TEACHING NOTES - GRADE 6

DAILY PROGRAM

It is important to establish routines but at the same time present varied and interesting lessons. At Grade 6 you can expect the students to have developed the ability to:

❖ recognize and use an English vocabulary of several hundred words

❖ write sentences using a conjunction to link clauses.

❖ use the present, future, past and perfect tenses

❖ write short paragraphs

❖ give a short speech (up to 1 minute about themselves).

❖ engage in a simple conversations

❖ write a dictation where phrases are read several times

❖ answer questions about a piece of text

❖ use phonics to pronounce new words

❖ identify parts of speech, noun, verb, adjective, pronoun, preposition, conjunction

and adverbs in a text.

❖ write grammatically correct sentences using the parts of speech listed above.

RANGE OF ACTIVITIES

English teaching should focus on the following activities

❖ Reading

❖ Listening

❖ Speaking

❖ Writing

❖ Comprehension

During the week each of these activities should be incorporated into the lessons. The Let’s Go student book provides a framework from which the activities can be developed.

At Grade 6 each activity should take no more than 30 minutes for the students to complete.

The textbook does not have sufficient content for each unit. Each unit is 8 pages and that material needs to be spread over 25 teaching days (75 hours). Therefore teachers need to develop activities to supplement what is in the book. There should also be a regular review and reinforcement of grammar and vocabulary taught earlier in the year or in previous years.

14

The learning objectives and themes are used to provide ideas for the activities.

TIMING

Each unit should last for 5 – 6 weeks, allowing time for review and final assessment. The lessons should be planned on a weekly basis with each week divided into a number of activities. The objectives for each lesson should be clearly specified, and those objectives should align with the learning objectives for the whole unit.

KEY ACTIVITIES

These are the activities that will be conducted on a regular basis each week. Keeping to a core of essential activities provides structure and a sense of purpose for the students. It also provides a good foundation for formative assessments.

The activities should be linked to the theme of the unit which is being studied. The examples below are from Unit 4 – Around Town the activities are based on the theme of travelling around Phnom Penh.

Although the textbook doesn’t mention Phnom Penh it is important to provide an authentic context for the lessons and so the content is adapted so that it better suits the children at PIO. Doing this will creates a greater sense of purpose on the part of the students and helps maintain their interest in the lessons.

Spelling tests Either read to the class, or written with the letters jumbled. A good way to start each lesson. Marking – 1 mark for a correct answer, ½ mark if one mistake, otherwise zero.

DictationLimited to 60 words. It is better to have regular short dictation exercises than infrequent ones which are overly long. Speak slowly and clearly in short phrases. Repeat several times and give the class time to write. Marking – take half a mark off for each mistake. Make sure that a repeated error is not penalized more than once.

Dialogues Based on the examples used throughout the let’s Go Series the dialogues are used primarily to encourage reading and correct pronunciation. Create dialogues that have natural rhythm and fluency.

The dialogues are used to develop reading and speaking skills. They are also used for comprehension exercises once the reading is completed.

The dialogue is written on the whiteboard part by part. Students practice reading after each part is completed. Once they have mastered the pronunciation and stress we move onto the next part. One side of the room reads the words for one of the speakers and the other for the second speaker. The roles are then swapped. At the end of the exercise the whole class reads all of the text and are applauded if they do well.

15

Grammar exercises Complete a sentence using the correct word. It is usually best to allow students to choose from a range of alternatives. Alternatively use jumbled sentences (no more than 5 ot 6 words) that students use to create a grammatically correct sentence. Another approach is to use senetences which have been split into two parts and the parts have to be matched to create a correct sentence.

WritingEither describing a picture or writing about an activity. Students may need to be provided with a structure or some starter words.

SpeechesPreparing a short presentation which will be spoken to the class. Can be used for sending video messages to other schools.

ComprehensionUsually based on the dialogue or comprehension exercise

Learning games Word or maths games that make learning fun.

The students practiced kicking the ball, throwing the ball and scoring goals. Later in the day everyone played in a game against another team.

Soon it was time to go back to school. The students were tired but very happy. Before they got on the bus the students had their photos taken and were given a certificate by YKK.

Assessment is critical to monitoring student progress and evaluating the effectiveness of your teaching. There are several categories of assessment:

❖ Informal (short review exercises to evaluate recall of basic concepts).

❖ Diagnostic (used to measure the current ability of students and determine areas

for improvement, is often used prior to teaching a new topic to prior knowledge).

❖ Formative (ongoing during a unit, designed to provide feedback to teacher and

student).

❖ Summative (end of unit assessment to measure student learning).

Marks should be recorded for diagnostic, formative and summative assessments.

Results from tests should be recorded using the following link:http://teacherjohn.org/volunteer/registrationvolunteers/tests/record_test_results.php

Details of each test can be entered and the marks recorded. The results for a whole class can be easily displayed and exported to Word or Excel.

UNIT 1 SCHOOL DAYS

LESSON 1

Lessons 1 to 4 will extend over the week. If successful will extend further as it provides a useful platform for further work.

Objectives Revision of previous key concepts, including prepositions, conjunctions and tense Develop writing exercise to the publishing stage.

Part 1

On Friday the class wrote about having a meal (dinner / supper) at home.Correct draft text and have them rewrite the corrected version on paper. These can be written on a computer and printed out.

Possibly have students read their work aloud in class.

Part 2Look for common errors in draft writing and use them for revision.

Exercise

Sentence completion with emphasis on past tense, prepositions and phrasal verbs.

My name is Thiary. On Saturday my two sisters went to the market to buy some fish, fruit and vegetables. My brother took us on his moto and helped us carry all the bags. When we got home put the bags on the table and took out the things that we had bought at the market.

