It’s not how loud you play…it’s how sweet you make it sound.

Joao Fernandes - Ukulele Inspiration

When the ship Ravenscrag arrived in Honolulu on the afternoon of August 23, 1879, it was carrying 135 men, 115 women, and 178 children, all immigrants from the economically depressed Portuguese island of Madeira some 7,000 miles and 123 days away. In celebration of their arrival, Joao Fernandes borrowed his friend's braguinha, jumped off the ship, and started playing folks songs from his native land on the wharf. The Hawaiians who came down to the dock were very impressed at the speed of this musicians' fingers as they danced across the fingerboard and they called the instrument "ukulele", which translates into English as "jumping flea".

Augusto Dias, also a passenger aboard the Ravenscrag set-up the first ukulele shop in Honolulu, Hawaii in 1884.. He added natural string to replace the metal wound strings of the braguinha – the ukulele as we know it today was born. The first printed reference to the word ukulele comes from the Hawaiian Gazette of 1895, and the abbreviation "uke" dates to 1891, from a travel book about Hawaii. By the 1930s the ukulele was more common in

the American home than the piano – the Harmony music company sold 500,000 in 1931 alone. How to say Ukulele…

The mainland pronunciation is: you-kah-lay-leeThe original Hawaiian is: oo-koo-LEH-leh

With a knick-knack paddy-whack,
