics, the Rose Parade, Camp Fire Girls, the Red Cross, student memberships in the Pomona Valley Concert Association, the Pomona Valley Human Relations Council, the YMCA, and the Junior Blind.

Varied fundraisers have supported the club’s charitable projects. From 1944 to 1954, the club’s variety and minstrel show was the biggest money-maker, averaging $3,500 each year. Then for four years in the 1950s, in conjunction with the Pomona Uptown Lions and later the Pomona Breakfast Lions, the club sponsored a rodeo. Other memorable fundraising projects have been car-give-aways, rummage sales, community fairs, street dances, pancake breakfasts, bean feeds, Cal Poly Road Shows, trip drawings, White Cane Drives, broom sales, and fruitcake sales. From 1976 to the early 80s, the club put on Tennessee Walking Horse Shows. The most successful of the shows was one in which Zsa Zsa Gabor rode her Tennessee Walker. In later years, the club’s largest fundraiser has been the annual Charities Bowl-a-thon, which began on October 3, 1981. At its peak, the Bowl-a-thon raised $17,000. Some other fundraisers have been the Race for Kids, co-sponsored with PUSD, used car sales, See’s candy sales, and Concerts under the Stars. Recently, the club has initiated the Sight for Success campaign, where donors are given a certificate, honoring them for providing eyeglasses to a student, who otherwise could not obtain vision correction.

In recent years, the Pomona Host Lions has developed strong partnerships with the Pomona Unified School District and Western University, and many projects focus on helping students and teachers. In the early 2000s, the club led the fundraising drive that culminated in the 2002 opening of the $95,000 Lions Vision and Hearing Center donated to the Pomona Unified School District. In conjunction first with the Southern California College of Optometry and now with the Western University, College of Optometry, the vision center is used to provide eye exams for children. Our Lions club purchases eyeglasses for children in need.

Some other recent projects include classroom teachers’ mini-grants, a literacy program for elementary students, Flag Day reading and flag distribution for first and second graders, eyeglasses recycling and feeding the homeless.

Club membership has fluctuated over the years with a high of 160 members in the 1960s and a low of 28 in 2009, at which time the club answered the challenge by launching its “Remaking the Club for the Next Generation” campaign, targeting younger members and the recently retired. Since then, the club has had around 40 to 50 members.

a young boy, putting on annual Christmas parties both at the Fox Theater for 3,000 children and at Casa Colina Hospital when it was in Chino. The club also gave baskets of food and toys to needy families.

In 1932, the 5-instrument Pomona Host Lions Band was formed under the direction of Roy Day and was destined to become world famous. Designated as “the official entertainment group in Multiple District 4,” it performed at 17 international conventions.

During the years of World War II, the club helped man the U.S.O. building on the City Hall grounds, helped in bond drives, sponsored rubber drives and did much in the area of local defense. After the war, the club undertook projects to support a home for boys from broken homes. This had been a dream of Pomona Host Lion LeRoy Haynes and finally became reality in 1946. The home was later known as LeRoy’s Boys Home and later still as the LeRoy Haynes Center. Over a period of some years, the club donated the labor to build the swimming pool, provided funds to build a new wing (the Lions Den), and contributed money for the athletic program and table and chairs for the new dining room. Club members then donated $3,000 to build the chapel and to purchase a Baldwin organ. The club also provided labor during the chapel construction. During this time period, the club purchased uniforms for the Pomona High School band, for its concert band and for the Fremont Junior High School band.

Throughout the years, the Pomona Host Lions Club has continued to serve the youth, the vision and hearing impaired and the physically and mentally disabled, as well as stepping up to meet special needs of the community. The club organized the livestock auction at the Fair for 4-H and Future Farmers, and it purchased a cataract bed and a magnetic unit for removing metal particles from the eye and body. It also sponsored Little League and Colt League baseball teams.

Then in 1964, under President Frank Bono, the club began its long-term

commitment to the Braille Institute in Los Angeles, financing a weekly bus to take blind residents of the Pomona Valley to the institute for classes. For many years, members transported the blind to and from the Braille bus, which then transported them into Los Angeles.

In the 1960s and 70s, the club made visitations to Ensenada, including a dental trip, and the club particularly enjoyed the District conventions in Catalina, where in 1971, club members sold “Seagull Insurance,” which insured the purchaser “under all provisions of said insurance policy against all wrongful acts of seagulls who wantonly fly overhead without regard to human life.” During this time, the club sponsored three glaucoma clinics, giving one-hour

POMONA HOST LIONS HISTORY1921 to 2018

The Lions Club of Pomona, later known as the Pomona Host Lions Club, formed in 1921 when it became the first service club in Pomona, California and the tenth Lions club in all of California, Nevada and Hawaii, then known as District 4. Some reports say that the first planning session was held in January 1921. In subsequent organizational meetings in February, the Los Angeles Host Lions, the sponsoring club, helped the Pomona club get started. The charter was granted on March 4, 1921. However, the charter night was delayed until July 25, 1921 so Melvin Jones, the founder of Lions, and other international officers could travel to Southern California after the international convention in Oakland. Melvin Jones spoke at the Charter Night.

At the time of the charter approval, 37 members had joined the club; 54 members signed the actual charter, and 60 had become members by charter night. Emery R. Yundt was elected charter president. Rollie Stine became the first secretary, and Edward Galle the first vice president. Directors were E. Fred Aunger, Robert C. Watson, Herman Friedman and L. Elmer Sheets.

The club’s first meeting place was the banquet room of the Chamber of Commerce in the Investment Building. In later years, it met at the St. Charles Restaurant, Pomona Valley Club, Robbie’s Restaurant, the Elks Lodge, Mountain Meadows Golf Course and now the Pomona Valley Mining Company Restaurant.

Among the club’s earliest activities were the elimination of itinerant salesmen from Pomona streets and a united effort to build a fire station. An early project that has had a lasting impact was the origination of an agricultural fair, originally known as the Pomona Community Fair, but soon transformed into the Los Angeles County Fair. Pomona Host Lions L. Elmer Sheets and F.W Ritter hatched the idea for a fair, and another club member, Lloyd P. Hamilton,

who was a reporter for the Progress Bulletin, publicized it. Sheets, who was the second club president at the time, made the motion to the club to begin the fair, and Emory R. Yundt seconded it. Club members promoted the idea by selling windshield stickers and by wearing straw sombreros with streaming red ribbons to business and social events. When Sheets presented the idea of a fair to the Pomona City Council, it adopted it. Lion Sheets became president of the Los Angeles County Fair Board, and Lion Merrill Fellows was elected to the board.

Other early projects were helping a local boys’ school, sponsoring two Boy Scout troops, building playgrounds, financing the orthopedic treatments for