My aunt cooked a meal for us. We had grilled fish, rice and vegetables. After dinner we ate some fruit. When everyone was finished I cleaned the plates and my sister and I washed them.

After that we all watched TV. At 10:00 pm I was tired so I brushed my teeth and went bed. I slept very well and woke up at 7:00 am on Sunday morning.

Questions:

1. How many people went to the market?2. How did they travel to the market?3. What did they buy at the market?4. Where did they put the food when they got home?5. Who cooked the meal for the family?6. What did they eat with the fish and vegetables?

34

7. How many hours did Thiary sleep for?

LESSON 2

ObjectiveFurther practise of writingEmphasis on correct tense, articles and plurals

Part 1Find picture of people preparing Cambodian food.

Class write sentences about the pictures. Emphasise long sentences and a narrative that is in logical or chronological sequence.

After class has completed exercise model using a story

TEACHER JOHN'S BREAKFAST

In the morning teacher John walks down the street. He walks for 30 meters until he finds a lady selling waffles. The waffles are hot and smell delicious. "Good morning," he says, "how much are the waffles?". "They are 500 riels each.", she says. "That is good," says Teacher John, "Can I have two of them please?". The lady puts two waffles into a bag. Teacher John gives her 1,000 riels.

Teacher John then goes to buy some coffee. The cafe is across the road from the waffle stall. At the cafe he buys an iced coffee with no milk or sugar. It costs 1,500 riels. Teacher John takes his waffles and coffee back to hs house.

He puts the coffee on the table. next to his plate then he picks two bananas. Teacher John peels the bananas and then cuts then up with a knife. He puts the pieces on his waffle. He eats the waffles and drinks his coffee. It is a delicious breakfast. After breakfast he gets ready to come to PIO.

There are several possibilities here.

Dictation - use only part of the narrative with Grade 6Comprehension - questions to test understanding of the text.Identify parts of speech, nouns, verbs, articles, prepositions.

Could also be turned into a dialogue and reading exercise. When writing it have the students participate by choosing the appropriate word for each sentence or phrase.

Used as a model for students and to highlight grammar. Discuss use of verbs, plurals, prepositions and articles

35

Comprehension questions:

1. When does Teacher John have breakfast?2. What does Teacher John have for breakfast?3. How far does he have to walk?4. How much do the waffles cost?5. How much does the coffee cost?6. How many bananas does he eat for breakfast?7. What does he do with the bananas?8. What does Teacher John do after breakfast?

36

LESSON 3

Objective

Prepare a set of instructions for a simple task associated with buying or cooking food. Could also revise Maths word problems using prices for purchased items.

Complete and review work from the previous lesson.

Use the last paragraph about Teacher John’s breakfast to

a) Identify parts of speech: articles, nouns, verbs and prepositions.b) Find and correct mistakes in sentences about a student buying food.c) Put the missing prepositions unto a sentences about purchasing and cooking simple food.

The correction of errors proved difficult, especially where there were multiple errors.

Begin Friday’s lesson with a selection of single error sentences, increase the degree of difficulty but not the number of errors.

Alternatively do another exercise identifying nouns, verbs, pronouns and adjectives in a text:

Tomorrow is Saturday, it is the start of the weekend. There are many things that I will do. First I will clean the house with my mother and then I will go to the market with her. We will buy some fruit and vegetables. When I get home I will play football with my friends. We are a very good team. At night I either watch TV with my family play a game.

On Sunday morning I will study for my Mathematics test and I will read a book. I like the book, I borrowed it from the PIO library last week. At night I will eat dinner, have a shower and go to bed.

Lead into writing exercise where students describe a simple process of buying, food or preparing or cooking a simple meal.

Precede with an exercise where sentences describing the actions for a simple task need to be put in order.

Part 2Writing instructions for simple activities associated with food, drink, cooking and eating.

37

Possible exercises include

Buying food for a mealBuying food at the shopCooking a simple meal - noodles, vegetables and fish or meat.

Do writing in draft form - correct and then publish

Part 3Word builder game use letters from words associated with food.

For example, how many words can be made from b,r,e,a,k,f,s,t - allow each letter to be used more than once. Score one point for each letter in a word spelt correctly..

38

LESSON 4

ObjectivesAnalyse simple narratives for parts of speechComplete sentences

Spelling test

Part 1

Narrative:Highlighted words are omitted and used as a sentence completion exercise. Provide the missing words in a randomly sorted list for the students to refer to while working on completing the sentences.

Note Only use one paragraph at a time

Tomorrow is Saturday, it is the start of the weekend. There are many things that I want to do. First I will clean the house with my mother and then I will go to the market with her.We will buy some fruit and negetables.

When I get back home I will play football with my friends. We have a very good team. At night I will either watch TV or play a game. On Sunday morning I will study for my mathematics test. After that I will read a book that I borrowed from the PIO library. At night I will eat dinner, have a shower and go to bed.

Mark work on the3 sentence completion and then ask the class to identify the nouns, verbs and prepositions. Suggest that the work through the text from start to finish and record the nouns, verbs and prepositions as they proceed. Put the results in a table.

39

LESSON 5

Note: The lessons are shorter this week because the Khmer teacher will be working with the class for the last hour of each day.

The sequence of lessons will include some revision of key concepts to allow the “new” students to catch up and to reinforce work covered with Grade 5 over the previous 8 weeks.

Next week there will be a resumption of work with the class involving writing and also aligning lessons with Let’s Go 6 and related grammar exercises using either Essential Grammar or the pre-intermediate book.
